Chapter 4

Author: Fifteen
At 3 p.m., I arrived at Sterling Enterprises with the project documents. I was checking in at reception when I heard laughter from the break room.

Alicia and Ronald came out together, each carrying a coffee.

A coworker called over, "Treating Ronald again, Alicia?"

Ronald grinned. "Hey, she offered. I'm not turning down free coffee."

Alicia smiled along with him until she saw me. I took my visitor badge and walked past them.

The meeting ran for an hour. I stuck to the project, keeping my tone professional. Alicia kept glancing my way, but I gave her no attention beyond what the meeting required.

When we finished, I closed my laptop and left. She caught up as I entered the elevator and stepped in beside me.

"What was that about?"

"I was doing my job."

"You walked right past me and Ronald. You didn't have anything to say?"

I turned to her. "Would asking have gotten me an honest answer?"

She opened her mouth, then closed it.

When the doors opened, she followed me out.

"Chase, the wedding is in two weeks. This is a terrible time to make a scene. Think about what this will do to both of us."

I stopped and faced her. "Is that all you're worried about? How it'll look if we call it off?"

She went quiet, and then her tone softened a little.

"Alright. Maybe Ronald and I have been spending too much time together, but we're coworkers. I can't just shut him out and make things awkward."

By then, her excuses no longer hurt. They only confirmed what I already knew.

"You don't want things to be awkward for him. What about me?

"I couldn't use my own parking space, and you told me to give him a break. I felt like a guest in my own home, and you said I was overthinking it.

"I finally sold the space to be done with the problem, and you bought it behind my back so he could keep using it. Tell me when you've ever taken my side."

She pressed her lips together. For a while, neither of us spoke.

"I'll set some boundaries with him," she finally said. "Let me drive you home tonight. We can sit down and talk."

"Don't bother. There's nothing left to discuss."

I turned and walked away.

After that, she texted me constantly.

[Have you eaten?

[Can we go over our wedding outfits this week?

[The planner needs us to approve the schedule. Do you have time tonight?]

I muted her messages.

The wedding was 14 days away. My overseas assignment started that same day.

I opened my calendar and looked at the date.

Once, I couldn't wait for it to arrive. Now, I was counting the days until I left.

Over the next two weeks, I tied up loose ends and arranged for someone to pick up the documents and belongings still at Alicia's place.

In our group chat, she carried on planning the wedding.

[Chase is swamped with work. Ronald, could you pick out a suit for him?]

Ronald replied almost immediately. [Leave it to me. I know what'll look good on him.]

I nearly left the chat, then changed my mind. I wanted to see how much more of my life they intended to arrange without me.

The night before my flight, Alicia sent another string of messages.

[I'll see you at the venue tomorrow morning.

[I've taken care of everything. Just be there on time.

[Let's put all this behind us, okay? We can still have a good life together if you stop turning everything into an argument.]

I didn't answer.

The next morning, Alicia arrived outside my building in her wedding dress. I was already on my way to the airport.

My phone rang over and over. I let every call go unanswered.

Later, my real estate agent told me she went upstairs and pounded on my door until security intervened. By then, she was kicking it.

The apartment was empty except for a table. On it, I left her a note.

[Alicia, we're done. For good.]

A little later, Alicia sent another message. [If you don't show up today, I'll marry Ronald instead.]

I read it without a flicker of anger.

My parents kept calling. Mom left messages telling me the relatives were all there, waiting.

I didn't respond.

Then came a stream of texts from Alicia, demanding to know what was wrong with me and whether I had lost my mind.

I silenced my phone and looked toward the boarding gate.

When the final boarding call came, I blocked Alicia, switched off my phone, and put it in my bag.

I walked through the gate without looking back.

  • No Room for Me   Chapter 10

Back overseas, I settled into a routine I liked.Work kept regular hours. I had a comfortable apartment and a parking space I could actually use. Every evening, I drove home and pulled into the garage without giving it a second thought. On clear weekends, I took the car out for a drive. When it rained, I stretched out on the couch and put on a movie. Some nights, I had dinner with coworkers. Other days, I drove to a nearby town and checked out the local grocery stores. It wasn't an exciting life, but it suited me. I knew what to expect when I came home. One evening after work, I parked and stayed behind the wheel for a minute. The garage was quiet, its overhead lights casting an even glow on the gray wall ahead.Sitting there, I remembered how often I used to come home and find my space blocked.Ronald's car would be angled across the line, and Alicia would tell me, "Just park outside tonight. Don't give him a hard time."I always gave in. Compromise was part of a relationship,

  • No Room for Me   Chapter 9

A year later, I flew home for a short business trip. The sun was out when I landed, and my driver was waiting by the time I rolled my suitcase out of the terminal. On the ride into town, I watched the familiar streets and buildings pass. The city looked much the same as when I left.Work kept me busy for three days. Once everything was wrapped up, I went to see my parents.Mom stopped short when she opened the door, then reached for my suitcase. "You've lost weight again. Are you eating properly over there?"I brought the suitcase inside. "Work's been busy."Neither of them brought up Alicia over dinner.Mom asked about my apartment, my job, and whether I was making friends. Dad mostly listened, occasionally telling me not to work so late. After dinner, he slid a folder across the table."This is everything Alicia paid you back after the wedding was called off."I opened it and looked through the paperwork. The shared expenses were all itemized, from the wedding planner's fee

  • No Room for Me   Chapter 8

By my second rainy season abroad, I settled into a routine.I kept up with the car maintenance and handled small repairs around the apartment. If something needed more work, I called someone in.When I worked late, I picked up dinner on the way home. On weekends, I drove to a supermarket outside the city and stocked up for the week.I expected living alone to be harder. It turned out that wasn't what wore me down.It was having to make excuses for people who kept pushing my limits when I was already running on empty. That evening, rain hammered the windshield as I waited at a red light. The wipers swept steadily back and forth, and warm air blew from the vents.Sitting there, I remembered that night in the rain back home.I had parked half a mile away and walked home with my work bag slung over my shoulder. My shoes were soaked, and my wet clothes clung to my skin. The whole way, I tried to talk myself out of getting angry. Ronald would apologize. Alicia would say she was cau

  • No Room for Me   Chapter 7

A little over a month after the wedding fell apart, Alicia visited my parents.Mom told me about it after I finished an international conference call. My throat was sore from talking, and I was still going over my notes when she called. She asked if I had eaten, then got to the reason for her call. "Alicia came by today."I stopped writing. "What did she want?""To apologize."According to Mom, Alicia brought several bags of gifts and waited outside their door for a long time. Dad didn't want to let her in, but eventually, he relented.Once inside, she admitted she was wrong to buy my parking space behind my back. She also acknowledged that her relationship with Ronald crossed the line.Mom hesitated before going on. "She said she drank too much on the wedding night. That's how she explained what happened."I gave a short laugh. "Of course she did."Until I left, Alicia never had to face the consequences of her choices. Those always fell to me.She told me not to make a big d

Life abroad turned out to be simpler. Most days, I went from home to work and back, with the occasional stop for groceries. Leaving at 7 a.m. and getting home at 10 p.m. became routine. Some nights, I was too tired to bother turning on the lights. Still, a long day at work was easier to recover from than another evening with Alicia and Ronald.I settled in quickly. There was a convenience store downstairs and a coffee shop around the corner. On weekends, I bought groceries for the week. Everything in the fridge was something I actually wanted to eat.Only my jacket hung by the door, and only my toiletries sat on the bathroom counter. I liked living alone. I could finally come home without finding someone else making himself comfortable at my expense.News from back home still reached me.The wedding video spread fast. At first, plenty of people blamed me for leaving Alicia at the altar and humiliating her family in front of everyone they knew. Then the rest of the story start

  • No Room for Me   Chapter 5

My flight landed just after dawn. A thin fog hung over the airport beneath a pale morning sky.I stood outside the terminal with my suitcase and my phone still off. After days of constant calls and messages, the quiet took some getting used to.I didn't switch it on until that afternoon. Notifications filled the screen before I could open anything. There were dozens of missed calls from my parents. Mutual friends sent screenshots and voice messages faster than the app could load them.At the top of the list was a video from the wedding. I tapped it.Alicia stood at the altar with her veil crooked, her face tight with anger. Beside her, the officiant held his microphone and struggled to keep smiling as whispers spread through the guests.Ronald stood at her side in a light-colored suit. He didn't look like a groomsman waiting for instructions or a guest who stepped up to help. He looked comfortable beside her."Did the groom actually walk out on her?" someone whispered."Wait, i
