It hovered on the tip of his tongue to tell her what he was thinking, but he realized it was too quick. She’d probably freak out and maybe even run away. She was sure to be frightened by his sudden conviction that she was the one for him. It was better to let her ease into the idea and get more acclimated to dating him before he started talking about forever.

Their food arrived, piled high, and Claire ate with gusto initially. Suddenly, she stopped eating and dropped her fork. Then she looked down. He thought for a minute she was just getting more room to continue eating, but when she didn’t resume, he asked, “What’s wrong?”

She shook her head. “I guess I’m not very hungry.”
