Chapter 4

Author: 12 Cents
I was the only one who could clearly see Eddie's hand suddenly grabbing and pulling on Peanut's white and golden fur. How painful it must be for Peanut.

Sonia's expression darkened when Peanut yelped in pain, and she got mad. "This dog is just like his owner! They're both ingrates!"

She pulled Eddie along with her and left, carrying the baby in her arms, leaving Peanut behind at the door, looking sad. He bit on a rubber ball I used to play with him, and looked like he was waiting for me.

It made me want to cry.

Peanut might be a small mongrel, but Sonia and I saved him when we were still dating. He had been abandoned at birth, and Sonia and I spent sleepless nights feeding him milk and bringing him up. He was just like a child to us.

He had no idea that his daddy would not be coming home.

Sonia handed the baby over to the nanny upstairs and called the housekeeper to give him instructions. "Conroy, Eddie doesn't take spicy food. Tell the kitchen to avoid onions, ginger and garlic in his diet. Also, he only uses silk for his bedspread, or he'll end up with rashes…"

She kept going on about what to pay attention to with Eddie, clearly having remembered all his likes and dislikes, as if they had been living together for a long time. I had always been jealous of them growing up together, but it looked like I should have paid more attention to their relationship then.

Eddie had no idea all this was going on because he made an excuse to visit the bathroom, but had snuck into our bedroom instead.

Peanut's head tilted when he saw a stranger enter his mommy and daddy's room, and he followed Eddie upstairs.

Eddie looked mockingly at our wedding picture, and he picked up a marker from the table to doodle on my face. That was when he realized that Peanut had bitten the leg of his pants, which gave him a scare, and a vicious look appeared on his face as he kicked Peanut.

Peanut was a small dog that weighed only about 10 pounds, so the kick sent him flying into the air, and then into the wall before falling to the ground. His limbs twitched and blood dripped from his mouth as he whimpered.

I was furious. I lunged toward Peanut, but I went through his body no matter how hard I tried to touch him.

Eddie's pale and haggard face lit up with wild delight. He laughed mockingly and said, "You're a loyal dog, aren't you? I should send you to your owner's side in heaven!"

I was stunned. Eddie knew that I was dead.

Could Robert be working for him? I recalled how Robert had always treated me with disgust, and he always enjoyed bad-mouthing me. I clenched my fists at the thought.

That was when Sonia walked into the room after hearing the commotion. She immediately saw Peanut twitching at the bottom of the wall.

Eddie immediately pretended to cry and said, "I'm so sorry, Sonia. That dog bit me, and I accidentally kicked it because my heart was hurting. It's my fault for being so careless. Will the dog be okay?"

Sonia pressed her lips together and looked away from Peanut with difficulty. "The most important thing is that you're okay. Are you all right? Where did he bite you? Pets are covered in germs, and that isn't good for the baby. I've been planning to send the dog away, and you've been a big help in getting that done today."

With that, she got Conroy to send Peanut to the vet with a look of disdain.

Eddie looked like he was not happy with the outcome, and he scowled, but he quickly wiped it off his face and tugged at Sonia's sleeve. "It's a relief that the dog is fine. If Henry found out what happened, he would probably skin me alive. I won't be able to make it up to him even if I died."

He made it sound like I had bullied him horribly before, and Sonia looked at him sympathetically while comforting him.

Eddie had lost half his ear, and his face had been slashed until it was unrecognizable. Every piece of flesh on his body was mutilated. He passed out several times, but Sonia woke him up every time with a bucket of cold water.Sonia's expression was cold, and her tone was chilly. "What are you waiting for? Tell me where you hid Henry, or I'll gouge out your eyes next with my blade."Eddie's eyes looked blank, and he had lost focus. He was enveloped by the fear of death. He watched as Sonia gradually approached him, and he broke down, suddenly laughing wildly. "What's the point of pretending to have deep feelings for Henry now, Sonia? Henry is dead! He's been dead a long time. You even stomped on his ashes!"All it took was a few words for the red veins in Sonia's eyes to burst, and she went completely crazy. She lost control of herself as she picked up a blade and stabbed it right into Eddie's throat while screaming, "You're lying! You're lying!"No one knew how much time had passe

The doctor left after comforting her. It was right at that moment when Eddie, who had been waiting for Sonia, looked out the door expectantly and saw Sonia standing in a daze in the corridor. He quickly pulled Sonia into the NICU and cried while pointing at the baby."This is my fault. My mom had no idea that our son is allergic to seafood and fed him a spoonful of fish soup, which caused the rashes."I looked coldly at Eddie. I knew better than anyone what a horrible person he was, and that he must have been involved in causing the baby’s allergic reaction. No parent would ever hurt their child, but Eddie would stoop to anything just to snatch Sonia for himself. The baby had been traveling everywhere for the past few days, and had now been fed an allergic substance. He was too weak to cry and looked particularly pitiful. If this were before, Sonia's heart would have softened and she would start focusing on the baby. However, all Sonia did now was give a nonchalant reply while sc

After he was done talking, Eddie entered the house with the baby as if he lived there. The dog in Conroy's arms suddenly started barking, and Eddie glared maliciously at it before turning to Sonia and saying pitifully, "Did you see that, Sonia?"He thought Sonia would side with him like the last time, but Sonia said calmly, "Let the dog be, Eddie. Maybe it's better that you stopped staying at our house. It would be terrible if the dog bit you or Bobby."Eddie was taken aback, but Sonia did not give him the opportunity to make up an excuse to stay back. She said to the driver, "Take Mr. Moore and the baby home."At this point, Eddie no longer dared to push his luck, and had to leave with an upset look on his face. Sonia glanced at the obedient little dog and reached out to it. The dog looked at her innocently, allowing her to pet it, and just when Sonia's fingertips were about to touch the dog's head, she suddenly pulled back. She pressed her lips together and said, "Thank you fo

Eddie took Sonia's coat, and Sonia snapped out of it. She said through clenched teeth, "All right. I'll head over right now."I looked at her curiously. Did Sonia believe I was really dead without any doubt? Not long after, Sonia arrived at the funeral parlor with the others, and the employee took out an urn for her, saying, "Condolences. This contains Henry Jacobs' ashes."Sonia reached out for it and purposely allowed it to slip from her hands. The urn fell to the ground and was smashed into pieces. My ashes fell out as well, creating a whirlwind of dust in the air. It felt like my heart had been punched when I heard the smash.I could not believe that I still had to suffer humiliation from Sonia even after death. The funeral parlor employee was shocked. "What are you doing?Sonia stepped forward in her high heels, which stomped on my ashes, and she asked the employee with an air of dominance, "Stop the act. How much did Henry Jacobs pay you to do this?"The employee was confu

Eddie started to coax Sonia in a submissive manner. "Don't worry, Sonia. I promise I'll never cross the line with you again. I'll help you look for Henry and explain everything to him. I promise you that he will change his mind and come back to you."He managed to get into Sonia's good graces by taking a step back. Sonia was touched, and she said, "Thank you for this, Eddie. You're not in the best health, yet you're willing to come to such a dangerous place. I'll get a hotel for you and the baby later."It chilled my heart to see them acting like a happy family. Once the baby had enough to eat, they got up to leave. That was when I realized that my corpse on the beach was gone. Eddie must have gotten Robert to destroy it. A strange feeling of desperation filled my heart. Why was I still chained to the mortal world and unable to reincarnate? The next day, Sonia woke up with a jerk in the hotel and shouted, "Henry, don't…!"She sat up in bed, and her yelling woke up the baby next

Robert gulped as he tried to make up an excuse for what she saw. "Yikes. I can't believe Mr. Jacobs would be such a prankster. How can he leave something so valuable lying around?"He was clearly a lousy liar, but Sonia was relieved. She mumbled, "I knew that couldn't be him." She turned around, biting her lip and saying angrily, "Damn it, Henry. How can you leave our wedding ring lying around? Didn't you promise me that you'd never take off the ring?"I smiled bitterly as I lowered my gaze. I did at least keep that promise. When Sonia arrived in front of the wooden house, she started feeling a little hesitant. She took a deep breath before pushing the door open. "I'm here to pick you up, Henry…"Her eyes widened. The house was empty and only had a simple bed and table. There was nowhere for anyone to hide. Most importantly, nothing in the house looked like it had been used. It was like no one had ever stayed there, as everything was covered in dust. This time, Sonia did not wai
