Chapter 4

Author: Serein M
"Yes," I nodded.

A relieved breath escaped him, though a flicker of guilt still crossed his face. He reached for my hand.

"Vesper, you're always so understanding. I knew I could count on you."

The second his fingers brushed my wrist, I pulled my hand back.

Julian froze. "You...?"

His phone buzzed with a string of new messages from Elodie.

"Julian, hurry! It really hurts!"

"I'm so scared by myself."

"You promised you'd protect me."

Julian glanced at his phone and started to panic.

"I have to go," he said, rushing to the bedroom. "Elodie can't handle this alone."

Five minutes later, he came out with a suitcase.

"Vesper, I'll go to the new pack and get everything settled. You just come straight over when you're done packing."

"Okay."

Julian got to the door, then turned back. "Vesper, I love you. We'll be together again soon."

I looked at him and said nothing.

The door closed, and the apartment fell into a dead silence.

I continued packing, my movements robotic and calm.

The next morning, a notification popped up on my phone. Elodie's new social media post.

It was a photo.

Julian, wearing an apron, busy in a kitchen.

The table was set with a beautifully roasted leg of venison and all sorts of side dishes.

The caption: "It feels so good to be taken care of. I'm so lucky to have a mate who can cook like this."

I stared at the picture, and my heart felt like it had been slammed against a wall.

My mind went back to a winter three years ago.

I was working on a gene-modification experiment and accidentally exposed myself to a trace amount of silver dust.

Wolves are naturally sensitive to silver. Even a tiny bit is poison.

I had a fever for two days and couldn't eat anything.

"Julian, can you make me some herbal broth?" I asked, weak in my bed. "The recipe my grandmother taught you."

"Vesper, I'm busy right now," Julian answered without looking up. "Just eat something else."

"But I can't keep anything down," my voice was faint. "Just one bowl, please?"

"Later. I'm dealing with something important."

Then he stepped outside, pacing the garden for forty minutes while he took a call.

Through the window, I saw him talking to Elodie, his expression soft, smiling occasionally.

"Elodie, you're having trouble at work? Don't worry, I'll help you figure it out."

"The pack politics over there are complicated, let me break it down for you..."

Forty minutes later, he came back inside and tossed a few boxes of instant soup from the convenience store onto the bed.

"Have this for now. I really don't have time."

I stared at the cheap, processed food, my heart turning to ash.

And now, for Elodie, he was personally cooking a gourmet roasted venison.

So he knew how to cook.

He just didn't want to cook for me.

For the next month, I handled the end of our ten-year life together like a business transaction.

Dividing the property, transferring the shares, separating the bank accounts.

I signed every document without hesitation.

I packed up all of Julian's personal belongings and shipped them to him.

Including the photos I once treasured.

On day 28, Julian called.

"Vesper! When are you getting here?" he asked, his voice excited. "Elodie is so excited to meet you. She said she hopes you can teach her how to make Venison Antler Rice. It's her favorite."

Venison Antler Rice.

A traditional Silver Crest dish. It's complicated, and takes six hours to stew.

"I don't know how," I said flatly.

"What? How could you not know? Didn't your grandmother teach you?"

"I forgot."

Julian's tone turned sour. "Vesper, don't be like that. Elodie isn't well. What's the big deal with you helping her out a little?"

Help her out. The way I'd been helping him for ten years?

"Julian, my flight is tomorrow," I said, ignoring his question, and hung up.

Day 29. Neutral Zone Core City International Airport.

Thirty minutes before boarding, I got a voice message from Julian.

"Vesper, sorry, Elodie's wolf is suddenly unstable today, she can't come to pick you up. Just grab a cab to the house when you land. I sent you the address."

I listened to the message and replied with two words: "Doesn't matter."

Ten minutes later, he called me.

"Vesper, what's with the attitude?" he snapped. "Elodie is genuinely not feeling well. Don't be angry just because she can't pick you up."

"I'm not angry."

"Then what's with your tone? Do you have a problem with Elodie?"

I sat in the boarding area, watching the planes outside the window.

"Julian, I've been understanding for ten years. This is nothing new."

Silence on the other end.

He sighed, his voice softening. "Look, I'll make it up to you when you get here. I promise."

After hanging up, I leaned back in the chair and let out a long breath.

Ten years. In a few days, I would be home. And after the severing ceremony, it would all finally be over.

Finally, the boarding announcement came.

I grabbed my backpack and walked toward the gate.

In the third month, Julian called again. He sounded exhausted."Vesper, I wanted to come see you, but Elodie's wolf... it's gotten worse." His voice was laced with resignation. "She's been hospitalized. Her wolf is unstable, turning on itself. The healers say any shock could push her over the edge."I was in the lab, mixing a serum sample. The vial glowed silver under the light."Mm," I replied flatly. He seemed to be waiting for more, but I said nothing."Vesper... are you okay?" he asked cautiously."Fine.""I mean... do you miss me?"I stared at the liquid in the vial, feeling nothing."No."Dead silence on the line. After a long moment, he finally spoke, his voice hoarse. "I see."In the fourth month, a courier delivered a package. The 'Mate-Bond Severance Agreement,' signed by Julian. There was also a long letter."Vesper, I admit I have feelings for Elodie, and I admit I hurt you. I'll never forget everything you did for me over the years. I'm leaving you most of my assets as com

Julian's face fell instantly. His lips pressed into a thin line, his eyes darting away. He couldn't say a word."What's wrong? Can't answer?" I pressed. "Weren't you just swearing I was the only one in your heart?""I... I..." he stammered. "Vesper, you know... I've set everything up in Crimson Peak, and Elodie... she...""She can't live without you, right?" I sneered. "Julian, do you remember five years ago? When Elodie was trying to get that exchange spot at St. Rose Medical Academy? Did she give up that chance for you?"His face went even whiter."She knew it was my dream, but she didn't hesitate for a second," my voice was sharp as a blade. "And you? You lied to me, made me give up my chance to go abroad, all to make her dream come true.""That's... that's different..." he trembled."How is it different?" I stared him down. "Now I'm asking you to stay in Silver Crest. Why can't you do it?"He just gaped at me, speechless."She won't sacrifice her comfortable life for you. You won't

The moment I stepped out of the Silver Crest airport, I saw them. A welcoming party. The Silver Crest Head Healing Center sigil shone in the sun.Three senior healers in white coats, genuine smiles on their faces."Dr. Vesper, welcome home," the lead healer said, shaking my hand. "We've all been waiting for you."My eyes stung.Ten years. Finally, someone was welcoming me home for me. Not as someone's mate, but for my own achievements. The convoy took me straight to the healing center. As I walked into the building, I saw the plaque on the door: Vesper Sterling Laboratory. My own lab. After ten years adrift, I was finally home. Truly home. The next day, I threw myself into developing a Silver-Poison Antidote. It was the biggest threat Silver Crest faced. Rival packs often used silver weapons on our patrols, and a normal wolf's recovery from silver poisoning was slow.If I could create an effective serum, it would be a game-changer for our pack's defense.I led a team of twelve, working

Julian was speechless. All I could hear was his ragged breathing and Elodie sobbing in the background."Did you ever ask me what I wanted?" My voice was laced with ice. "Julian, did you ever ask if I wanted to give up my position as Head Healer at Silver Crest to be your cook?""I... I..." He stammered, unable to form a word."Did you ask if I wanted to leave my homeland and start over in a strange territory?" My tone grew colder. "Or am I just some possession to you? Something without a mind of its own?""Vesper, let me explain...""Don't bother explaining," I cut him off. "My mind is made up. I'm staying in Silver Crest. For good.""What?!""Check your email." I started toward the airport cafe. "I sent two files. The Bond-Severance Agreement. And the Asset Division. Sign them."I heard a heavy thud on his end."You... you want to sever our bond?" Julian's voice shook. "Vesper, we're fated mates! The Moon Goddess chose us! You can't just—""I can," I said coldly. "Our healers can seve

Fifteen hours. The flight was finally over.As the plane descended, I saw it. The familiar skyline. The iconic peaks of Silver Crest, glittering in the sun.The old wolf next to me noticed my expression. He smiled gently. "Home, little one.""Yeah," I nodded. "Home."My wolf stirred. A deep thrum vibrated through me. It knew. It was answering the call of home. The second we landed, I turned on my phone.Messages flooded in.Twenty-three from Julian, sent between 10 p.m. last night and 8 a.m. this morning. The first: "Vesper, your flight should be landing soon. Let me know you're safe."The third: "Why haven't you texted back? Are you off the plane yet?"The seventh: "Vesper? Are you ignoring me on purpose?"The twelfth: "I had Elodie make your favorite food. Get here soon. Don't let her effort go to waste."The eighteenth: "This is so selfish. You've got Elodie worried sick. Her headaches are back!"The last one: "Vesper, if you don't reply, I'm calling the Enforcers!"I scanned his me
