Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
"Your ex-girlfriend?"

She emphasized the word ex on purpose.

I laughed softly and replied to Celeste in front of Cordelia.

"We've already broken up. Miss Quinn, please stop bothering me."

Cordelia tugged at my fingers, her voice bright and coy.

"Pick a date in a few days. We'll get the marriage certificate."

I nodded and said yes.

Although Cordelia and I hadn't registered our marriage yet, we held a grand wedding first.

The wedding lasted the entire day.

By evening, I helped Cordelia stumble into our wedding suite.

She'd clearly drunk too much. Her eyes were hazy, and her usually fair skin had a faint flush from the alcohol.

I swallowed and forced myself to look away.

I helped her take off her heels and was about to leave when Cordelia caught my hand.

"Where do you think you're going? Today's our wedding. Plenty of people are still watching outside."

Her palm was hot enough to make me flinch.

I said, "Then I'll sleep on the sofa."

As soon as I said it, Cordelia grabbed my tie and pulled me down over her.

"If we're acting, we act all the way. Do you understand?"

"But..."

"But what? I'm not some antique. It's just a first time. Consider yourself lucky."

Then she kissed me first.

My eyes widened. At first, I tried to resist, but as the kiss deepened, my body began to obey her honestly.

When I woke the next morning, everything still felt unreal.

Cordelia was still asleep in my arms. Under my hand was the smooth warmth of her skin. She'd buried her face against my chest, and the atmosphere was calmer than I'd ever known.

It was hard to imagine that such a ruthless woman could be so soft the night before.

She turned over and hugged me, her voice gentle and sleepy.

"Ryan..."

I made Cordelia breakfast. Watching her eat happily like a little squirrel warmed something inside me.

Celeste had never cared for anything I cooked.

"I know you married me for a reason, but why me?"

My sudden question caught Cordelia off guard. She froze for a moment before realizing I was asking why she'd chosen me.

Cordelia thought seriously.

"You look like my first love."

I was surprised. Even a powerful woman like her had once loved someone she couldn't have.

"My first love was in college. He already had a girlfriend at the time."

I nodded. As expected, love ruins people.

I'd secretly loved Celeste in high school. Back then, she and Lester had loved each other fiercely, while I quietly watched over her.

Later, Lester went abroad. Celeste and I both got into the same university in the city.

In our sophomore year, she and Lester broke up because of the distance. I finally managed to win Celeste over.

That night, Celeste drank herself senseless at a bar, and I brought her back to campus.

She clung to my arm and cried as if her heart had been torn apart. She said, "Ryan, you must never let me down."

My heart ached for her. I held her hand tightly, pulled her into my arms, and made a solemn promise.

Now, all of that had turned me into a joke.

I went back once to the place Celeste and I used to share.

Dust had settled on the cabinets and table. Celeste hadn't been back for a long time.

I packed my things and took all my personal belongings with me.

Looking at the nearly empty suitcase, I felt complicated.

I had very few things. Most of what filled the home belonged to Celeste. The rest were couple items I'd bought on my own.

Celeste had never been interested in any of them.

Then the exquisite ring box on the nightstand caught my eye.

Before the car crash, I'd ordered a custom pair of matching rings and placed them beside the bed, hoping to surprise Celeste when she came home.

Celeste's eyes dodged slightly, but her expression had already calmed."Of course I know who the father of my child is."Cordelia asked, "So you mean you never had anything to do with another man?"Celeste looked offended."What do you mean by that, sister? I know you're upset, but you don't need to slander me like this."Cordelia's lips curved. She made a phone call and said only, "Come in."Less than five minutes later, the butler brought a familiar face before Old Mr. White. When Celeste saw Lester Carter, her face drained of color.Cordelia smiled like a fox."Mr. Carter, you tell us."Lester looked at Celeste with complicated eyes, then swept a glance over me and spoke with certainty."Celeste's child is mine."She was shameless. While she was still dating Ryan, she was flirting with me."She's been stringing Ryan along the whole time. She never wanted to marry Ryan. What she wanted was the entire White family."Celeste lunged at Lester like a madwoman, grabbing his

"Ryan, are you in the study?"Cordelia's voice sounded outside, and the door opened. When she saw the diary in my hand, embarrassment flashed across her face. Then she blushed, snatched the diary away, and muttered quietly."How did you find this?"Looking at Cordelia's reddened cheeks, I stepped forward and hugged her tightly.Cordelia could barely breathe from how hard I held her, but she hugged me back and asked softly, "What's wrong?"I kissed the top of her head. My voice trembled."Nothing. I just wanted to hold you."I didn't know what Cordelia must have felt all those years watching me pour my whole heart into Celeste. After all, I knew better than anyone what it felt like to love someone who loved someone else."Ryan, let's not separate."Cordelia buried her face in my chest, her voice muffled. After that day, Cordelia and I grew even closer. The hazy, invisible barrier between us finally broke. The next time I saw Celeste was at Cordelia's grandfather's eightieth

Natalie saw through my thoughts and smiled bitterly."That's not what I mean. We're all former classmates. I just can't bear to see Celeste become like this. Cordelia has been too ruthless with the two of them."Cordelia's doing?Natalie said Cordelia had driven Lester's and Celeste's company toward collapse. They were already drowning in debt.I lowered my head and watched the wine in my glass catch the light. I couldn't describe what I felt.Suddenly, a pair of hands settled on my shoulders. Cordelia took the glass from me and replaced it with warm milk."Your stomach's been acting up again these past few days. Don't drink."Feeling the warmth of the milk in my hand, my heart seemed to be wrapped in warmth too. After seven or eight years with Celeste, she'd never known I had stomach problems.Cordelia brushed back her hair and smiled without smiling."Miss Wells, if you have work questions, you can come to me. Don't bother my husband."Natalie forced a laugh and slipped aw

"Celeste, why are you shouting here? Ryan's the man of this house."I could feel Cordelia's arm stiffen. She felt insecure. My heart softened. I held her hand in return and pulled her into my arms.I could clearly feel Cordelia's body relax, as if the pressure around us had eased."Celeste, understand your own status."Your mother was the mistress. Are you planning to follow the same path?"So Celeste was the White family's illegitimate daughter. She'd been raised outside the family and used her mother's surname. Now it was Celeste's turn to be stunned. She stared at the intimacy between Cordelia and me. Her eyes widened in disbelief, and her face went pale. Her thin body swayed."This is impossible. I'm Ryan's fiancee!"As she shouted, everything seemed to click into place for her. The reason I'd entered Riverside Villas was because Cordelia lived there. I was with Cordelia.Celeste's shout drew curious looks from the people around us.But she didn't dare make too much of

She held my hand and took a photo, then posted it online. At her request, I posted the same photo. Soon, the comments filled with congratulations."Congrats, Ryan. You and Celeste finally made it from campus to the altar!""Oh my God, from college sweethearts to marriage. So romantic!"I replied under the comments in one line:"Thank you for your blessings. My wife is Cordelia White."After that, I turned off my phone and spent the long night with Cordelia, leaving everyone in the comments section completely stunned.Celeste received the news too.One of her friends called her."Celeste, your half sister Cordelia got married. A flash marriage, no less."I heard the man has no background. She just picked someone at random."Celeste was making tea. When she heard that, she sneered."That brainless woman will do anything for inheritance rights."Once she helped Lester's business succeed, she'd be able to use the new project to enter the ranks of rising business elites. Celeste asked with her arms crossed, as if she had every right.I saw the fading marks still on her neck and felt only irony. My tone was calm."We've already broken up. Who I'm with is my business."Celeste snapped impatiently, "Ryan, are you done making a scene? First you staged a car accident, and now this? What exactly are you trying to do?"Don't forget who chased after whom back then."I looked at Celeste, and disappointment settled completely in my heart. So my love had become a blade she could use to stab me whenever she pleased.I took the hospital records from my bag and handed them to her.The more Celeste read, the more startled she became."Ryan, I...""I didn't know. I was busy with something then."Her eyes dodged mine. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around my waist, burying her face against me."Ryan, stop this, okay? We're about to get engaged. We'll stop fighting from now on."Once I help Lester make his comeback, we'll get our marriage license.
