Ryan’s POV

“You’ve met my parents–they’d never accept me for who I am,” Michelle cried, voice hoarse. “So please, Ryan, don’t take this chance from me.”

It hurt to see my friend in so much pain.

She was right about Lisa and Robert Hughes, though. Each interaction with them was steeped in a sexist, outdated worldview–so of course homophobia was part of the package.

“I understand your parents will have trouble accepting your truth, but going to this extreme to hide–”

“I’ve been open with Katie about our fake relationship from the start, and she’s accepted it. What if Celeste would too?” There was a desperation in her eyes. “The only way for us both to be happy is to keep pretending.”

“That’s no way to live.” I shook my head firmly. “But I’ll support you, Michelle. We can find another way t–”

Her eyebrows knitted together with tension, and she cut me off, voice raised.

Ryan’s POV“Ryan, I must confess,” Michelle said smoothly as she stepped into my apartment. “I’m dreadfully jealous of you at the moment.”I cocked an eyebrow as I closed the door.“Of my penthouse? We both know your family can afford better.”“No,” she said, handing me a small potted plant. “Your father’s loose reins. My parents would never let me move out–it’s improper for an unmarried woman to live on their own, as they say.”She spoke without feeling, like she was reciting tomorrow’s weather report.“My father’s reins aren’t as loose as you think.” I said, guiding her to the kitchen and placing the succulent on the counter. “Something to drink?”“I’d love some tea, thank you,” she said, sitting on a bar stool. My jaw was tight as I put the espresso capsule away.Reaching for coffee was instinctual–my beautiful caffeine addict had ingrained herself in everything I did.I made the tea, placed it in front of Michelle and leaned on the island. There was no point in drawing this out any

Vanessa’s POVPower and elegance. That was the message the sleek facade of Crown Luxe’s head office conveyed perfectly. I strutted through the revolving doors, smiling brightly. My new work environment suited my taste well.“Vanessa Abrams?” A woman stood from an armchair in the reception area and gave me a stiff smile. “Most new hires strive for punctuality on their first day. It’s a trait a Head of Design Team should have, wouldn’t you agree?”I suppressed an eye roll as I walked up to her.Who was this bitch anyway? I was literally only twenty minutes late, and she was already railing me. “Please forgive my tardiness. The morning sickness was especially bad today.” I glanced at her midsection before giving her sickly sweet smile. “I’m sure you can relate.”Her eyes widened a fraction before she smoothed her face into a stone mask.“Oh, are you not pregnant?” I gasped with feigned surprise, squinting at her face. Her skin was annoyingly flawless for someone pushing forty. “How insen

Celeste’s POV“Everything alright with you and Ryan?” Grace asked from the doorway.I ended my call with Damien and sighed.“I really don’t know.” I tapped my phone against my chin. “I think that was his misguided attempt at looking out for me. Or maybe he just hates Damien–I mean, who could blame him?”She snorted. “No one. Ever.”But then she stepped into the room and chewed her lip, clearly anxious.“What’s bothering you, Grace?” “You need to get him under control, love. We can’t have an assistant running around the studio, barking out orders. Things are different now.” She tried to lessen the blow with a thin smile. “It’s frankly unprofessional, Celeste.”The criticism hit hard. It was valid, but that didn’t stop the sting to my pride.“You’re a CEO, Ryan’s an assistant–you need to keep that hierarchy in mind, okay?” She said, squeezing my arm once before leaving her office.I stood alone, gripping my phone.Day one with our new hires and I was already getting a talking to from

Ryan’s POV“Interrupting our dinners, crying over Bonnie, and now this smear campaign that only he can resolve? Can’t you see that Damien’s doing everything he can to keep you in his clutches?” I clenched my fists to stop myself from reaching out to hold Celeste’s face and force her to look me in the eye. She had to know what my words meant, even if I couldn’t say them. But she just folded her arms over her chest.“I can see it plain as day.” She said with that stubborn tilt of her chin.I took a step back like I’d been shot. She couldn’t mean…“If you can see his manipulation, why do you still give him the time of day?” I asked, searching her face for some kind of window into her mind. “Don’t tell me that’s what you want, Celeste.”I waited, desperate for her to say Damien was the last thing she wanted. I needed to know that once I’d placated my father, worked my way out of this fake relationship with Michelle, that it wouldn’t be too late. That she wouldn’t be back in that scoundr

Celeste’s POV“Celeste, none of this is true.” Ryan shook his head. “You’re kind, dedicated and loyal. Not the monster they’re painting you to be.” He said it with such certainty, I almost believed him.“I abandoned Bonnie and put all my energy into designing.” I said with a shrug. “Denying it would make me a liar too.”Grace interjected. “They’re saying you emotionally abused her. That you caused her mental breakdown.”My mouth fell open.I had always treated my daughter with love and respect.“If anyone’s to blame for her mental state, it’s Damien and Vanessa.” Ryan tilted my head to face him. “You didn’t abandon Bonnie. You tried your damndest with her until it became clear your efforts were in vain.” His voice rose, eyes fierce with passion. “Do you think you deserve to have your career ruined over this? Because I sure as hell don’t.”Grace nodded in agreement. “Ryan’s right, love. Just look at some of these comments.”She read from Jenny’s phone. “Your kids should always come b
