“Sit up straighter,” Zipper said, pacing the hotel room like he owned it. “The jury’s gonna read every slump like a confession.”

Naya tugged at the blouse he’d picked out for her that morning. The fabric was stiff, too crisp. She muttered, “It’s not a crime to be tired.”

“It is if you’re you,” he shot back, circling the chair she sat in. “Now. They’ll ask why you signed those financial forms. What do you say?”

She exhaled hard. “Because Daniel shoved them at me after coming home late. I’d been scrubbing floors and cooking all day. I didn’t even look. I just signed.”

“Wrong.” Zipper snapped his fingers. “You don’t say scrubbing floors. You say you were managing the household. Sounds stronger.”

Her shoulders sagged. “You’re twisting words.”

“I’m surviving with words,” he corrected. “There’s a difference. Again.”

She clenched her jaw. “I signed them because I was exhausted, and I trusted him. Is that good enough for you?”

Zipper leaned down, his hands braced on either side of her chair.

The knock on the door was soft, almost hesitant.Naya frowned, setting down the chipped mug of tea Zipper had left for her earlier. She wasn’t expecting anyone he was the only one allowed in and out of the guest house without clearance. She opened the door and froze.“Daniel.”He smiled the same polished smile she used to fall for, the one that looked effortless but cost her everything. His suit was sharp, his cologne familiar. He leaned on the frame like he belonged there.“Can I come in?” he asked. Her throat tightened. “You’re not supposed to be here.”“I know.” He glanced over his shoulder, then back at her. “Two minutes. That’s all I want. Just to check on you.”Naya almost slammed the door. Almost. Instead, she stepped aside, stiff and unwilling, and he walked in as if he still had rights to the space. The guest house felt smaller instantly.“Nice setup,” he said, looking around. “Better than the ward, I imagine.”“Say what you came to say,” she muttered.Daniel turned to her,

“You brought me here for what?” Naya asked, crossing her arms as she stood in the dim little office above a coffee shop. The place smelled of burnt espresso and dust, and the blinds were half-closed like it was hiding from daylight.Zipper was leaning against the doorframe, hands shoved into his pockets. “Patience. You’ll see.”She gave him a narrow look. “I hate it when you say that.”“You’ll live.”Before she could snap back, the door at the far end opened and a man walked in. He was older, maybe late forties, tall but a little stooped, with sharp eyes that scanned her like he was filing away every detail. His jacket was wrinkled, his tie crooked, but his step was steady.“This her?” he asked Zipper.“Yeah. Naya, meet Reed. Reed, meet trouble,” Zipper said, tipping his chin toward her.“Charmed,” Reed muttered, setting a thick folder on the table.Naya frowned. “Who exactly are you?”“Private investigator,” Reed answered flatly. “Been following Adrian and Daniel for months.”Her st

“You always ruin everything!”Naya froze mid-step. Adrian’s voice, sharp and too close, echoed down the hallway. She pressed her back against the wall, heart thumping.Chloe’s reply came just as sharp. “Don’t put this on me. You’re the one who cracked first. You looked like an amateur in there.”“I didn’t crack.” Adrian’s shoes scraped against the floor, pacing maybe. “You contradicted yourself twice. Twice, Chloe. Do you have any idea how bad that looked?”“I wouldn’t have if you’d done your part,” she shot back. “You promised me Daniel would never doubt me. But I can feel it—he’s looking at me different. And that’s your fault.”Naya leaned closer to the corner, hardly breathing. Her palms were clammy.Adrian lowered his voice, but the words still carried. “We’re this close. All we need is for her to break down once more on the stand. If you can’t hold your story together—”“You don’t get to lecture me,” Chloe hissed. “You’re not the one pretending to be pregnant every day. You think

“The court will reconvene tomorrow morning for the ruling.”The judge’s gavel hit the desk, sharp and final. The sound bounced in Naya’s chest like a hammer. She sat frozen at the defense table, her hands gripping the wood so tight her knuckles burned.Tomorrow. One more night. Then she would either walk free or be buried.Zipper leaned over, calm as always. “Stand up, princess. Show them you’ve got spine.”Her knees felt like paper, but she forced herself to rise, chin lifted. Cameras clicked from the back of the room, reporters shouting questions as the bailiff moved to block them.“Come on,” Zipper said under his breath, guiding her toward a side door. The moment the door shut behind them, the courthouse noise vanished, leaving a quiet hallway. Zipper pushed open a small side room—just a table, some chairs, and a buzzing light above. He shut the door with his foot.Naya dropped into a chair, burying her face in her hands. “Tomorrow. They’re dragging this out to tomorrow.”“Better t

Naya's Pov“I don’t even know how you sleep at night.”The voice stopped Naya mid-step, halfway down the hall that led to the women’s bathroom. She froze, her hand tightening around the strap of her purse. She didn’t have to turn, she already knew it.Daniel.Slowly, she looked over her shoulder. He stood leaning against the wall like he owned the place, his suit sharp, tie loosened just enough to look casual. His dark hair was still perfect, his jaw tight. He looked the same as always, like it was a tiring activity. And somehow that hurt more than anything.“What do you want?” Naya asked, her voice flat.Daniel pushed off the wall, stepping closer. “Just to talk. You’ve been telling stories up there, painting me as some monster. Thought I should remind you of the truth.”She lifted her chin. “The truth is what I told them. You ignored me for a year. You left me alone in that house while you were God knows where. And your mother treated me like I was dirt.”He smirked. “You think any

  • Not His Wife Anymore   Chapter 61 – Chloe’s Mask Slips

Chloe' PovChloe had dressed carefully that morning, even more than usual. The ivory silk dress hugged her tall frame just enough to look elegant but not too revealing for court. Her blonde hair was pinned in soft waves over one shoulder, pearls at her ears, and her makeup precise, warm blush, a faint gloss to make her lips look fuller. She wanted sympathy. She wanted to look like the picture of grace.Daniel walked beside her into the courthouse. Broad shoulders filling his tailored navy suit, his dark hair trimmed neat, face freshly shaven. He looked sharp, controlled. The perfect businessman. But Chloe knew better. His jaw was tight, his hand flexing at his side as they entered the courtroom. He hated losing control of the narrative. And today, Adrian had slipped. The whispers had spread fast: forged papers, forged signatures, Adrian stammering for the first time in years. Chloe had seen Daniel’s knuckles go white around his pen as the evidence came up. He hadn’t said a word to he
