Chapter 2

The next morning, South City had a surprise storm, which was a rare occurrence.

At this time, I was supposed to be in the hotel dressing room with my stylist, putting on my wedding tux.

However, I was only wearing a loose old sweater as I packed my things.

My phone suddenly rang.

It was Claudia.

“Edward, I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!”

She sounded a little anxious.

“It’s extremely foggy here in North City. The visibility is less than 200 feet, so all the flights this morning have been delayed.

“I went to the counter to ask, and the earliest flight will only take off at noon.”

I picked up a photo of us and tossed it into the trash can. I did not say a word.

“Edward, did you hear me?”

She took a deep breath and sounded softer.

“I know you must be very anxious right now. Me too! But no one can do anything about the weather conditions.

“How about you call the hotel and ask if we can delay the wedding for a few days?”

I shut my suitcase.

“Claudia.”

“Yes? Just tell me, Edward. I’m listening.”

“I’m still at home. It’s raining very heavily outside. Are you sure you want me to face our hundreds of guests and tell them that the bride is stranded by heavy fog?”

She was silent for a moment.

“Edward, I know it’s difficult for you, but I’m also working hard for our future.”

She sighed. She sounded tired and pitiful.

“Last night, in order to solve the data issue, I didn’t sleep at all. Now, my stomach is hurting too. If it weren’t for the weather, I would crawl my way back to you.

“You’re always very understanding. Can you please help me to hold the fort for a while? After I go back, you can scold me however you like. I’ve also prepared a huge surprise for you.”

Had I not seen the snowy photos taken in Ocean City, I would have felt bad for her when I heard her words.

I would even tell her not to rush and get more rest until she felt better.

“Alright, I’ll do that for you.”

I sounded eerily calm.

She let out an obvious sigh of relief. Then, she immediately cheered up.

“I know you’re the most understanding person.

“Right, since you’re at home, can you do me a small favor?”

She suddenly changed the topic.

“In the second right drawer in my study, there is a paper folder.

“Can you locate that for me and get a delivery service to send it to the address that I’ll be sending you shortly?

“It’s a very important supplementary agreement. The client will need it by noon, so it has to be sent on time.”

I opened the drawer. Indeed, there was a sealed paper folder inside.

“Found it.”

“That’s great!” She was a little agitated. “The delivery services might be delayed due to the heavy rain. If no one picks this up, can you get a cab and personally send it over?

“The location is in the city’s CBD. It’s very nearby. Edward, please help me with this. Once I get my project bonus, I’ll bring you to a beachside honeymoon.”

She was always like that.

She would simply make promises just to make me do whatever troublesome matter she had on hand.

“Alright, I’ll do it.”

I had just ended the call and picked up the paper folder when the string seal loosened.

I was just about to pick it up when its contents fell onto the floor.

It landed with a soft thud.

It was not a supplementary agreement.

Instead, it was a limited-edition vinyl of an indie singer.

On the cover, two VIP concert tickets were attached.

The time was tonight.

The location was in Ocean City.

That singer was Nick’s favorite singer.

A few days ago, he was grumbling in the company’s group chat about the ridiculous concert ticket price due to scalpers. He could not afford it.

It turned out that it was the so-called important project that Claudia spoke about.

It was also the reason why she pushed the wedding date back.

The concert was on the same night.

She had to stay back in Ocean City and accompany Nick to watch the concert. Only then would her so-called business trip be over.

I stuffed both the vinyl and concert tickets back into the folder. Then, I sealed it slowly.

After that, I put on my raincoat and took a black umbrella before walking into the heavy rain.
