Ryan’s POV

“I have nothing to hide!” James shouted insistently.

He was clearly on edge, desperately trying to hide his anxiety, but his nervous ticks and sweaty forehead gave him away.

“Is that so? Then you wouldn’t mind me sharing this information with Julie, or the authorities, when we open up our investigation.” I said. “There’s a missing five figure necklace that needs to be found, after all.”

He sounded like he'd run a marathon when he asked, “Why would you point them my way? I told you, I’m innocent!”

My demeanor flipped, and in the next heartbeat I was leaning forward, face stoney.

“Because I’ve spoken to the debt collectors who are after you, James. I know how desperate your situation is and how simple it would have been for you to swap the necklaces.” I said, voice hard. “Come clean before this blows up in your face.”

His eyes were wide as saucers.

“You have no proof I took the necklace! If you keep harassing me, I’ll c-call…” his words fizzled into a gasp for air.

Celeste’s POVVanessa flashed a triumphant smile that ignited my anger.“I’m sorry, sweetie, I didn’t hear that. You want to stay with us?” she asked, tucking a chestnut brown lock of hair behind her ear. There she went, rubbing in the success of her subtle manipulation. My gaze bore into her with an icy fierceness as a surge of anger built in my chest.I’ve never hated anyone as much as I hated my ex-best friend.Bonnie cleared her throat, speaking a little louder. “I said I want to stay here a little longer. I’ll visit Mommy another time.”“You made the right choice, princess.” Damien said, wrapping an arm around Vanessa’s waist. “Us and your new sibling are your real family.”It was times like these that I wished I wasn’t the bigger person and could slap the shit out of him. I needed to hunt down the best divorce lawyer money could buy, even if it meant taking out another loan. I just couldn’t stand by and watch Bonnie’s spark erode away. She was only six–it wasn’t too late to undo

Celeste’s POV“Stalker!” Vanessa screeched, lunging for my phone. “Delete that right now or I’ll sue you for recording me without my consent!”I stepped back, protecting the phone against my chest. There wasn’t a chance in hell I’d delete such crucial evidence of her verbal and emotional abuse towards my daughter.Vanessa’s eyes blew wide in shock as she tottered in her high heels. Instinctively, I reached out to steady her, but her face morphed into a devious smirk for a split second before she flung herself to the ground. “How could you push me?” She cried out, clutching her stomach tearfully.I rolled my eyes. “No one’s going to buy your pitiful act–”Damien shoved past me to get to Vanessa, roughly knocking the air out of my lungs. His thick arms bulged as he lifted her off the ground and supported her with an arm around her shoulders.“Are you crazy? She’s pregnant for god’s sake!” he roared with barely contained rage. Was he angry because he cared about Vanessa and their child,

Celeste’s POV“Your mother doesn’t want to be part of our family, Bon-Bon.” Damien picked up his box and glared at me pointedly. “She only cares about her career and younger boyfriend, so why would she help with your sibling’s party?”Bonnie’s bright smile fell. She clutched the hem of her white dress, scuffing her little wedge heels in the grass. My poor baby had suffered enough disappointment. Regardless of how much I disapproved of Damien and his choice of stepmother, Bonnie was so excited for this party. I wouldn’t fight with him and dampen her spirits.“Come on, honey.” I said, taking her hand and heading for the table strewn with pastel pink and blue balloons and ribbons. “Mommy will help you with these.”Bonnie skipped energetically beside me.“Thank you, Mommy! You’re the best at making parties look pretty!” she squealed.A soft smile flitted to my lips. She had noticed all of my effort after all.“Bonnie, see if you can find another pump so we can blow up these balloons toget

Celeste’s POVFear gripped me as I turned around to come face to face with Damien. He carried a box laden with party supplies and was dressed from head to toe in white, topped off with a smug grin. “I’m happy to see you’ve reconsidered my offer from this morning,” he preened, placing the box on his immaculate lawn.My eyes were fixed on his face as I discreetly slipped my phone into my back pocket. I didn’t know how he’d react if he found out I’d been secretly recording.Damien took my silence as confirmation and stepped closer.“You’ve finally come to your senses, haven’t you, sweet cheeks?” he murmured, caressing my face. “I’ve been so worried about you. Look at how thin you’ve become.”Repulsion rolled my stomach as he snaked a hand around my waist, guiding me towards the house.“I’m so glad you changed your mind, Celeste. Who cares if your career crashed and burned? You’ll find that being my mistress comes with financial security, the pleasure of my company, and many other perks.”

Celeste’s POV“Please, stop the car.” Ryan said, the friendliness slipping from his voice. “You can spend your Saturday with your ex husband by yourself.”I glanced at his clenched jaw and furrowed brows. Was he getting hangry?“I won’t be long. We can pick up something for breakfast afterwards and eat at the studio.” I said, taking a turn.“Please, just let me out here, Celeste.” He said, not even looking my way. “I’ll continue investigating Julie’s tampered order.”Everything about this felt wrong.I pulled off to the side of a quiet suburban street and switched on my hazard lights. Turning in my seat, I studied his face as he unbuckled.“Ryan, what’s the matter? I swear I won’t be more than ten minutes at Damien’s house.”That’s when I saw it, a flash of jealousy across his face when I said my ex husband’s name. It was glaringly obvious.Ryan, jealous of Damien? It made no sense.“I’m just concerned about how Vanessa is treating Bonnie. She was pretending to be overly kind at pickup
