Chapter 4

Author: Existence
"This isn't about the money."

My voice was hoarse as I struggled to keep my emotions in check. "It's about the thought behind it. My dad can barely see, and he pricked his fingers several times while sewing those sachets."

"Blake." Sophia cut me off, a hint of disdain in her eyes. "Your dad runs a little roadside stall. That's hardly respectable work to begin with. Stop bringing these cheap trinkets home. What will people think?"

I stared at the woman who had promised Dad three years ago that she would always cherish me.

When we'd gotten married, Dad had suggested holding the ceremony in his hometown. Sophia had brushed him off, claiming she was too busy with work at the law firm. But I'd noticed the frown on her face and the unmistakable flash of disgust in her eyes.

She thought my hometown was too far away, the countryside too dirty, and Dad's relatives too low-class for her to associate with.

That fleeting frown had lodged in my heart like a thorn, festering there for three long years. Back then, I swallowed my hurt and kept my mouth shut. But not this time.

This time, I was going to pull that thorn out once and for all and take Sophia down with it.

When Sophia realized I wasn't going to respond, she grabbed her car keys and turned to Ethan. "Come on. Let's go grab some late-night snacks."

I sank onto the couch and began piecing together the scraps of fabric scattered across the coffee table, fitting them together one fragment at a time like a puzzle that could never be solved.

Just then, my phone rang.

"Am I speaking with a family member of Mr. Edward Morgan? He's been brought to the hospital and is currently unconscious. He needs emergency surgery. Please come to the hospital immediately."

My mind went blank. A deafening roar drowned out everything around me.

"What happened to my dad? He was fine just this afternoon."

"Our preliminary diagnosis indicates an acute cardiac episode triggered by a fall. According to witnesses, he went to confront a salesperson this afternoon and was pushed down a flight of steps. We've issued a notice that he's in critical condition. Please get here as soon as possible."

So Dad had gone after the scammer to demand his money back, all because he hadn't wanted to burden me with his problems.

My hands trembled so violently that I could barely hold on to my phone.

"I'm coming. I'll be there right away."

The moment I hung up, I grabbed my wallet and bolted out the door.

…

At the hospital's payment counter, a nurse urged me to hurry.

"You need to pay eight thousand dollars upfront! The patient's condition is critical, and he needs emergency surgery immediately."

I pulled out my bank card and tried to pay, but the transaction was declined. I didn't have enough money in my account.

With trembling hands, I called Sophia. She rejected my call twice. It wasn't until my third attempt that she finally answered.

"What do you want now?" Her voice was thick with drunkenness.

Loud music blared in the background, and someone shouted, "Come on, Sophia! You have to do a toast with Ethan!"

Then Ethan's voice rang out above the noise. "Sophia, are you drinking or not?"

Pain twisted through my chest, but I had no time to confront her about any of it. Swallowing my hurt, I pleaded, "Sophia, my dad needs emergency surgery right now! Please, just transfer eight thousand dollars back to me from the 500 thousand dollars. I'm begging you!"

Silence fell on the other end for two seconds.

Then Sophia let out a mocking laugh. "Blake, are you so desperate for my attention that you'd make up a story about your own dad being on the brink of death?"

"Ethan has his trial tomorrow. I brought him out to relax, and you just had to ruin the evening, didn't you? If you really need money, I'll ask accounting to transfer 20 thousand dollars to you tomorrow."

Before I could say another word, she hung up.

I stood there frozen, consumed by despair. I could feel my legs giving way.

Just then, a pair of strong hands caught my arm and steadied me. It was Jack.

"Blake, take a breath. I'll cover your dad's surgery costs for now."

The moment he said those words, all the emotions I'd been desperately holding back that night came crashing down at once.

Once I'd managed to calm down a little, Jack pulled a document from his bag and handed it to me.

"Blake, I looked into Ethan's case file. Do you know who that so-called rich girl is, the one whose ribs he broke at the bar?"

His jaw tightened with anger.

"Her name is Linda Mitchell. She's the same scammer who sold your dad that burial plot and cheated him out of 30 thousand dollars!"

I froze, struggling to process what I'd just heard. Before I could make sense of it all, my phone vibrated again. This time, the call was from the local police station.

"Hello, is this Mr. Blake Morgan, a family member of Edward Morgan?"

"Yes, this is Blake."

"Our investigation indicates that Linda Mitchell was the person who pushed your father down the steps this afternoon."

I felt my blood run cold.

"Ms. Sophia Walker is here at the station, requesting Linda's release on bail."

The day Dad was discharged from the hospital, Sophia showed up. She knelt outside his hospital room in a wrinkled shirt, her hair disheveled and her eyes sunken. In just half a month, she'd aged ten years. "Dad." Her voice was hoarse as she apologized. "I'm so sorry." Dad stood in the doorway, looking at her without saying a word. "Blake, I'm begging you. Please withdraw your complaint. Please stop pursuing this." She turned to me, tears streaming down her face. "The bar association is moving to revoke my law license, and the prosecutor's office intends to charge me with perjury. If I'm convicted, my entire life will be ruined." Still on her knees, she shuffled toward me and clutched my pants."I know I made a mistake. I shouldn't have helped Ethan, and I shouldn't have ignored what happened to your dad. I wasn't thinking straight. I was completely blinded by my own selfishness… but I really do love you, Blake." She then added, "I just never knew how to treat you right. I

I rose from the first row of the gallery and walked calmly toward the witness stand. Dressed in a sharply tailored business suit, with my short hair neatly styled, I strode into the courtroom with calm confidence. The moment Sophia saw me, her pupils contracted. The pen slipped from her fingers and clattered onto the table. Ethan's face twisted in horror. I walked over to the witness stand and handed a USB drive to the court clerk. "Your Honor, the surveillance footage submitted by defense attorney Sophia Walker has been deliberately edited to conceal the truth and misrepresent what happened. It is fabricated evidence." My voice remained steady as I continued, "I'm submitting the complete, unedited surveillance footage from the night of the incident, along with an audio recording of defense attorney Sophia Walker coaching the defendant, Ethan Cole, to give false testimony and helping him fabricate evidence.""Blake! You're making baseless accusations!" Sophia shot to her feet,

Over the next few days, I stayed at the hospital, accompanying Dad for his medical tests during the day while working with Jack at night to organize the evidence and prepare for the divorce proceedings. On the third day after surgery, Dad finally regained consciousness. When he opened his eyes and saw me sitting beside his bed, the first thing he said was, "Blake, don't worry about me. Just don't tell Sophia what happened. I don't want to cause her any trouble." Even now, he was still worried about inconveniencing Sophia, still afraid of upsetting his daughter-in-law or giving her another reason to take her anger out on me."Dad." I took a deep breath before continuing. "Sophia and I are getting a divorce."He froze, staring at me, his lips trembling as though he wanted to say something but couldn't find the words. Then tears began streaming down his face."Is this all because of me? I shouldn't have gone after that scammer. I shouldn't have—""Dad." I took his hand and spoke s

I flipped through the bank statements, so furious that I couldn't help laughing. Six months ago was when Ethan had returned from overseas and Sophia had started using her busy schedule at the law firm as an excuse to stay out all night.Throughout our three years of marriage, I'd always assumed she simply didn't love me. I'd never imagined she'd go so far as to strip me of even the dignity of walking away from our marriage with my head held high. "She wants me to leave with nothing." I closed the file, a cold glint flashing in my eyes. "Then I'll make sure she's the one who loses everything." …That afternoon, Sophia took Ethan to a private club on the outskirts of the city to wine and dine a few influential contacts. I took a cab straight home. The moment I stepped inside, I headed for the study Sophia had strictly forbidden me from entering. Sophia had always been arrogant and controlling. In her eyes, I was nothing more than a clueless househusband who knew nothing abo

Sophia was momentarily speechless, but a second later, she turned to the police officer and slipped back into her professional lawyer's demeanor. "Officer, this is a private family matter, and the suspect has already agreed to return the stolen money—" "Since when does returning stolen money erase the crime of inflicting serious bodily injury?" I cut in sharply."Ms. Walker, you know perfectly well that she's now a suspect in a separate case involving serious bodily injury, yet you're still trying to use money to strike a deal and secure her release on bail. Are you abusing your legal knowledge to obstruct justice?"The mediation room fell deathly silent. The officer glanced at the critical condition notice before snatching the prepared letter of forgiveness off the table. His expression hardened as he turned to Linda."The bail is revoked. Take her back into custody!" he announced. "What?" Linda's face twisted in panic as she whipped around to glare at Sophia. "What the h

  • No Longer Waiting for You to Change   Chapter 5

Jack and I arrived at the police station in no time. The moment we stepped inside, I spotted Sophia and Ethan sitting together in the mediation room. Ethan clung to Sophia's arm, a smug smile plastered across his face."Sophia, I knew you were the best." He looked nothing like the laid-back "buddy" he'd pretended to be at the law firm. Sitting across from them was a short-haired woman with a rough, streetwise look. Jack leaned toward me and lowered his voice. "That's Linda Mitchell. She's got several shell companies registered under her name and specializes in contract fraud. Your dad's 30 thousand dollars went straight into one of her accounts." Sophia looked up and spotted me, her brows immediately drawing together. "What are you doing here?" she demanded, barely concealing her irritation. "I already told you I'd have the finance department transfer 20 thousand dollars to you tomorrow. Why are you making a scene here?"Ethan released her arm and put on an innocent express
