Chapter 2

Author: Liora
The next morning, Elena got a call from Tanya Verga, Henry's grandma. Her anxious voice boomed loudly in the room.

"The Leone family needs an heir, Elena! Hurry up and do something about it. Do as I say and make the first move tonight. You must produce an heir by this year. Are we clear?"

Elena quickly tried to lower the volume, but Henry heard Tanya anyway. He stepped out of the bathroom. As he was drying his hair with a towel, he paused and questioned, "Just how desperate are you, Elena?"

She hastily tried to explain, "I'm not—"

Before she could finish speaking, Henry had approached her and pinned her down against the bed. His fingers wandered along her collarbone, then trailed downward...

"You're not? Why are you dressed like that, then? Who did you get all dressed up for?"

Only then did Elena look down and notice what she was wearing. She'd gotten drunk last night and had fallen asleep wearing the black lace lingerie she found.

She looked very tempting in the black lingerie, and from Henry's position, he could see the perfect curves. Gulping, he recalled what his friend had teased him with last night.

"She's freaking hot, Henry. How are you still holding yourself back? If I were you, I would've had my way with her ages ago."

Henry shot backward and looked away, saying, "Don't waste your time. You want a child, right? I've made the arrangements to get that over with."

Elena was stumped. He'd made the arrangements for a child? What did that mean?

Half an hour later, a black Maybach pulled up outside a private hospital.

Once Elena looked through the car window, her expression stiffened.

"Why did you take me to a hospital, Henry?"

Henry didn't bother responding.

Several dozen hospital staff were waiting to greet them. Upon seeing Elena, one of them, a doctor named Eric White, came forward and said politely, "Please change into the hospital gown in preparation for the surgery, Mrs. Leone. We'll be giving you a hormone injection shortly to stimulate ovulation and prepare for the egg retrieval. You might feel a little discomfort."

Brows slightly creased, Elena turned to Henry and asked, "Egg retrieval?"

"For the IVF procedure," Henry replied indifferently. "What? Do you think I'd actually touch you?"

Elena stood frozen. "You… Why are you insisting on having this child?"

He was also planning to divorce her, so why bother having a baby through IVF?

Frowning impatiently, Henry replied, "The child is part of the deal. Do you think I'd want one if not for that?"

His words destroyed all feelings Elena ever had for him. Her heart was stinging with pain, and her voice was icy as she declared, "I refuse."

Sneering, Henry got up and closed in on her like a predator.

"Are you rejecting the procedure because you're still holding out hope that I'll sleep with you?"

Grabbing Elena by the jaw, he said coldly, "Do you think I can't see through your little tricks? I'm not asking for your opinion right now. All that's required of you is to do as you're told."

Henry flung her mercilessly to the side and turned to Eric. He ordered, "Drag her in and begin the procedure at once."

Though Elena fought with all her might, she couldn't get away from the people who were holding her down. The moment the needle pricked her skin, her tears fell.

How could Henry be this cruel?

The sedatives took effect quickly. Her mind turned groggy, and she soon lost consciousness.

When Elena woke up the next morning, Eric immediately came to check on her. "You're awake, Mrs. Leone. Your body had a strong rejection response earlier, but thankfully, your condition has stabilized."

"Where's Henry?"

"He left after his part was done," Eric replied with a stiff smile.

Elena's heart sank. She closed her eyes, reining in the wave of nausea that hit her. Did Henry do it while listening to Irene's voice again?

Eric continued, "I have some good news. The embryo matching was a success."

He opened up a refrigerated case to reveal six test tubes.

"Once you've recovered, we will choose one of the embryos for implantation."

Staring dazedly at the test tubes, Elena clutched the blanket so hard her nails nearly tore through it.

Just as Eric was about to inform Elena about the upcoming procedure, she abruptly sat up.

"Mrs. Leone! Please put it down!" Eric cried out in alarm.

The news made Elena pause in her tracks.Henry was dead?…At the Leone family mausoleum over at the old port district in Eastmore, Elena stood in front of a black granite headstone and stared at the photo of the handsome Henry in a suit. A mix of emotions was displayed on her face. She didn't think that their final meeting six months ago would be the last time she ever saw him. After observing Elena's silent reaction, Gianna, who was standing on the side, murmured, "Would you be upset with me, Elena? The people from Charrington approached me to tell me that Henry had cancer and insisted that he would only undergo treatment if you had his baby."At the time, you said you didn't want to hear about him, so I kept it from you… If you want to blame anyone for what happened, you can blame it on me."Snapping out of her reverie, Elena smiled faintly and said, "Don't overthink it, Mom. It was his business whether or not he wanted to live. It's not my burden to bear."Expression shifti

Over in Etolia, when Elena woke up the next morning, she saw Gianna coming into her room with a complicated expression."What's the matter, Mom?" Elena asked.Gianna hesitated briefly before saying softly, "I received some news from Charrington. It's from Henry, who wants me to pass along a message."Elena froze for a moment before replying indifferently, "I don't want to hear it."Looking closely at Elena, Gianna asked, "Are you sure?"Truth be told, when Gianna first heard about it, she found the entire thing utterly ridiculous.Henry had end-stage cancer, and his doctor suggested treating him with stem cell therapy. Yet, he declared that he refused to undergo treatment unless Elena agreed to have his baby for him.He was essentially using his life to blackmail Elena into coming back to him.At first, Gianna wanted to block the news and keep it from Elena, but after thinking it over, she said, "A life's at stake. Are you sure you don't want to hear what it is?""I already sa

"What did you say?" Henry exclaimed, his expression stiffening.Gulping, Eric steeled himself and revealed everything that happened that day."It's not that I wanted to keep it from you, Mr. Leone. I-I was just following orders…"Henry was in no state to listen to any more of Eric's explanations. He stumbled backward in shock.Had Elena already decided to leave him then?Left with no other options, Henry went straight to the Gallo estate and waited outside for three whole days and nights without getting any sleep. At last, he managed to see Elena on the day she and the Gallos were flying back to Etolia.Gianna's immediate reaction was to get the bodyguards to chase Henry off, but Elena stopped her, saying, "I'll handle this."She walked up to the scruffy, red-eyed Henry."Elena… Let's stop fighting, okay? I admit that I was wrong. I'll treat you well from now on. Please don't go."After mulling it over for the last few days, Henry could only come up with one reason for Elena'

Irene abruptly stopped crying. It was Elena who charged up the mountain to save Henry. While Elena was unconscious, Irene had seized the chance to claim all the credit for herself. She never bothered finding out what actually happened up on the mountain. All she knew was that the doctor said some of Henry's injuries came from a fall. Based on that, she deduced that he had been rescued after falling off a cliff."I … misspoke," she said, flustered.Narrowing his eyes, Henry asked, "Tell me then, what wild beast did we encounter that night?"Irene had her heart in her mouth as she replied, "I-I didn't see any wild beasts…"Henry's gaze turned cold. Even though he'd been unconscious through most of it, he distinctly recalled hearing the roars of a bear and the sound of gunshots. At the time, he'd been so moved by the fact that Irene had saved his life that he didn't think about these things. Now that he had given it more thought, he knew that, with how cowardly Irene was, she wo

Everyone present froze in shock. It was Irene who first snapped out of it. "Elena's adoptive parents… are the Gallos?"Gianna looked over sharply and retorted, "Who are you calling her adoptive parents? In our eyes, Elena is the Gallo family's biological daughter."Henry's friends immediately paled as they recalled all the ways they used to mock Elena for being poor and lacking in etiquette."Um… Elena… About the things we used to say, we were just being dumb and saying stupid things! Please don't take it to heart.""Yes, that's right! We were just young and dumb back then. We didn't mean any of it!"They put on their most appeasing smiles and tried to suck up to Elena, but before she said anything, Gianna spoke up first."All actions have consequences. Everyone has to pay the price for messing up."Immediately, the atmosphere turned tense. After sweeping her gaze across those men, Gianna said mercilessly, "You lot will need to come to us and give a proper apology.
