Chapter 2 The Woman Who Came Back

Author: Mohini
Driven by years of hatred, I followed the address in the post to the awards ceremony.

Evelyn—the woman who should have been in hell paying for her sins—was standing onstage in a stunning gown, delivering her acceptance speech. "Professors, fellow students, thank you all so much for supporting my work. And most of all, I want to thank my mentor, Professor Langley. He was the one who gave me…"

The moment she saw me, her smile slowly disappeared.

Everyone in the room turned to look at me.

Cedric nervously grabbed my arm. "You can't come in without an invitation. You need to leave—"

I slapped him across the face and screamed, "How much longer are you going to keep lying to me? She's Elara!"

The room erupted in an uproar.

Evelyn timidly stepped backward, and Cedric quickly moved between us, lowering his voice. "Adeline, we'll talk about this when we get home. Be good."

I stared at him with bloodshot eyes as though he were a complete stranger.

I wanted to ask him how he could calmly coax me into pretending I had not seen any of this.

Before I could say anything, his students began gathering around me, speaking up indignantly.

"Mrs. Langley, it's been so long. I think it's time you let this go."

"You have no idea how much Evelyn has done for Professor Langley all these years. She's helped him finish one paper after another, and she takes care of him, too. You're just a housewife. Stop holding him back."

I opened my mouth, but no words came out.

The students who used to call me "Mrs. Langley" at every turn had apparently always seen me as nothing more than a parasite.

Just then, Cedric's grandmother, who suffered from dementia, was wheeled over in her wheelchair.

"Evelyn is my grandson's wife. Whenever she comes to visit, she sits and talks with me. Not like you. You're always crying at the hospital. You drive me crazy."

Every day, I changed her diapers, turned her over, and cleaned her body. I had cared for her more devotedly than the three caregivers before me. And yet, all of it still could not compare to a few sweet words from Evelyn.

Then, my brother stepped forward and spoke to me earnestly. "What's done is done. There's no point pursuing it anymore. The statute of limitations has expired, and the surveillance footage is no longer available.

"Cedric couldn't bear to see Evelyn go to prison when she was his student. Once I agreed to help them, I had to see it through. You're my sister. Do you really want to see me lose my job?"

I had trusted my only brother.

I had entrusted my son's case to him, believing he would give me a fair and just resolution.

Instead, he had simply dragged things out until all the evidence became unusable, ensuring Evelyn could live the rest of her life carefree.

Cedric reached up and wiped the tears from the corner of my eye.

"Maybe it's better that you know. Having to keep this secret buried all these years has been exhausting for me, too. Our son is already paralyzed. Sending Evelyn to prison won't change anything.

"Besides, it was an unintentional mistake. And she's currently going through an academic promotion review. She can't afford to have anything on her record. You understand that, don't you?"

He kept Evelyn firmly shielded behind him as everyone else looked at me warily. As if I were the monster everyone had to fear.

I stood there as the emotions churning inside me slowly ebbed away, leaving me without even the strength to make another scene.

"Cedric, we should get div—"

Before I could finish, the hospital suddenly called.

The voice on the other end was urgent. "Your child has a high fever that hasn't come down. Please come to the hospital as soon as possible!"

Cedric froze where he stood, clearly shaken by my words.I said nothing more. I simply grabbed my suitcase and boarded my flight without looking back.I soon received the latest update from my lawyer. …Evelyn had been charged with intentional murder and brought before the court. That very night, she called me, her voice unusually agitated. "Adeline, you destroyed the best years of my life! You bitch! I'll never let you get away with this!"I tightened my grip on my phone, my teeth chattering. "But you took a life. He was the most important person in my life."To my surprise, she let out a cold laugh. "He'd been lying in that bed for three years. He was useless even when he was alive. At most, I was just solving a problem for you."I was trembling with rage, but I forced myself to keep my anger in check. "That isn't for you to decide. Three years ago, letting you get away with it was my mistake. This time, I'll see it through to the end."Evelyn began screaming hysterically,

With my son's ashes in my arms, I began traveling the world.During the three years he lay in a hospital bed, he had tried countless times to speak. The sentence he said most often was, "Mom, I want to travel the world."I used to think that one day, he would recover. And when that day came, I would take him with me to see the world.I never imagined I would have to accompany him this way.…After arriving in yet another foreign country, my lawyer called. "Ms. Rosenthal, the police have completed their investigation. They confirmed that Mr. Langley's personal seal was misused by Evelyn, and he's been cleared."I was not surprised, but I still found it absurd.Maybe Cedric really had not meant for any of this to happen, but he should have believed me. He should have come to the hospital with me and withdrawn the application.Instead, he believed I was lying and stayed with her, knowing she was pregnant.Cedric's anguished screams came through the phone. "Adeline, you have to be

A loud ringing filled Cedric's ears. For a moment, it was as if he could not hear anything anymore. "Who… Who did you say died?"The officer repeated himself. "Gideon Langley. Your biological son has died.""That's impossible!" Cedric shouted in despair. "He was still lying in the hospital yesterday. How could he possibly be dead?"The officer said nothing. He simply handed Cedric the death notification. In the section for the family member's signature was Adeline's name. So, Adeline had not left because she was upset with him."No…" Cedric frantically pushed through the crowd and raced home."Adeline…" He pushed open the door, but the moment he stepped inside, he froze. In the enormous house, there was no trace of Adeline left. His grandmother was the only one there, lying on the floor and convulsing."Where's Adeline? Where is she…"Cedric completely broke down and helplessly slumped to the floor.…When the police caught up with him, they called an ambulance for the elder

The words "Divorce Agreement" were written in stark letters across the top of the document."What is this?"Cedric quickly flipped to the last page. Then he froze when he saw the name written there. Adeline Rosenthal. Her signature was neatly placed beneath his own.He remembered this document. He had promised that once all 100 reconciliation coupons had been used, their marriage would automatically be dissolved.Among the attachments, he found the record of all 100 coupons being used."Coupon No. 100: Cedric covered for Elara, betraying the trust my son and I placed in him.""It's… already the hundredth?"A wave of shock crashed through his mind.He immediately called Adeline's number. He was just about to demand an explanation, but all he got in response was the same mechanical voice repeating itself over and over."You've got to be kidding me."He could not believe Adeline would actually go through with the divorce. They had a completely paralyzed child. It was not as

There, unmistakably, was Cedric's personal seal. The sheer absurdity of it hit me like a blow.I took the consent form to the doctor. He could only sigh."It's true. The lawyer came in with the child's father's seal and submitted the euthanasia request. All the paperwork is in order. If you don't consent, you have three hours to discuss it with the child's father. He has to come in personally to withdraw the request."My heart stopped. For a moment, I did not even know which way to turn.Time and again, friends and relatives had seen our son suffering and tried to hint that euthanasia might be kinder."At least it would be a release for him."Cedric had always been the first to object. "That's my son. I can't just watch him die."So why had he suddenly agreed?Rage completely overwhelmed my reason. Clutching the consent form, I hurried home.…Cedric was in the kitchen making chicken soup, while Evelyn sat on the couch eating fruit. The moment he saw me, he hurried over a

When we rushed to the hospital, our son had already been wheeled into the operating room for emergency surgery.Halfway through the procedure, the doctor came out, his expression grave. "His condition is extremely unstable. All I can do is try my best to keep his vital signs stable."My knees gave out. I caught myself against the wall, barely managing to stay upright.Evelyn said timidly, "This is all my fault…""Of course it is!" I could not take it anymore. I shoved her, nearly spent from everything that had happened. "If you two hadn't gotten together behind my back, my son wouldn't be lying in there!"The next second, Cedric grabbed me and pulled me away, his expression darkening. "This is a hospital, not a place for you to cause a scene! And she's about to be evaluated for a promotion. Can you stop dragging up the past?"When he saw my bloodshot eyes, he added, "At worst, we'll use another reconciliation card and put this behind us."From the very first day of our marriage,
