Sade’s POV

Halloween in Chicago always had a certain magic to it, the crisp air, the leaves crunching underfoot, and the excitement buzzing in the city. But today, the excitement wasn’t just about trick or treating or the plans for later that night.

Today, Adamo Rossi was walking into the lab.

Sade was at her workstation, finalizing details for the clinical trial, when she heard the sudden shift in the office’s energy. The quiet hum of work had been replaced with hushed whispers, stolen glances, and subtle gasps.

Then she heard it.

A voice, deep, smooth, and laced with an intoxicating Italian accent.

Oh boy.

She glanced up just as Adamo Rossi stepped into the lab, and she had to admit—this man was something else.

Tall. A jawline sculpted by the gods. Dark, perfectly styled hair. A tailored suit that fit like a second skin.

And his presence? Commanding. Effortless.

She didn’t even have to turn her head to know Cheryl was internally combusting beside her.

Anonymous POV The air inside St. Sabina Catholic Church was thick with sorrow. The stained glass windows cast colorful rays onto the pews, but no light could soften the grief that hung over the congregation. The funeral service for Travis Matthew Santiago was a devastating affair.Sade sat in the front row, her body trembling as she clutched a tissue in one hand and Marco’s hand in the other. Her sobs were uncontrollable, her shoulders shaking as she buried her face into her husband's chest. Their four children sat beside them, confused and quiet, sensing the weight of the moment even if they didn’t fully understand it.Marco… he was beside himself. His usual calm and collected demeanor had shattered, and he sat hunched forward, elbows on his knees, hands clasped tightly together. His eyes were bloodshot, his jaw clenched, but every so often, he wiped at his face, unable to stop the tears from falling.Isla and Shane sat nearby, their hands intertwined, their faces streaked with tear

Anonymous POV A decade had passed since that graduation day at Malcolm X College. The caps had been tossed, the diplomas framed, and the youthful dreams of their past had transformed into the reality of adulthood.Chicago had always been home, but now, it was more than just a city; it was the foundation of their lives. Sade and Isla had stayed rooted in their hometown, building families, careers, and a bond that had only strengthened with time.Sade, now 28, walked briskly through the halls of Northwestern University Hospital. Her white lab coat flared slightly as she turned a corner, a clipboard in one hand and her phone in the other. She was reviewing trial results for a new migraine medication when her phone vibrated with an incoming call.Isla.Sade smiled before answering. "What's up, sis?""Are you at work?" Isla’s voice came through, light but carrying the weight of familiarity."When am I not?" Sade replied, adjusting the glasses perched on her nose. "I got rounds with the re

Anonymous POV The buzz of excitement filled the air outside Malcolm X College, where a sea of students in various colored caps and gowns gathered in clusters, laughing, chatting, and adjusting their honor cords. The Chicago sun was warm but not unbearable, casting a golden glow over the momentous day.Sade stood near the entrance, adjusting her cap in the reflection of her phone screen. The navy-blue gown of her school fluttered slightly in the wind, and she made sure her National Honor Society cords were draped perfectly over her shoulders. Today wasn’t just a day to celebrate; it was the final chapter of their high school years before life took them all in different directions.Nearby, Isla tightened the sash on her own gown, her sunglasses perched on top of her head. Though she smiled and laughed along with the group, Sade could tell—there was a sadness lingering beneath her usual spark. Today was one of those days when the absence of her mom felt overwhelming.Sade took a deep br

The Morning After The warm glow of Saturday morning streamed through Sade’s bedroom window as she sat on the edge of her bed, lacing up her sneakers. Her White Sox jersey hung loosely over a pair of fitted shorts, the matching one Marco had picked out for them both. It was their thing—coordinating outfits, marking themselves as an unshakable unit. But as she adjusted her jersey in the mirror, her mind was elsewhere. Why would Isla say that? The words from last night replayed in her head like a song stuck on repeat. Isla, of all people, had always acted like Marco was the most annoying person alive. So why would she, in the middle of the biggest night of their senior year, slip up and say that? Sade shook her head, grabbing her phone from the nightstand. I need answers. She dialed Isla’s number. It rang. And rang. Then went to voicemail. Hmm. She tried again. Same result. Frustrated, she tapped on Tamara’s contact instead. The phone barely rang twice before Tamara’s voice came

The students danced under a cascade of twinkling chandeliers, the music pulsing through the room as laughter and excitement filled the air.Sade and Marco swayed together on the dance floor, lost in their own world. Star, as always, was working the room, snapping selfies and stealing the spotlight in her silver dress. She waved over Sade with a mischievous grin.“Come on, let’s sneak off for a minute!” Star said, grabbing Sade’s hand and dragging her toward the restrooms. Rachel, Travis’s girlfriend, trailed behind, her heels clicking on the polished marble floors.Inside the ladies’ room, the trio leaned against the sinks, touching up their makeup and laughing about the night.Star glanced at her reflection and smirked. “Next week, my prom.
