Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
Since Celeste loved Lester that much, I decided I'd stop clinging to her.

What worried me now was Lily's treatment money.

The thought of Lily still lying in the intensive care unit filled me with guilt and pain.

While I was lost in thought, the door to my hospital room opened.

A young, beautiful woman walked in. She wore a tracksuit, a low-key baseball cap, and sunglasses that hid most of her small face.

She was the driver of the Porsche that had hit me.

"You finally woke up."

Cordelia White sat down beside me naturally and poured me a glass of water.

"Does anything still hurt?"

Only then did I realize I was in a private hospital's high-end single room. A room like this cost tens of thousands a day. Cordelia must have paid for my medical expenses all this time.

I understood the situation and thanked her calmly.

"Thank you. Please send me the bill. I'll transfer the fees to you later."

I tried to sit up, but Cordelia pressed a hand to my shoulder. She was very close. I could smell a faint fragrance on her.

She leaned in. Her tone carried an emotion I couldn't quite name, almost like temptation.

"Your name's Ryan Sheridan, right? I want to make a deal with you."

Cordelia brushed back her dark wavy hair and looked straight at me.

"I need someone to marry."

I stared at her in shock.

Cordelia smiled like a fox.

"I know your situation. Marry me, and I can save your sister. I can hire the best lawyers to help you recover the money your girlfriend took from you.

"Three years. After three years, we divorce. For those three years, we each take what we need."

I thought of Lily still lying in the ICU, and of Celeste's lie after lie. My heart tasted bitter.

As if I'd been bewitched by Cordelia, I nodded.

After asking around, I learned why Cordelia wanted to marry me.

She was the eldest daughter of the White family in the city. On the surface, she was rebellious and reckless. In reality, she was sharp, capable, and ruthless. She was fighting her cousin to the death over the family inheritance.

That accident had happened because her cousin had arranged for a semi-truck to hit her. Cordelia had no choice but to wrench the wheel aside, and that was how she struck my car.

Marrying me was also part of an inheritance requirement. She needed a marriage to unlock part of her claim.

Still, Cordelia only made one demand of me.

I couldn't cheat during the marriage.

That was something I could do. Cordelia was afraid I'd stay entangled with Celeste, so she made the condition clear.

When I thought of Celeste, bitterness rose in my chest. From the moment she said we were finished for the last time, it was already over.

This time, I wouldn't coax her back.

In a fancy hotel in a resort island, Celeste and Lester woke up naked in the same bed. Celeste's body was covered in marks.

Remembering what had happened the night before, Celeste looked dazed and pale.

Lester hugged her from behind, his voice gentle.

"I'm sorry, Celeste. I love you too much. Last night, I couldn't hold back."

Celeste took a deep breath and pushed him away. Her tone was cold.

"It won't happen again."

She took her phone to the balcony. When she saw there were no messages or calls from me, her expression grew uglier.

Two days earlier, she'd stopped paying Lily's treatment fees. When she called the doctor, she learned Lily had been transferred to another hospital.

Celeste assumed I could no longer afford treatment and had moved Lily out of the ICU.

She opened our chat box, typed and deleted several times, then finally sent me a message.

"I know you have no money. Let's see how long you can keep this up."

When I received Celeste's message, I'd already moved into Cordelia's private villa.

Cordelia had arranged everything for me and transferred Lily to the best private hospital.

Cordelia glanced at my phone screen. Her eyes drifted slightly.

Celeste's eyes dodged slightly, but her expression had already calmed."Of course I know who the father of my child is."Cordelia asked, "So you mean you never had anything to do with another man?"Celeste looked offended."What do you mean by that, sister? I know you're upset, but you don't need to slander me like this."Cordelia's lips curved. She made a phone call and said only, "Come in."Less than five minutes later, the butler brought a familiar face before Old Mr. White. When Celeste saw Lester Carter, her face drained of color.Cordelia smiled like a fox."Mr. Carter, you tell us."Lester looked at Celeste with complicated eyes, then swept a glance over me and spoke with certainty."Celeste's child is mine."She was shameless. While she was still dating Ryan, she was flirting with me."She's been stringing Ryan along the whole time. She never wanted to marry Ryan. What she wanted was the entire White family."Celeste lunged at Lester like a madwoman, grabbing his

"Ryan, are you in the study?"Cordelia's voice sounded outside, and the door opened. When she saw the diary in my hand, embarrassment flashed across her face. Then she blushed, snatched the diary away, and muttered quietly."How did you find this?"Looking at Cordelia's reddened cheeks, I stepped forward and hugged her tightly.Cordelia could barely breathe from how hard I held her, but she hugged me back and asked softly, "What's wrong?"I kissed the top of her head. My voice trembled."Nothing. I just wanted to hold you."I didn't know what Cordelia must have felt all those years watching me pour my whole heart into Celeste. After all, I knew better than anyone what it felt like to love someone who loved someone else."Ryan, let's not separate."Cordelia buried her face in my chest, her voice muffled. After that day, Cordelia and I grew even closer. The hazy, invisible barrier between us finally broke. The next time I saw Celeste was at Cordelia's grandfather's eightieth

Natalie saw through my thoughts and smiled bitterly."That's not what I mean. We're all former classmates. I just can't bear to see Celeste become like this. Cordelia has been too ruthless with the two of them."Cordelia's doing?Natalie said Cordelia had driven Lester's and Celeste's company toward collapse. They were already drowning in debt.I lowered my head and watched the wine in my glass catch the light. I couldn't describe what I felt.Suddenly, a pair of hands settled on my shoulders. Cordelia took the glass from me and replaced it with warm milk."Your stomach's been acting up again these past few days. Don't drink."Feeling the warmth of the milk in my hand, my heart seemed to be wrapped in warmth too. After seven or eight years with Celeste, she'd never known I had stomach problems.Cordelia brushed back her hair and smiled without smiling."Miss Wells, if you have work questions, you can come to me. Don't bother my husband."Natalie forced a laugh and slipped aw

"Celeste, why are you shouting here? Ryan's the man of this house."I could feel Cordelia's arm stiffen. She felt insecure. My heart softened. I held her hand in return and pulled her into my arms.I could clearly feel Cordelia's body relax, as if the pressure around us had eased."Celeste, understand your own status."Your mother was the mistress. Are you planning to follow the same path?"So Celeste was the White family's illegitimate daughter. She'd been raised outside the family and used her mother's surname. Now it was Celeste's turn to be stunned. She stared at the intimacy between Cordelia and me. Her eyes widened in disbelief, and her face went pale. Her thin body swayed."This is impossible. I'm Ryan's fiancee!"As she shouted, everything seemed to click into place for her. The reason I'd entered Riverside Villas was because Cordelia lived there. I was with Cordelia.Celeste's shout drew curious looks from the people around us.But she didn't dare make too much of

She held my hand and took a photo, then posted it online. At her request, I posted the same photo. Soon, the comments filled with congratulations."Congrats, Ryan. You and Celeste finally made it from campus to the altar!""Oh my God, from college sweethearts to marriage. So romantic!"I replied under the comments in one line:"Thank you for your blessings. My wife is Cordelia White."After that, I turned off my phone and spent the long night with Cordelia, leaving everyone in the comments section completely stunned.Celeste received the news too.One of her friends called her."Celeste, your half sister Cordelia got married. A flash marriage, no less."I heard the man has no background. She just picked someone at random."Celeste was making tea. When she heard that, she sneered."That brainless woman will do anything for inheritance rights."Once she helped Lester's business succeed, she'd be able to use the new project to enter the ranks of rising business elites. Celeste asked with her arms crossed, as if she had every right.I saw the fading marks still on her neck and felt only irony. My tone was calm."We've already broken up. Who I'm with is my business."Celeste snapped impatiently, "Ryan, are you done making a scene? First you staged a car accident, and now this? What exactly are you trying to do?"Don't forget who chased after whom back then."I looked at Celeste, and disappointment settled completely in my heart. So my love had become a blade she could use to stab me whenever she pleased.I took the hospital records from my bag and handed them to her.The more Celeste read, the more startled she became."Ryan, I...""I didn't know. I was busy with something then."Her eyes dodged mine. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around my waist, burying her face against me."Ryan, stop this, okay? We're about to get engaged. We'll stop fighting from now on."Once I help Lester make his comeback, we'll get our marriage license.
