A quick, impatient beep of the horn cut through her thoughts, snapping her back to the present.

“Do you enjoy standing there?”

Biting back the caustic retort that had sprung to her lips, she said evenly, “I appear to have locked myself out. I don’t suppose you’ve got anything in the car I could force the door with?”

She swung the torch in the direction of his face as she spoke and saw him flinch as the bright light caught his eyes. “Sorry.” She lowered it immediately, but the brief glimpse had been enough, dark hair, sharp jaw, olive skin.

He sat quietly for a moment, then said, “You want me to commit a crime? Breaking down a stranger’s door?” There was a hint of laughter in his voice. Nora had to take a deep breath before she could say sweetly, “I mean, yeah? Can you help?” She was shivering from head to foot and this clown found the situation funny.

The absolute nerve of him.

“You’re cold.”

She hoped it was her shaking he had noticed and not the way her nipples were standing out like she had just got fresh piercings. “A bit,” she said steadily. “Which is why I’d like to get back inside as soon as possible.”

The engine cut out. The driver’s door swung open and he stepped out. Before she could say anything a heavy jacket was being held out toward her.

“Here, put this on,” he said easily.

Glancing down at Lilly, who had begun to silently hiss at him, Nora did not bother to stop her. In fact she felt this was a good turn of events. The man was tall, very tall, and intimidatingly broad-shouldered, and she was feeling distinctly nervous being so scantily clad.

The stranger crouched down to Lilly’s level and offered a hand for the cat to sniff. There was a brief pause. And Lilly turned, went back to sit at the gate like nothing happened. Nora wondered, not for the first time, whether getting a cat had ever really been the right decision.

“Pretty cat.” The man stood, returned with a powerful torch and switched it on. “Why are you standing there gawking? Put the coat on.”

Nora didn’t see any point in arguing. If he was going to hit her over the head with something and have his wicked way with her, it might as well be the torch as anything else. Clearly Lilly was not the right pet for this kind of situation.

He pushed past her and walked to the cottage door as she slipped the jacket on. It drowned her, but right at this moment that was very welcome. She followed and watched as he tried the door, then walked the full perimeter of the building. When he re-emerged she said testily, “Any luck?”

“Why didn’t you have the key with you?”

She murmured, “ Skipped my mind and forgot it.”

He didn’t comment on this. What he did say was, “What’s that terrible smell? Raw sewage?”

“I slipped over there,” she said, pointing at the trench. “There was a trench with animal dung in it.”

He made no attempt to hide his amusement, chuckling deeply. “Mmm. I see.”

She wasn’t about to stand in the cold discussing how she smelled. “So, can you get me in? It’s freezing out here.”

“Probably, but I don’t intend to. There’s no point causing damage when you can contact the agent in the morning. This place is listed through Siam Stays, isn’t it? I know Somchai — I’ll call him myself. You’ll be back in, in no time.”

She didn’t want to be back in by morning, she wanted to be back in now. “But — I lit a candle. I can’t leave it.”

“You already have,” he pointed out silkily. “The house is automated to suppress anything producing smoke when left unattended, so it’s probably dying out already.”

How did he even know the house could do that.

“If you know Somchai, can’t you phone him now?”

He turned and rolled his eyes. “Did your phone work out here, ma’am?”

Nora looked down at the phone she’d been clutching tightly.

“I suggest you come back to my place, get a good night’s sleep, and we’ll sort it in the morning.”

This was absolutely ridiculous. “I couldn’t possibly go home with you, Mr…?”

“Reeves. Arlo Reeves,” he said, his pearly whites shining in the dark. “And why couldn’t you come home with me, Miss…?”

“My name is Nora,” she said tightly, “and I’m not in the habit of accepting overnight accommodation with complete strangers.” She refused to acknowledge Lilly, who had already planted herself at his feet.

Traitor.

“We’re not strangers, we’ve introduced ourselves,” he said, amusement back tenfold. “And rest assured I’m not so desperate for female company that I’ve seized on your unfortunate predicament with pillage in mind. It’s a genuine offer. You’ll sleep alone.” He paused. “Especially in view of that unusual scent you’re wearing.” He put his hands halfway up his face while staring her down.

Swine.

Dignity was hellishly difficult given the smell, but Nora made a stab at it. “Thank you for the offer, but I couldn’t, Mr Reeves.”

“Okay.” He turned, beginning to walk back toward his car.

“Where are you going?”

She knew the panic had crept into her voice and couldn’t quite stop it. He wasn’t going to just leave her here, was he?

“Home.” He didn’t bother to turn around. “It’s late, I’m hungry and tired. You can come with me or stay here — it’s up to you.”

She didn’t move until he had actually seated himself in the car. She still couldn’t quite believe he was going to drive off.

  • Nora and Her Unexpected Billionaire    Ben and Maya

Maya sat alone at a corner table inside a small pizza shop. Her fingers idly traced the condensation on her glass of water as she stared out the window at the passing crowd. She reached into her purse, pulling out her phone. She hesitated, thinking about calling Nora to find out if she was still wrapped up with Arlo. The suffocating pressure in her chest became a bit too much, and a quiet sniff broke from her nose as she fought down a sudden urge to sob right there. Before she could make up her mind about the call, her phone rang from an unknown number. Maya quickly wiped back the tears, clearing her throat.“Hello?”“Maya? Hey, it's Ben,” his voice, casual and easy. “Sorry for calling you out of the blue. But you forgot your sunglasses in Arlo’s car the other night, and I wanted to return them to you.”“Oh... wow. I didn't notice they were missing. Look, it’s fine, Ben. We can just meet up some other time.”“Hey, what other time is there?” Ben joked. “I’m driving through Lower Manhat

The underground garage was dead silent as the engine of Arlo's car idled. He leaned back and listened as his handler spoke through the speakers.“Tell me everything,” Arlo commanded flatly, his rough baritone echoing in the car.“Technically, JJ is still missing,” his handler said.Arlo's expression tightened. “What do you mean?”“While tracking him, we discovered that he had shown up at his office. Unfortunately, our men didn't make it there in time. By the time they arrived, he was already gone,” the handler explained, his voice tight.“We found traces of blood in his office. I believe he was kidnapped,” he continued. “What's even weirder is that his family is missing too, which made me believe it's the same people that took him who also took his family.”Arlo's eyes narrowed in the dark car. “Okay... but who are they? And why?”“I don't really know how to say this, Mr. Reeves,” the handler muttered, a heavy pause coming over the line. “But my guys saw some very familiar faces hangi

Arlo immediately pressed the dial button, calling Nora. The line picked, but Nora didn't say a single word. The quiet breathing on the other end was suffocating.“Hi,” she finally spoke.“You know nothing happened, right?” he said. “Ignore the picture. I knew something was suspicious the moment she appeared from nowhere.”“So you knew she was there?”“I saw her.”“And then she just happened to fall on you?”“She actually injured her ankle.”“You know,” she said eventually, “technically we aren't official yet. It’s probably why she thinks she still has a chance.”Arlo’s brow furrowed, his car pulling up to the curb to park. “What exactly does that mean?”Nora pressed her lips together, trying to keep her amusement out of her voice. “You haven't officially asked me out yet.”A long, heavy silence stretched over the speaker before Nora finally spoke up again. “We just sort of started doing this and went along. I told your mother too. She wasn’t happy and said I should talk to you about i

The afternoon sun hung high over the private sports club, casting a warm glow across the large outdoor basketball court where Arlo and Ben had been playing for an hour.“You’re cheating,” Ben complained, catching the ball after it bounced away from him. “There’s no way you move that fast.”Arlo wiped the back of his hand across his forehead. “You’re just getting slower.”“I’m thirty-three, not eighty.”“Could have fooled me.”Ben gave him an offended look before tossing the ball toward him again.Arlo caught it easily, but before he could return the shot, his phone began ringing from the bench nearby. He walked over and picked it up.It was his mother.“Hi, Mom.”“Arlo, I wanted to let you know that dinner with Ben’s father has been scheduled for next Friday.”“Next Friday?”“Yes. Your father wants everyone there, and it’s important that you clear your schedule for the day. I don’t want you making plans that could interfere with it.”Arlo glanced toward Ben, who was drinking from his

  • Nora and Her Unexpected Billionaire    Arlo’s apartment

The morning light cut softly through the floor-to-ceiling glass of the penthouse, waking Nora up into a quiet haze. For a second, she just stared at the high ceiling, completely confused about where she was until the layout of the room clicked.Arlo’s apartment. Then she felt a heavy, warm weight pressing right against her middle.Nora reached down, peeling back the thick white duvet, and her face went hot. Arlo was buried under her oversized shirt, his arms wrapped around her waist as he snuggled against her. Since she only had the shirt on, the sudden sight made her flustered. She calmly tapped his shoulder a few times."Arlo. Wake up.""Arlo?"He didn't move. She reached down and calmly tapped his shoulder."Arlo."He stirred.Instead of pulling his head out from under the fabric, Arlo just shifted closer. He pressed a warm kiss directly to her stomach, his teeth biting her skin softly."Arlo!"Nora looked down through the wide collar hole of her shirt."Are you going to stay under

  • Nora and Her Unexpected Billionaire    Bad birthday

Arlo sat on the balcony with his legs stretched out in front of him, one hand resting loosely around the glass on the small table beside his chair. The night air was cool against his skin, carrying the distant sounds of Manhattan up between the towers. From the balcony, the city looked almost peaceful. Traffic moved in slow streams several floors below, headlights slipping between buildings while the windows of neighboring apartments glowed warmly against the darkness.Behind him, the penthouse had settled into a quieter rhythm.Nora was in the bathroom, taking off her makeup after the long day. She had left the bedroom door open, and Arlo could occasionally hear the soft clatter of bottles and the running water from where she was washing her face.He glanced toward the glass doors when he heard her humming quietly to herself.A small smile touched his mouth. Then his phone began vibrating against the table. He answered.
