Chapter 4

Author: Yulansa
The men traded a look and moved in on my grandmother.

My stomach dropped. I put myself in front of her.

My grandmother had a heart condition. Stress and rough handling were the last things she needed.

But on my own I was no match for men that size.

All I could do was watch as they shoved me aside and roughly grabbed my grandmother by the arms.

"Stop!" I shouted at Sofia. "My grandmother has a heart condition. Do you want a body on your hands? Let go of her!"

Anthony hesitated and tugged at Sofia's sleeve, clearly afraid things were getting out of hand. The men paused.

Sofia rolled her eyes.

"Who cares! If these two broke nobodies die, they die. Luca will take the heat for it!

"Keep pouring! Nobody leaves until that container is empty!"

Ada saw how pale my grandmother had gone and how fast she was breathing. She found the courage to speak.

"Ms. Marino, she looks seriously ill. Her lips are turning purple. It doesn't look like she's faking!

"Please, have mercy and let them go. I'm begging—"

She never finished. Sofia's eyes hardened, and she kicked Ada hard in the chest, knocking her to the floor.

"You backstabbing little bitch, who asked you? You're fired. Get out!"

She looked at me with a twisted smile, daring me.

"I'll let her go if you get on your knees and kiss the toe of my shoe. Make me happy, and I'll spare your grandmother's life."

My grandmother's life mattered more than my pride. I gritted my teeth and started to sink to my knees.

But my grandmother forced out a few words, her voice shaking. "No... don't kneel... We're the Corsino family. We don't bow to scum like her..."

Her defiance sent Sofia over the edge.

Her face twisted and she screamed, "You old hag! Still talking back? Pour it down her throat!"

A moment later, they were forcing the foul-smelling industrial ammonia into my grandmother's mouth. It hurt so much to watch that I could barely breathe.

She coughed violently and couldn't speak at all.

Her lips were red and swollen from chemical burns. Her breathing grew weaker, and her eyes began to lose focus.

Frantic, I struggled with all my strength. My eyes were bloodshot as I screamed, "My grandmother is dying! Call an ambulance! If she dies here, not one of you walks away!"

Anthony panicked and grabbed his sister's arm.

"Sofia, having the cops shut this store down over two broke nobodies isn't worth it. Let it go."

After a few seconds, Sofia gave a contemptuous snort and grudgingly backed down. "Fine. For your sake, let them go."

The men let go, visibly relieved.

My grandmother collapsed in a heap, her face blue. The caustic liquid had made her throat swell shut. She couldn't breathe!

Shaking, I knelt on the floor and searched through the canvas bag. I found the small pill bottle in a corner.

I was about to give my grandmother her emergency medication when Sofia snatched the bottle away and tossed it into the trash can in the corner.

"Nice performance. Are you professional grifters? How much have you squeezed out of people with that act?

"It won't work on me! Take that old hag and get out before I change my mind!"

I snapped. The rage I'd been holding back came roaring up, and I hit her across the face with all my strength.

She screamed.

"You bitch, how dare you hit me! I should never have gone soft!

"Are you all blind? Hold her down!"

I fought like a cornered animal, but I was outnumbered. They had me pinned to the cold floor in seconds.

Just when I had lost all hope, a cool, familiar voice came from the doorway. "Victoria? Is that you? What... what are you doing here?"

The next morning I went back to Carlucci Jewelers.I personally brought back every old hand and manager Sofia and Anthony had pushed out, one at a time.Daniel Ricci, the manager I had just promoted, handed me a list."Donna, everyone who came forward yesterday is on this page. I've also listed the ones who pretended not to know anything."I looked it over."The family's rules apply to all of them. Give those who came forward money to start over, and send them to South America until this blows over."Put the rest in oil drums and sink them in the Atlantic."Everyone in the second group went white. Several collapsed where they stood and wet themselves.I walked over to Ada.She had been the first employee to speak up for my grandmother and me. She was in her early twenties, small and thin, but her gaze was steady."Starting today, you run this store. You'll also be the family's contact for outside business."Ada's eyes went wide."Me? Donna, I can't. I've never killed anyone...""Then y

I gave them the short version. Several large men in black suits came forward, dislocated Luca's jaw, and pinned him to the floor.Sofia was tied up.Anthony was still crouched in the corner. The head of the enforcers questioned him briefly, pulled him up off the floor, and took him along.Mario was still on the floor. The men who arrived next dragged him out like a dead dog. When they dragged Luca past me, he rasped, "Victoria, I was wrong.""Wrong about what?"His mouth moved, but no words came out."Wrong to think our grandmother is soft. Wrong to think blood would stop me. Wrong to think that if it all came out, I would stand between you and family justice."Are you actually sorry? Or are you just afraid of how cold the Hudson is tonight?"Luca's lips trembled violently as if he still wanted to beg, but I didn't want to hear another word. I motioned for the enforcers to hurry him away for punishment. My brother and I left the store and hurried to the family's private hospital to see

Mario's expression changed at once.I kept going."Sofia admitted she used a secondary black card linked to the family's account to launder money for the Marino crew. She also admitted that she and your son stole $80 million from us. I've already put out a hit. Every agreement between us is canceled, effective immediately."And starting today, every piece of Marino territory in New York gets special attention from my people."That meant the Marino crew was finished. They had counted on the Corsino family's protection against their rivals. Now they had lost that protection, owed a cartel a fortune, and faced rival crews ready to tear them apart.Mario clutched his chest and pointed a shaking finger at Sofia."You... you..."A second later, he couldn't catch his breath. He toppled backward, stiff as a board. He hit the floor, his face gray. Anthony threw himself down beside him, trying to bring him around.Sofia stood there shaking like a leaf. Then she spun around and glared daggers at

"Luca, why aren't you picking up your phone?"When are you sending the payment for that high-purity Colombian shipment? We agreed on a 20/80 split. Don't tell me your share isn't enough."A man with a scarred face swaggered in, wearing a loud shirt and a heavy gold chain. He saw the scene inside and fell silent, stunned."Dad!" Sofia called out, her face red and swollen and her voice thick with tears.Mario took the cigar out of his mouth and looked around the room.Anthony was still on the floor, and Sofia's face was bruised. Luca stood off to one side, pale as a sheet. My brother and I sat comfortably on the sofa with our drinks.Mario's eyes narrowed. He stepped forward, reaching for the gun at his belt as his voice dropped."The Corsino family has influence all over New York, but that doesn't put you above the rules the rest of us live by!"Donna Corsino, you owe me an explanation for this! Otherwise, you know what's coming."I'll make the Corsino family bleed, even if it costs me

Following Ada's lead, the other employees and enforcers began revealing everything Sofia and Anthony had done.Sofia rushed at them, trying to hit them as she screamed, "You're lying! Every one of you is lying about me!"My brother kicked her to the floor and turned the tablet screen toward her."They're lying? Then the offshore statements and the vault records on here are lies too?"I took my brother's tablet and looked at the accounting discrepancies our professional hackers had flagged. Every entry was appalling."You've got some nerve. You've been here less than a year, and you've already siphoned nearly $80 million out of the family's laundering network."With a cold laugh, I turned to my dear cousin, Luca."Is this a misunderstanding as well?""I didn't know! Victoria, I swear I knew nothing! She was gentle and kind with me, the sort of woman who wouldn't hurt a fly. She had me completely fooled!"He rushed up to Sofia and slapped her again with all his strength.More blood immed

Luca ignored Sofia until the family's emergency team arrived and treated my grandmother. When her color finally returned, he slumped to the floor, exhausted. At last, I could stop fearing for her life. Now it was time to settle the score with those two bastards, Sofia and Anthony."Luca, your fiancée certainly likes to throw her weight around. I hear that in here, what she says is Sicilian law."He went white and pushed himself up, scrambling to explain. "It isn't like that! This is all a misunderstanding!"I gave him a cold, mocking smile."A misunderstanding? Which part? Accusing me of sleeping with her father, or forcing ammonia down our grandmother's throat?"Luca's lips trembled, but he couldn't get a word out.Sofia and Anthony sank to the floor. Trembling, they reached for my pant legs, but I stepped back before they could touch me."Donna, I was wrong! I was so wrong! If I had known who you were, I never would have tried to take your necklace!"Beside her, Anthony broke down an
