Chapter 2

Author: River Snapshot
The video cut off abruptly.

I looked at my reflection in the mirror.

The dress did not fit. It gaped at the bust but dug into my waist, leaving angry red marks across my skin.

Becky had chosen the design. It had been ordered in her size.

I took off the wedding dress.

The zipper caught halfway down my back. I struggled with it for several minutes before finally wrenching it free.

The absurdity of it all suddenly struck me.

I was the bride, yet I had been shut out of my own wedding from beginning to end.

My phone screen lit up.

A new message appeared in the family group chat.

“Congratulations, Bec…”

Before I could read the rest, the message was deleted.

A second later, Becky and Daniel both tagged me in the chat.

Becky: I’m sorry, Gem. I’m having stomach pains, so Daniel and the others are taking me to the hospital.

Daniel: You’ve had a long day too, Gem. What would you like to eat? I can pick something up for you on the way back.

Before I could respond, Becky answered for me.

[Gem loves the chicken pot pie from that diner near school.]

Daniel replied immediately: Got it.

However, I could barely even remember the place.

It was Becky who loved it. She had dragged me there with her several times.

At some point, everything she liked had somehow become something I supposedly liked.

Of all the things she claimed to remember about me, not one of them was ever truly mine.

The family kept chatting in the group. Messages poured in faster than I could read them.

I had known for a long time that they had another group chat without me.

Whenever someone accidentally posted something in this one, everyone would immediately bury it beneath a flood of new messages.

I began typing a question about the congratulations, then deleted it halfway through.

The tears I had only just managed to stop began falling again.

Whenever they talked, I could never get a word in.

On the rare occasions when I sent a message or two, everyone silently skipped over them.

I had tried confronting them about it before.

Becky had simply said, “Gem, you’re so quiet. You only send one or two messages at a time, so we honestly don’t notice them.”

After that, I made an effort to say more. When no one responded, I repeated myself a few times.

At that point, Daniel had frowned and cut me off.

[Gemma, you only need to say something once. We all can read.]

Of course they could read.

They simply chose which words to ignore and when to treat me as though I had no voice.

A message from one of my coworkers had been left unanswered on my phone.

[Gem, the network still needs a sign-language interpreter for the reporting team being sent to Selvaria. Are you interested?]

Ever since I heard about the overseas assignment, I had been waiting for a chance to discuss it with Daniel.

There was no longer such a need for it.

After accepting the offer, I went straight to my room and began packing.

I had moved everything important to the new house and left behind nothing but a pile of old clothes.

All of them were hand-me-downs from Becky.

After I finished packing, I threw every last one of them away.

Daniel and Becky did not return until late that night.

My mother and Becky’s father came back with them.

Even Daniel’s parents were there.

Thinking I was not home, the entire family settled into the living room to talk.

I was about to step out of my room when I heard Becky sobbing.

“Daniel, what are we going to do? You and Gem only just had your wedding, but I’m already pregnant with your child.”

The words hit me like a physical blow.

Then, Daniel stroked Becky’s back and pulled her tightly against his chest.

“We’ll go to the courthouse and make ours legal first. We can explain everything to Gem afterward. As long as we talk to her properly, she’ll understand.”

Mom stared anxiously at Becky’s stomach. “Don’t cry, Bec. You need to think about the baby.”

Daniel’s mother, Stephanie Pearson, chimed in. “You two have gone through the ceremony together. All that’s left is the marriage license. You might as well make it official.”

My stepfather, Richard Imrie, and Daniel’s father, Robert Pearson, shook hands with broad smiles. “Now we really are going to be family.”

“You can skip the handshake. We’re family now.”

A wave of icy dread washed over me.

I blinked against the burning in my eyes.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

The message they had deleted from the family chat had been to congratulate my best friend on carrying my husband’s child.

I knew I could never compete with Becky when it came to winning our parents over.

I just never imagined that not only did everyone know they were together, they had even kept it from me.

Like a fool, I had let them make every decision for me while I played my part in their charade.

“Daniel, go home. You don’t belong here.”I turned away and wiped the last tear from my cheek.“When you get back, pass along my message to the others. Tell them to stop looking for me.”Daniel left.A few days later, Mom called. She was sobbing hysterically on the other end.“Gem, are you really cutting your own mother out of your life? Fine, turn your back on this family! But if you die over there, don’t expect any of us to bring your body home!”She wept and hurled insults at me, using me as an outlet for her anger just as she always had.I thought her words would hurt. I thought they would break my heart. However, I felt nothing at all.“You don’t need to worry about bringing me home. My colleagues will take care of it.”“What kind of thing is that to say? Will you only be satisfied once you have driven me into an early grave?”I stood on the balcony and watched thick columns of smoke rise from the distant fighting. Then, I finally asked the question I had buried for y

I handed out the last piece of bread, then turned to face him.“Daniel, go home. Nothing you say will make me leave with you.”“Gem, just hear me out…”He stepped forward and reached for me, but I moved back before he could touch me.His hand froze in midair before curling into a fist.“Gem, I love you. I just could never let Becky go. But we’re divorced now, and I promise nothing will ever happen between me and her again. Please come home. Everyone is worried about you.“Becky cries every day and blames herself for what happened to you. Your mom checks the news from Selvaria first thing every morning and only relaxes when she knows you are safe...” I covered my ears and cut him off. “Daniel, we’re over. None of that has anything to do with me anymore. Leave me alone.”“Gem!” Daniel grabbed my wrist. His eyes were bloodshot. “I’m sorry. I was wrong. Please give me one more chance. We can go home and have the wedding all over again. This time, I swear no one will take your plac

Suddenly, he remembered an afternoon during their sophomore year of high school.Becky had led Gemma over by the hand and read the entire love letter aloud for her.Gemma kept her head down. (3rd POV)Daniel called Gemma seventeen times, but every call went straight to voicemail because her phone was turned off.Whenever she became upset in the past, she would always answer by the third call. She had never shut off her phone like that before.Becky paced anxiously around the hospital room. “Daniel, did she answer?”He tightened his grip on the phone and shook his head.Just then, Jude regained consciousness. When she learned that Gemma had left, she nearly passed out from anger again.Becky immediately rubbed her back soothingly. “Mom, please don’t get upset. Gem is only angry. She’ll come back soon.”Jude swatted her hand away and shouted, “Fine! Since she walked out, she can stay gone! As far as I’m concerned, she’s no longer my daughter!”Daniel texted Gemma. [Gem, your mother is awake. Stop acting childish and come back to apologize.]An hour passed without a reply.Becky tried texting her as well. [Gem, where are you? Everyone’s worried about you. Plea

The next morning, I went to the network to hand over my remaining assignments. When I returned home, Becky and Daniel were there.Their newly issued marriage certificate lay on the table.Becky rested her head on Daniel’s shoulder.“Daniel, am I being selfish? If it weren’t for the baby, we would never have gotten married. Gem is supposed to be your wife.”Daniel wrapped an arm around her.“Then, we will just have to treat her even better from now on.”I curled my hands into fists and walked into the room. The moment they saw me, they sprang apart.Becky quickly stood and tried to explain.“Gem, it’s not what you think. I…”I ignored her and went straight to my room to get my luggage.Becky followed me inside. When she saw my suitcase, she grabbed my hand as tears spilled down her cheeks again.“Gem, where are you going? I’ll leave instead. Please don’t do this.”I sidestepped her and dragged my suitcase toward the front door. She chased after me and blocked my path.“G

It felt as though an invisible hand had closed around my throat.I forced my knees not to buckle. My eyes were bloodshot. My teeth bit into my lower lip hard enough to draw blood. Finally, I stepped into the living room.Unable to contain my anguish any longer, I snatched a glass from the table and hurled it to the floor.Shards scattered in every direction.Daniel shot to his feet. There was panic in his voice.“Gem…”Becky turned pale when she saw me and hurried forward to grab my arm.“Gem, I am sorry. The pregnancy was an accident. I never meant to take him away from you.”The pain was so overwhelming that I could barely breathe, let alone speak.I fought desperately to hold back my tears. Then, I raised my hand and violently shook her off.I signed several questions. “Why? Why did you make a fool of me? Why did you all lie to me?”“Enough! Stop waving your hands around!”Mom shoved me aside.“If you can’t speak, just keep quiet. Stop upsetting Bec.”I stumbled an
