Later that night, Sade pulled into her driveway, her headlights briefly illuminating the black Malibu parked on the curb in front of her house. She recognized the car immediately—it was Marco’s grandmother’s. She let out a heavy sigh, her fingers tightening around the steering wheel as she stared at the vehicle.

The frustration from earlier that day bubbled up again. Sade had been clear in her message, but clearly, Marco wasn’t ready to let things go. She shut off the engine, grabbed her keys, and sat still for a moment. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes, inhaled deeply, and slowly exhaled, trying to calm her nerves before facing him.

Finally, she stepped out of her car, leaving her bag and purse behind. Normally, she’d go through the back door, but since Marco was parked at the front, she decided to handle this head-on. Her boots crunched against the gravel as she walked up to his car.

The moment Marco spotted her, he opened his door, stepped out, and slammed it shut behind h

As the night continued, the holiday party transitioned into a lively white elephant gift exchange. Over 150 people participated, each unwrapping their surprises with laughter and excitement. Sade unwrapped hers, a pair of elegant crystal candle holders. She smiled, admiring them for a moment before making her way back to the table, where Marco sat, still glued to his phone. She placed the candle holders down and gently tapped his shoulder. He startled slightly, quickly closing his phone before looking up at her.“What’s going on?” she asked, her voice light but with a hint of curiosity.“Nothing,” he responded almost too quickly. She crossed her arms. “So why have you been texting all night?”Marco sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s just my brother. We’re trying to plan something big for Grandma.”Sade’s expression softened. “Oh! You should have told me. I want to help plan something for her too. She does so much for us, picking up the kids, watching them when my parents aren

Sade’s POVSade sat in the passenger seat of her Audi, staring out at the city lights flickering past the window. The holiday decorations cast a warm glow over Chicago, but inside the car, the air was anything but festive.Marco had been acting strange for weeks, picking fights over nothing, then drowning her in affection like he was trying to make up for something unspoken. Tonight was no different. He had barely said three words to her on the way over, his fingers drumming against the steering wheel, his jaw tight. And yet, when he had seen her step out in her red mermaid style dress, his eyes had darkened with something raw something almost desperate. He reached over now, resting a hand on her thigh. “You look beautiful, baby.”Sade forced a smile. “Thanks.”It should’ve made her feel good, but it didn’t. His voice was warm, but his energy was distant.Something was off. When they arrived at Revel Motor Row, a professional photographer stood outside, capturing shots of guests as th

Marco’s POV Marco walks through the kitchen, the smell of turkey, one roasting and one frying making his mouth water. The house is alive with the sounds of family preparing for the big dinner. His mind is still racing from all the preparations, but there’s one thing he can’t ignore. “Hey, babe, can you go down to the basement and grab the coolers for me?” Sade’s voice calls out as she arranges the food on the kitchen counter. “Sure thing,” Marco replies, offering her a quick smile before heading toward the basement. As he steps into the hallway, Marco is greeted by the warm, rich smell of his grandmother Maria’s cooking. He hears her call from the kitchen just as he reaches the basement door. “Marco, sweetie, could you go to the basement for me too? I know, Sade and you have some extra tables down there. Not the long ones, you know, the card tables?” Maria’s voice is light, with just a hint of playful annoyance. Marco chuckles to himself. His grandmother is always giving him tas

Sade’s Point of ViewMonday mornings were always hectic, but Sade preferred it that way. It kept her focused. The latest clinical trial results for the Alzheimer’s treatment she’d been working on were showing real promise, and she was deep in her reports when Cheryl suddenly leaned in, whispering with urgency.“Oh my God. He’s here.”Sade didn’t even look up. “Who?”Cheryl gave her an exasperated look. “Seriously? Adamo Rossi.”At that, Sade’s gaze flickered up briefly.Adamo had just entered, moving through the office at his usual unhurried pace, nodding in acknowledgment as people greeted him. His presence had that effortless command, the kind that made people sit up straighter, pay attention. He had grown a short beard since she’d last seen him up close, and she had to admit it suited him.She noticed. But that was it. A passing thought.Unlike Cheryl, who was practically preening in her chair, subtly adjusting her blouse and checking her reflection in her phone screen.“Does my ma

Marco’s POVThe house was quiet as I unlocked the front door and stepped inside. The clock on the microwave read 4:30 a.m. I let out a slow breath, rubbing a hand down my face. My body still hummed from what had happened with Isla, but my stomach was tight with guilt.I didn't even know how it had escalated like that. One minute, we were talking, and the next...I swallowed hard and forced the thought away.As I moved through the living room, my eyes landed on Sade. She was curled up on the couch, her chest slowly rising and falling, our baby girl sprawled across her, both of them knocked out. A tiny snore escaped from Sade’s lips, and a softer one followed from the baby. For a second, everything inside me twisted. This was my family. My home. And I had just betrayed them.I exhaled slowly, tiptoeing past them toward the stairs. My legs felt heavy, my body sluggish, but my mind raced. Maybe if I could just crawl into bed and sleep, this weight sitting on my chest would lessen.I reach

Isla’s POVThe living room was dimly lit, the only glow coming from the lamp in the corner and the faint city lights seeping through the blinds. The air between us felt heavy charged with something I wasn’t sure either of us could control.Marco stood a few steps away, hands shoved into his pockets, his jaw tight like he was fighting a battle within himself. I wasn’t any better. My heart pounded so hard I swore he could hear it, and I couldn’t seem to look away from him.We shouldn’t be doing this.“We should stop,” I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper.Marco’s lips twitched, but it wasn’t amusement. It was frustration. “Then tell me to go, and you can call an Uber to take you to your in-laws' house to pick up your kids. ”I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.Instead of answering, I found myself taking a small step forward. Marco didn’t move away. His eyes darkened, his breathing deepening as I closed the space between us.The moment our bodies brushed, a slow exhale left h
