Chapter 3

Author: Triple Six
The golden window to treat an amniotic fluid embolism lasted barely 15 minutes. It was literally doctors racing against death itself.

Over the past three years, Lauren had saved five patients with amniotic fluid embolism and had failed only once. Due to this success rate, she rose and became the head obstetrician at Mercy Hospital for Women.

When Patrick's call was connected, he desperately rambled, "Lauren, get to the hospital now! Hannah has an amniotic fluid embolism, and only you can save her!"

There were sounds of kids laughing and shouting on the other end of the line, glasses clinking, and adults chatting in the background.

"Uncle Patrick, did you lose your mind too? Are you seriously playing along with Charles' crazy act? Enough is enough! I spend every single day of the year taking care of him. I just wanted one peaceful day to myself, and you can't even let me have that?

"Isaac and I don't have anything going on. His family just came back to visit, and I'm having dinner with them. So please stop calling me!"

Patrick panicked. "Lauren, I'm not lying! Hannah is in a dire state. She has an amniotic fluid embolism, and only you can save her now! I'm begging you–please come back, or you'll regret it!"

"I'd only regret it if I went back!" Lauren's voice came out emotionless.

Hearing Lauren's voice, Gina broke down and grabbed the phone, sobbing, "Lauren, Patrick isn't lying to you! Hannah really is in trouble! Even if you don't believe Charles or Patrick, you'll believe me, won't you? Come back right now!"

I sighed inwardly. To me, Gina was not a good person. After all, she knew Lauren was cheating, but she still helped in hiding it. Nonetheless, to Hannah, she was a good mother.

"Lauren, did you hear that? Your own mother wouldn't lie to you! Why aren't you coming back?" Patrick practically shouted in frustration.

"Mom, you..." Lauren's voice wavered with hesitation.

"Ahh! Lauren, my eye! My eye hurts so bad!"

A man's pained cry rang out, accompanied by an adult scolding a child.

"How could you shoot a marble at your uncle's face like that?"

Suddenly, Lauren's concerned voice came through the phone. "Isaac, does it hurt? Don't move. I'm a doctor, let me take a look!"

Then, her voice turned urgent yet ice-cold as she spoke into the phone. "Mom, stop fooling around. Even if what you're saying is true, it doesn't matter. I've had quite a bit to drink and can't drive. I can't make it back."

With that, she hung up.

The phone slipped from Gina's hands and hit the floor with a sharp crack. Then, she dropped to her knees, her head hitting the ground as she lay there motionless.

Patrick sank beside her, tears streaming down his face. "What happened to her? How could she become like this? How can she ignore her family for some man? She's an animal!"

I helped Gina to her feet and saw the red mark swelling on her forehead from where she had hit the ground. I almost pitied her. Almost.

Still, I could not feel sorry for her. After all, in my past life, she had played her part in driving me to my death.

I did not know how much time had passed when the operating room doors opened again.

"I'm sorry. We did everything we could."

Hannah and her baby were both gone. Gina seemed like a shell of herself, refusing to eat or drink, only clutching Hannah's clothes and crying.

Patrick was furious and repeated the entire hospital ordeal to every relative, cursing Lauren as a monster.

When Hannah's in-laws learned about the news, they broke down sobbing. Jacob rushed back from out of town that same day. The moment he saw his dead wife and son, his face twisted in anguish, and his eyes turned bloodshot.

In the last three days of the divorce cooling-off period, Jacob finally began exacting his vengeance. He was far more ruthless than I had imagined. While I only saw Isaac and Sarah as the true culprits, Jacob broke into the Poole family home in the middle of the night and slaughtered all six members: Isaac's parents, his brother and sister-in-law, Isaac himself, and Sarah.Sarah's arms and legs were severed, and she bled to death in agony. Isaac's organs were ripped out, and his tongue was cut off. The others were all killed with a single fatal blow. That same night, while Lauren was on a late shift at the hospital, Jacob used Isaac's phone to text her.[Lauren, I made some snacks. But your mom's there, so I can't go upstairs. Come down and grab them.]Lauren glanced at the sleeping Gina and quickly headed downstairs. In the darkness, a faint smile of anticipation appeared on her face."Isaac? Isaac, where are you?""Lauren, you monster! You don't deserve to be Hannah's sister!"

Perhaps I was too harsh-sounding, but Lauren snapped without thinking, "Keep dreaming!"I raised my phone slightly. "You can refuse to sign, but this recording will end up on the phones of everyone you know."Lauren lunged at me, snatched my phone, and smashed it to the floor with a loud crack.I took a few steps back to keep my distance and said calmly, "I already set up a scheduled email. If I don't cancel it by three in the evening., that recording will be sent to the Mercy Hospital for Women's official site, every major gossip blog, and Jacob.""Charles, why are you doing this to me?!" she cried. "I told you, there's nothing between Isaac and me. I never betrayed you... How long are you going to keep making a scene?""A scene? Lauren, after everything that's happened, you still think I'm making a fuss over your affair? Is Hannah's life worth so little to you?"Let me tell you something... I'm divorcing you because I refuse to live with a monster who only cares about romance a

"Mr. Orwell, draft a divorce agreement for me. I'll leave with nothing."I feared that if I waited too long, the Martinez family would pin Hannah's death on me to protect Lauren's reputation. Surely they were capable of it.Did they really not know I was innocent in my past life? No, they were just playing dumb. When I walked into Gina's house holding the divorce agreement, my suspicions were confirmed."Charles, how dare you come back here! I already asked Sarah, and she said you were the one who told her to push Hannah! You murderer!" Lauren pointed at me and accused me harshly.Gina looked at me with disbelief in her eyes, and Patrick's face was full of hatred.I let out a cold laugh and threw the divorce agreement onto the table. "Lauren, everyone who was there knows exactly how Hannah died. If you insist on blaming me for Hannah's death, then let's call the police. Manipulating a minor to commit a crime is illegal.""We can't call the police!" Lauren rejected the idea witho

I endured the pain throughout my body and let out a cold laugh. What a perfect family; they really were all the same."It's not my fault! It was Charles's! He was jealous of Hannah and misled me, stopping me from coming back. He's the one who killed Hannah!" screamed Lauren. She even tried to get up again, wanting to attack me.Jacob's veins bulged with rage. If his parents had not been right there, he might have believed Lauren's lies. He shoved Lauren back to the ground and pulled out his phone to show her a surveillance video. It was footage from the day of the incident. In the video, a child suddenly ran over from a distance. She pushed Hannah down and kicked her in the stomach while hurling vicious insults, calling her a 'fat pig' and other cruel names.I had sent this video to Jacob anonymously, of course. In my past life, with Lauren protecting her, Isaac's niece–the real culprit–had escaped responsibility right up until my death. In this life, I, of course, would not le

Patrick wiped the rain from his face and pointed at the casket, sneering, "You wanted to see Hannah? Well, here she is."Lauren staggered toward the casket. Suddenly, her legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the ground."Who are you putting on this act for? Charles begged you to come back, and you said he was lying. I told you to come back, and you said I was lying. Gina got on her knees begging you to come back, and you said the same thing."Did you really think we were all lying to you? Or is it that in your heart, Hannah's life wasn't worth as much as having dinner with another man?""No, that's not true! Hannah is my sister. I practically raised her myself! I loved her like my own child!"The truth was, Hannah and I never got along. She lost her father young, and both Gina and Lauren spoiled her endlessly, so she grew up willful and entitled. Because Lauren often treated me with indifference, Hannah never showed me an ounce of respect either, always bossing me around and spea

  • No More Mr. Nice Husband   Chapter 4

Jacob refused to accept that Hannah was gone. He had only been on a business trip for three days. Before the trip, they had talked about their future together and imagined the life they would build as a family of three. When he learned the truth from his parents, he wiped his tears and quietly arranged the funeral with me.No one thought to inform Lauren, especially after finding out that she had been at a hotel across from the hospital, having dinner with Isaac and his family. She did not even bother to check if the news was true.Even Gina lost faith in her.Of course, I would never let Lauren miss something this important. The day before Hannah's burial, I made sure someone told her.It drizzled that morning. I stood beside my car, holding an umbrella, watching people carry Hannah's casket out from the funeral tent. In my past life, this was the day Jacob had hacked me to death with a knife, my blood mixing with the rainwater to create a red carpet for Hannah. Before the caske
