Chapter 171

Author: Ginger Sue
After receiving the call, Winter sped to the school in the sports car Elijah had given her.

The moment she stepped into the principal's office, her eyes fell on Alistair. He sat alone in the corner, head bowed, hands rubbed raw from nervous fidgeting.

On the couch opposite sat a mother and her son. The boy wailed uncontrollably, while the woman's face twisted with fury.

"Mr. McKnight, Alistair hit my son! Look at his eyes! Look at the swelling on his head! You must do something!" the boy's mother shouted.

Winter's gaze darkened. That woman was none other than Jasmine, and that boy was her son, Bradley.

"My son is a well-behaved child! We've pampered him since his birth. His father and I have never laid a hand on him. Yet this brat dared to bully him!" Jasmine clutched Bradley protectively, glaring at Alistair. "A child with such rotten character is nothing but a bad influence! Mr. McKnight, punish him!"

Alistair's voice trembled through his tears. "I-I'm not a brat…"

"Josh, are you really bidding on it for me? Is it really for me?"Anticipation sparkled in Jessica's eyes as she asked him again and again, seeking reassurance. All these years by Joshua's side, she had seen every kind of luxury. Every year, he prepared exquisite and exorbitant birthday gifts for her. Any one of them, taken out on its own, would make countless women green with envy. But this hairpin was different.First, it was an antique—priceless. Even if one were to add up every gift Joshua had given her over the past five years, none would come close to its value. Second, this hairpin had once been a token of love exchanged between a king and queen on their wedding day. For Joshua to bid on it for her at such a formal, high-profile event tonight meant only one thing to outsiders—they would think Joshua was using the hairpin to confess his love, declaring to the world that she was the woman he cherished most, the woman he loved above all else."When have I ever gone back on m

With a million dollars, the kidnapper could build a three-story house in his hometown and even take two wives."I know whoever's behind this is dangling a big reward." Winter took a deep breath and met his stare head-on. "How much did he offer? Let me go, and I'll pay you five times that, or ten times. I can even pay more, if you want."Greed flickered violently in his eyes. Just as he started working out what ten times the amount would be, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He glanced at it and quickly left the basement to answer the call."Boss?""You've got her under control? Is she behaving?" Tom's voice was cold."One slap shut her up." The man hesitated before asking, "Boss, who exactly is his husband?"Tom became wary. "Why do you ask?""Just curious. You want me to extort him, so I should know the situation to plan it properly, right?""I've already planned everything. You just follow the script." Tom grinned sinisterly. "But still, no harm telling you, I guess. Her husba

Sean hesitated before reporting, "Mr. Stroud, I tried calling Mrs. Stroud just now, but her phone's unreachable. That's a bit strange…"A flicker of chill flashed through Jessica's eyes as she watched the man beside her out of the corner of her eye."Unreachable? What's strange about that?" Joshua's voice dropped, laced with faint mockery and irritation. "Maybe she's busy playing stepmother to someone else's child. Don't ruin her good time."The moment those words landed, the tension drained from Jessica's face, a barely perceptible smile touching her lips.Sean, however, felt only frustration. They had been married for five years, and Winter's devotion had never been subtle, never half-hearted.Yet all it took was a perfectly ordinary interaction with another man for Joshua to recast her as morally suspect, wiping away every trace of the love and effort she had poured into the marriage. For the first time, Sean felt not just disappointed, but drained. He had always rooted for t

Someone praised, "Ms. Lynch isn't just beautiful; she's brilliant as well! That's really something!"Blake couldn't hide his pride on Joshua's behalf. The more he looked at them, the more perfectly matched they seemed. "Exactly! Josh has truly found a rare gem!"Jessica's eyes sparkled as she gazed at Joshua. "I'm really not that extraordinary. It's mainly that Mr. Stroud gave me the stage to shine. I'm sincerely grateful for the opportunities and care he's given me."At that moment, someone teased, "Judging by the way you two look at each other, I guess good news isn't far off? When are we getting invited to your wedding?"Joshua's eyes darkened suddenly, and the faint smile at his lips vanished.Seeing him remain silent, the group exchanged awkward glances, unsure how to react.Blake merely raised his glass and sipped, making it clear he had no intention of explaining anything. He figured it wasn't necessary because Joshua and Winter were already headed for divorce. Sooner or

Winter's mouth was gagged with a rag, muffling her sounds into helpless whimpers.Blood matted her lashes. Her head throbbed violently, and the world before her was nothing more than a swimming, unstable haze. Even in the grip of despair and danger, her will remained unbroken. Her crystal-clear eyes burned with determination as she struggled against her bonds, constantly scanning her surroundings. The light was dim, but she could make out the shape of the place—it looked like an abandoned factory. Among the shadows, she spotted scattered remnants of machinery tucked in a corner.Like an earthworm, she wriggled forward, inching toward the pile. Though her limbs were tightly bound, she could still move her fingers. Squinting through the poor light, she groped desperately and finally found one of the parts. Her pulse raced. Her childhood had been spent around her mother, tinkering with all kinds of mechanical parts. Instantly, she recognized it as a bearing from an old printing pres

Jessica thought that perhaps Sean was exaggerating when he told Ruth that Joshua was making a public appearance with Winter as a couple. If Joshua had truly intended for Winter to appear as his wife, he would've worn his wedding ring. Florence must have been the one to force his hand, demanding that he bring Winter with him. With that in mind, Jessica felt a quiet sense of relief. While Joshua wasn't looking, she slipped out her phone and sent Ruth a text. "Mom, that bitch, Winter, didn't show up.""Jessie, don't worry. When it comes to handling things, you can always count on me. I'll take down everyone who stands in your way!" Ruth replied."Thank you, Mom. I know you love me the most.""By the way, where are you, Jessie? Your dad was looking for you."A shadowed, pleased smile played across Jessica's mouth when she replied, "I'm in Josh's car. Tonight, I'm still his woman.""Oh, wow! Great job, Jessie! I'll tell your dad later so he can prepare himself. This is a rare chan
