Lucy’s POV

I agreed to meet with Alaric at a small cafe around the corner from the hospital, not wanting to be too far away from my parents in case they needed me.

“Of course you’d be late.” I murmured frustratedly as I looked at my watch.

I’d been waiting there with my cold brew for ten minutes now. He was doing this on purpose. A powerplay no doubt. One to show me that my time was nowhere near as valuable as his.

“Lucy,” he greeted me when he finally arrived, his assistant not far behind.

“Mr. Kingsley.” My words were short and sharp. And I wanted him to know with every fiber of my being that I did not want to be here.

He sat down. “Ah, surely, we’ve reached a first name-basis by now, Luce,” he called me by the nickname he’d given me years ago.

“I’d rather stick to business, Mr. Kingsley,” I coldly retorted.

He grimaced. Clearly, I hit a nerve.

“Fine,” he said. “So, I take it you’ve spoken to your mother about me acquiring the Whitmore Group.”

I clenched my jaw so tightly it began

  • No Longer His Ugly Wife   CHAPTER FIFTY THREE

Lucy’s POVIt was liberating having those divorce papers in hand when I returned to the hospital. I was excited to tell mom, the news I could hardly contain myself.“You seem to be in a good mood,” she said when she saw me. “Considering everything that’s going on.”“Yeah,” I sighed. “That’s because I am.” I showed her the papers. “At least one thing is out of our way now,” I said, showing her the divorce papers.“So, he finally signed them?” She smiled.“Yes, it’s finally settled.”“Oh, Lucy!” she declared as she embraced me. “I’m so happy for you!”“Thanks mom.”“This will open up so many more opportunities for you. You can finally go on to do things that will benefit you…and maybe this family.”“I agree.” I said, planting the papers neatly into a folder that was in my bag. “Marrying, Alaric for one.”I froze, and met her gaze, and she was unwavering in hers. “Mom, what-”“Honey, this is the perfect time for you to make things right with him, right? And oh, wouldn’t it be grand if y

  • No Longer His Ugly Wife   CHAPTER FIFTY TWO

Lucy’s POVIt took me a moment to gather my bearings before leaving the coffee shop. No longer in the mood for my cold coffee, I got up and left. There was a lot to absorb concerning my conversation with Alaric but at the forefront of those thoughts was what Alaric had said about Tom.It was clear that he’d had a forceful hand in Tom returning the money to me. With that in mind, I could only assume that with Alaric involving himself, Tom would think twice about threatening me again. I pulled out my phone and found his name on my blocked list, then I unblocked him and with great reluctance, I dialed his number.“Hello?” His voice was calm and far less problematic than I remembered in recent pasts. “Hi, Tom,” I greeted, my voice sharp and guarded.“Hey Lucy, it’s good to hear your voice.” “Cut the crap,” I snapped, not in the mood for his mask of politeness. “No, Lucy, really,” he said. “I…” he hesitated. “I actually think we need to talk.”I agreed, but I wasn’t going to tell him

  • No Longer His Ugly Wife   CHAPTER FIFTY

Lucy’s POVStressed by the lack of bids on the house, I tidied up to distract myself before heading to the bank. My back was against the wall, and depleting my savings to buy time before they discharged Dad was my only option. As soon as the money was in hand, I rushed to the hospital and spoke to the person in charge.“Hello, Lucy,” greeted Dr. Brown. He’d been the one overseeing my father’s healthcare over the last week. "Good evening, Dr. Brown. I know you're busy, so I'll be brief. I'm here to plead with you not to discharge my father." I pulled out a check. "This $54,000 doesn't put a dent in the bill, but it's a down payment. I just need more time to figure out the rest."“Ms. Lucy.”“Please don’t give up on him, Dr. Brown. I just need a chance to-”“Ms. Lucy, please,” he lifted his hand up to stop me from talking. “Your bill has been taken care of,” he said to me.Stunned, I stared at him, confused, “What? What do you mean? I never paid-did…did my mother?”"No," Dr. Brown sai

  • No Longer His Ugly Wife   CHAPTER FORTY NINE

Lucy’s POV"Are you kidding me?" I spat. "Why would I ever give you this?" I cut him off before he could answer. "Why are you even asking about this watch? You've never asked for collateral before."His face shifted and for a second-just a second I could have sworn that I saw something that hinted at a glint of guilt before it was quickly masked by a smug expression. “What are you trying to say, Lucy?” he sneered. I frowned. “You know exactly what I’m trying to…” Tom’s smug grin shifted into something akin to a child-or more accurately, a dumb deer caught in headlights. I was confused for a moment as I watched him look past me and up, almost well over my head.“What are you looking at….” my worlds trailed off as I smelled a sweet and masculinely expensive cologne. A familiarly sweet and masculinely expensive cologne.“Lucy,” his smooth baritone of a voice said my name, and I knew immediately who it was.I quickly turned around and there stood Alaric, towering over me, an intimidat

  • No Longer His Ugly Wife   CHAPTER FORTY EIGHT

Lucy’s POVA lot had happened over the last past week between me and Tom. He’d been pressuring and reminding me of the alleged million dollars every single day.Ironically, this is the only time throughout the entirety that I’d known the man that he’d been this consistent. Sad, that the blinders came off too late.Between his harassment of me and my family, I had decided that the best thing to do at this point was block his number and ban him from the hospital. I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me until now that Tom would use any means to counteract any move I made towards him. That included using Noah as a weapon against me. “Noah!” I rushed to him, grabbing his shoulders to stop him from causing more damage. “Why would you do this?” I asked incredulously, as I saw the damage he’d caused. His little chubby face turned red, and tears began to mist his eyes. “You left us!” he yelled at me. Bewildered,I glanced at Tom who wore a smug grin and shrugged-a silent ‘what are you going t
