Chapter 2

Author: Arya Sue
He patted me on the shoulder. "Go ahead and eat. It'll taste better while it's still fresh."

After saying that, he went back into the kitchen.

I looked at the steaming dish and pressed my lips together.

Lucas and I hadn't spoken for a month. At this point, no matter what either of us said, things would never be the same again.

Sometimes I wondered when we had become like this.

It probably started with our last fight.

I couldn't remember exactly what we had argued about anymore.

I only remembered sending him long messages and calling him repeatedly.

I said some hurtful things, but Lucas stayed silent the whole time.

I couldn't even remember why we ended up hanging up on each other.

But two hours later, he sent me a message. "Clara, Hilary didn't do it on purpose. Don't be so petty. I'm going to help her print her lab data first. I'll bring you some cake when I get back."

He did bring the cake to my dorm.

But I didn't reply to his message, and I didn't go downstairs.

My roommate told me that he waited downstairs for about ten minutes before getting a phone call and leaving.

And the only person who would have called him at that time was Hilary.

I lay on my dorm bed and cried until I couldn't make a sound. I didn't know when I finally fell asleep.

When I woke up the next morning and checked my phone, I had three new messages.

Two were from my professor. The other was from Hazel.

There was nothing from Lucas.

For some reason, I clicked on Hilary's story.

She had posted a picture from the lab the night before.

In one corner of the photo, I could see an arm helping her record the data.

There was a bracelet around that wrist. It was the same bracelet I had personally put on Lucas.

I stared at the picture for a long time. Then I got so angry that I blocked Lucas.

But I soon became afraid that he might try to contact me and be unable to reach me.

So, I kept checking his name and taking him off my blocked list.

In the end, I realized he hadn't tried to contact me again.

It felt like that was when we started drifting out of each other's lives.

Until, without either of us noticing, we had completely disappeared from each other's world.

I had thought about reaching out to Lucas and talking things through.

One day, I deliberately bought some of his favorite snacks and went to his dorm with an umbrella.

It was pouring that day, but I recognized Lucas's back at once.

He wasn't carrying an umbrella. Instead, he quickly took off his jacket and held it over Hilary's head.

When they reached the dorm entrance, they looked at how soaked and messy they both were and laughed at the same time.

I had been about to text him and ask if he could come downstairs to talk.

But when I saw the smile on his face, I couldn't send it.

That was when I finally realized that I had been the only one truly trying in this relationship from the very beginning.

I had been nothing but a fool.

I deleted the message I had already typed.

Then I removed Lucas from the top of my WhatsApp chats, turned around, and walked away with my umbrella.

After that, I forced myself to focus on my studies.

I started asking my professors for more assignments and lab work.

I also began studying hard for the language test because I wanted to escape this place that had caused me so much pain.

I kept living like that until now.

Then, out of nowhere, my phone received a message from Lucas. "What was the name of that barbecue place you said was really good?"

Hazel noticed my expression and asked, "Is it him?"

I nodded. "Yes."

Hazel frowned, looking completely confused.

Lucas came back a few more times. Each time, he brought something different.Once, he brought a limited-edition lipstick I had casually mentioned wanting.Another time, he brought tickets to a musical I had once said I wanted to see.And once, he made a copy of the love letter he had written to me years ago and pinned it to the bulletin board downstairs. When Jenny came running back to tell me about it, she couldn't stop laughing. "Clara, is your ex-boyfriend crazy?"I laughed a little, too. Then I went downstairs, took the letter off the bulletin board, and threw it into the trash.By the fourth week, Lucas stopped coming.I heard that he had gone back home.Hilary had even gone to the airport to pick him up.But the moment Lucas got off the plane and saw Hilary, he turned around and walked away.Hazel was the one who told me all of this.Every few days, she would send me voice messages about all the latest gossip back home.At the end of every message, she would always remind me, "Cl

The zipper of his jacket was undone, and the wind kept blowing it open.He looked up toward the building where I lived. He didn't know which floor I was on, so he simply stood there.I let the curtain fall and said, "Lucas, go home."He tried to say something. "Clara..."I cut off. "We broke up."He quickly denied it, "When did we break up? I never agreed to it."I laughed softly. "I don't need your agreement."He fell silent.I walked back to my desk, sat down, and held the phone between my shoulder and ear while continuing to type. "Lucas, I sent you a message.""What message?""I said we should break up.""I never got it!""Whether you got it or not doesn't matter."I paused for a moment before continuing. "What matters is that I don't want to be with you anymore."He stayed silent for so long that I thought the call had disconnected. Then I heard him say in a low voice, "Clara, I know I was wrong. I bought the chestnut cake from your favorite bakery. Could you come down for a minut

My roommate, Jenny Caldwell, knocked on my door before poking her head inside. "Clara, you have a package downstairs."I answered and stood up.My lower back felt sore after sitting at my desk all day.I went downstairs to pick up the package and opened it. Inside were several hand warmers and a few bottles of barbecue sauce from my mom.I smiled and carried everything upstairs. When I passed through the living room, Jenny was happily video chatting with her boyfriend.I didn't pay much attention and went back to my room.I put the hand warmers in my drawer.I already had several boxes stored in there. The last time Jenny saw me doubled over at my desk because of my period cramps, she had almost called an ambulance.I quickly stopped her and told her I was fine. It was an old problem I'd had for years. My mom found out about it later. Since then, she had been sending me hand warmers every month.I leaned back in my chair and looked out the window. It was already dark. The streetlights

Inside the paper bag was a clear plastic container holding a slice of mango cake. The moment Lucas saw the mango, his hand shook, and he almost dropped his phone.Clara was allergic to mango.Once, she had accidentally taken a bite of mango pudding. That night, her throat swelled up, and she could barely breathe.Lucas had carried her on his back all the way to the hospital. The emergency room doctor told him that she could have been in serious danger if he had arrived ten minutes later. After that, Lucas always checked the ingredients whenever he bought snacks. He stared at the screen in disbelief. "How could I have bought mango cake that day?"Whenever he bought anything for Clara, he always avoided mango. He wouldn't even buy her mango-scented shampoo.Yet the cake in the picture was mango. And when he took the picture, he hadn't even noticed.Just then, Hilary called him.He answered."Lucas, you're really not coming to see me? I have a cold, and I'm all alone at the hospital. I fe

Lucas had been standing outside the restaurant for a long time.He kept calling, but no one answered.Clara Scott's phone was already turned off.He looked down at his screen and realized he had already called her 23 times. He kicked a small rock by the side of the road in frustration. The rock rolled away and hit a nearby trash can.It was already nighttime. The streetlights were on, and the lights inside the restaurant were glowing. When Lucas saw the owner come outside carrying a bag of trash, he quickly walked over. "Hey, did you see my girlfriend? We've eaten here before. I even confessed my feelings to her here. Do you remember?"The moment the owner recognized him, his expression changed.Lucas had seen that kind of look before. It was the kind of look that said someone wanted to say something but didn't know how. There was also a hint of pity in his eyes.Lucas suddenly felt uneasy. The owner threw the trash bag into the dumpster and dusted off his hands. "Young man, if you've

Today was the first day of my period. A sharp cramp hit my lower stomach, and I slowly bent over."Clara, are you okay?" Lucas hurried over.At the same time, Hilary let out a soft cry. "Ow..."She held her wrist. There was a small red mark where it had hit the corner of the table.Lucas immediately stood up to check her wrist. Then he glanced at me and casually said, "Please take care of yourself for now. I'm going to take Hilary to get some medicine for her scrape. I'll take you home when I get back."With that, he left the restaurant with Hilary. My stomach was hurting badly, and I had no appetite left. I went to pay the bill.Hazel came over and helped me stand. "Clara, let's go. Your clothes are wet. You need to change."I shook my head. "I'm not going back."Hazel stared at me in shock. "You're really going to wait for him?"I gave her a helpless smile and showed her my flight information. "We don't have enough time."After leaving the restaurant, I called a cab. While I waited,
