Finley

Today’s council meeting runs late into the evening. By the time it's over, my head pounds with the effort of maintaining a calm, confident facade while fielding thinly veiled questions about my "complicated personal situation."

Bradley is the only council member who doesn't skirt around the issue, instead addressing it directly.

"With all due respect to the more orthodox members of this council," he says, his voice carrying across the room, "two Alpha bloodlines choosing the same mate speaks to strength, not weakness. Our pack would benefit from such powerful connections, regardless of the... personal complications."

I should be grateful for his support, but something about the calculating look in his eyes makes me uneasy. It feels less like he's supporting me and more like he's positioning himself favorably for whatever comes next.

Now, as I make my way back to my cabin, all I want is a hot shower and sleep—preferably dreamless. Nova is still unsettled, whining and pacing benea

Finley"I'm going back to Mountain Ridge tomorrow," Dane continues. And I let him, despite his time being up minutes ago. "To speak with my father. To end the arrangement with Silver Creek formally."My heart skips despite my best efforts to remain unmoved. "Your father won't accept that easily.""No," he agrees. "He won't. There will be consequences. For me. For Mountain Ridge. Possibly for Forest Trails too.""Yet you're willing to face them?" I can't keep the skepticism from my voice. "Just like that?""Not 'just like that.'" He reaches for me, his hand hovering near my face without touching, waiting for permission I'm not ready to give. "I've spent the last two days fighting what I know is right. Fighting what the Moon Goddess clearly wants. Fighting what I want.""And what is it you want?" I ask, hating how vulnerable the question makes me feel. His eyes darken, pupils expanding as Summit rises closer to the surface. "You. Us. Whatever that looks like. However complicated it might

Dane The Mountain Ridge compound rises from the mist as I approach, its stone walls and watchtowers as imposing as they were when I left. Home. Though it feels less like a sanctuary and more like a battlefield today.Summit stirs restlessly as we pass through the main gates, guards snapping to attention as they recognize me. Three hours of driving with my wolf pacing anxiously beneath my skin has left me raw, on edge. Every mile that separated me from Finley was physical torture, the mate bond pulling me back toward Forest Trails with increasing urgency. But this needs to be done. I made her a promise, and I intend to keep it."Alpha Parker is expecting you in his study," the head guard informs me, his expression carefully neutral. News travels fast in wolf packs. No doubt everyone knows what happened at Forest Trails by now.I nod my acknowledgment and head toward the main house—a sprawling stone structure that looms over the rest of the compound. The building has stood for over a ce

Dane "You knew this when you arranged the match with Aria," I realize the truth even as I fling the accusation at my father. His scheming truly knows no bounds, though I’m not sure why I'm surprised. "It was never just about territory or numbers.""I built all of this for you," he says, gesturing to the window, to the pack lands beyond. "Everything I've done—every alliance, every negotiation, every sacrifice—was to ensure you would be the most powerful Alpha our kind has ever known."The weight of his ambition presses down on me like a physical force. "And if I choose differently?"His face hardens. "Then you choose to throw away everything our family has built for generations. You choose to weaken Mountain Ridge rather than strengthen it.""That's not fair.""Leadership rarely is." He returns to his desk, pulling out a formal document. "Silver Creek has already signed the mating agreement. The official announcement is scheduled for next week's full moon gathering."The timing couldn'

FinleyThe moon is nearly full tonight. I can feel it pulling at Nova, making her restless beneath my skin as I stack supplies in my cabin. Water bottles. Protein bars. Enough food to last several days without needing to leave.Preparations I've made alone for the past two years."You really think he's coming back?" Tara asks from my small kitchen where she's helping organize the provisions. She's the only one I've trusted with the full story—both Liam's rejection and Dane's promise."I don't know." I try to keep my voice neutral, but Nova whines at the doubt. My body is already beginning to betray me, skin flushed and overly sensitive as the pre-heat symptoms build. "He said he would.""Men say a lot of things." She gives me a pointed look. "Especially when they want something."I can't argue with that. "This is different. The mate bond—""Didn't stop Stone from walking away." She softens her tone at my flinch. "Sorry. I just don't want to see you hurt again.""Neither do I." I close

FinleyNova urges me forward, desperate for her mate, for the completion of the bond only a shared heat can bring. But I need to be sure first."Did you end things with Aria?" I ask, watching his face carefully.Something flickers in his eyes—so brief I almost miss it—before his expression settles into certainty. "Yes. It's done. Completely."Relief floods through me, alongside something dangerously close to happiness. "Your father can't have taken that well."His jaw tightens slightly. "No. But I made my choice." He reaches for me, his fingers brushing my cheek with surprising gentleness. "I chose you."The touch sends sparks across my sensitized skin, making Nova whine with need. But there's still one more thing I need to know."Why did you choose me? You barely know me."His hand cups my face fully now, his touch burning against my feverish skin. "I know enough. I know the mate bond doesn't lie. I know you're worth fighting for."It's the right answer. Perhaps too right, too perfect

LiamI shouldn't be here.Every step toward Finley's cabin is a violation of the distance I insisted on two years ago. Every breath I take, scenting the air for her, contradicts everything I've told myself, told Ryleigh, about my feelings. But I can't stay away. Not tonight.Storm has been uncontrollable since dawn, pacing and whining, pushing against my control with a ferocity I've never experienced. It took hours to realize why, to recognize the significance of the full moon hanging heavy in the sky.Finley's heat. The thought alone makes my body respond, blood rushing south as Storm howls, desperate to find our mate. Two years of absence haven't weakened the bond enough to mask this primal signal. Two years of pretending she doesn't matter haven't protected me from this moment.I pause at the edge of the clearing, her cabin visible through the trees. Lights burn in the windows, curtains drawn. Is she alone in there, suffering through the beginning stages of a heat without her mate?

Liam Storm nearly takes over completely at the sight of his mate, at the rich scent of her approaching heat. It takes everything I have to maintain control, to not rush to her side, claim what my wolf still believes is ours."Dane?" Her voice carries across the clearing, a note of uncertainty mixed with increasing need. Then her gaze finds me, and her expression hardens. "Liam. What are you doing here?"I move toward the cabin, unable to stop myself. "Finley, we need to talk. About Parker. About the arrangement with Silver Creek—""There is no arrangement," Parker interrupts smoothly. "Not anymore."The lie slides easily from his lips, and I see Finley believe it, relief softening her expression. Storm howls in frustration, in rage at the deception."You need to leave," she tells me, wrapping her arms around herself as if cold, though I can feel the heat radiating from her from yards away. "Now.""Fin, please," I step closer, close enough to see how her pupils have expanded, how she t

Dane asks, his voice rough with restraint as he keeps a careful distance between us.I'm not alright. My skin feels too tight, too hot, every nerve ending hyperaware and desperate for his touch. Nova paces frantically beneath my skin, whining with increasing desperation as another wave of heat rolls through me. This is happening faster than my previous cycles, the proximity of a mate accelerating everything."He's lying," I say, trying to focus on something besides the burning need. "About you. About Aria."Dane's jaw tightens momentarily before his expression softens. "He's jealous. Desperate. He sees what he threw away, and now he wants it back.""Is that all it is?" Liam "Focus," Mom says for what feels like the hundredth time. "Intent without emotion. Direction without reaction."Easy for her to say. She's not the one trying to light a candle with her mind while simultaneously not burning down the entire training room."I am focusing," I mutter, staring at the unlit candle with enough intensity to melt it if the heat in my gaze was actually physical."No, you're glaring at it like it personally offended you," she corrects with that infuriating motherly patience. "Fire responds to emotion, Liam. Right now, you're feeding it frustration, which creates erratic, unpredictable responses."I take a deep breath, trying again to find that elusive balance she keeps talking about. Twelve hours of practice since my gift first manifested against the Skinwalkers, and I've managed to melt more ice sculptures, warm the room to uncomfortable levels, and accidentally set a practice dummy's hair on fire. What I haven't done is produce a single controlled flame o

"But Mountain Ridge acknowledges a potential external threat requiring our temporary cooperation."Translation: I'm still exiled, but he's not leaving me completely vulnerable while investigating the larger threat to allied packs. Political face-saving wrapped in tactical necessity—classic Alpha Parker strategy."Forest Trails appreciates Mountain Ridge's cooperation in addressing concerns that affect all territories," Alpha Bennett responds diplomatically. "Joint investigation of this specialist and his connection to recent supernatural events serves everyone's interests."As the leaders begin establishing parameters for this unexpected alliance, Aria approaches me, her expression a complex mixture of emotions."That couldn't have been easy," I say quietly, genuinely appreciative of her intervention despite our complicated history. Dane "What do you know of triads?" My father demands, momentarily dropping the formal script he clearly came prepared to deliver."Enough to recognize when someone is trying to deliberately disrupt one," I reply, watching the Silver Creek representative's reaction carefully. The flash of calculation in his eyes confirms my suspicions—this is no coincidence, no standard honor reparation. My father studies me with new assessment, as if seeing something unexpected in his disappointment of a son. "You believe Silver Creek's challenge is connected to supernatural matters beyond pack politics," he says, not quite a question."I know it is," I state with absolute certainty. "Just as I know their Alpha has been influenced by external forces since returning from the northeastern territories with certain... artifacts."The Silver Creek representative's composure cracks visibly at this, confirming Aria's information was accurate. Or accept Silver Creek's suspicious blood oath proposal and potentially compromise the triad right before the Night of Seven Stars?Talk about your lose-lose situations.I pace the length of my quarters, Summit restless beneath my skin. He doesn't understand the human complications, the pack politics. To him, the solution is simple: stay near our mate, protect the triad, to hell with everything else.If only it were that easy.A knock at my door interrupts my thoughts. I open it to find Malia, her expression more serious than usual."Your father is here," she says without preamble. "Just arrived with an official Mountain Ridge delegation. "Liam—""Just hear me out," he interrupts, taking another step closer. "I know I screwed up. I know I hurt you in the worst possible way. I know trust doesn't magically reappear just because I finally realized what an idiot I was.""But?" I prompt, hearing the unspoken continuation in his tone."But I'm not giving up without a fight," he says with sudden intensity. "Not this time. Not again. FinleyI find Aunt Kat in the western training grounds instead of Dane, watching Liam attempt to channel his newly emerging gift in a controlled environment. The enclosed space has been cleared of flammable materials, protective wards established around the perimeter, and water stations positioned strategically for worst-case scenarios.Liam stands in the center, eyes closed in concentration, sweat beading on his forehead despite the cool evening air. His mother circles him slowly, her voice calm and measured as she guides him through what appears to be a basic focusing exercise."Feel the heat within you," she instructs. "Not as something separate, not as something to fight against, but as an extension of your own nature. Your birthright finally awakening."I hang back, not wanting to disrupt what looks like delicate training. There's something mesmerizing about watching Liam like this—his usual cocky confidence replaced by intense concentration, vulnerability in his effort to contro

"That's... unusual."Alpha Blackwood smiles with practiced diplomacy, though something about it doesn't quite reach his eyes. "These are unusual times, Alpha Candidate Bennett. The traditional approach seems unnecessarily limiting given the current circumstances."We're back in the reception hall after the Skinwalker attack, the Silver Creek delegation having been kept in secure containment during the entire incident. Dad sits beside me, his presence both reassuring and tactically necessary—as acting Alpha, his authority supersedes mine in formal negotiations."And what specific terms would this oath entail?" Dad asks, his tone giving nothing away."Still to be determined through appropriate negotiation," Alpha Blackwood replies smoothly. "Which means they're done gathering intelligence and ready for direct engagement.""Engaging now," Finley confirms, and without further hesitation we move into a coordinated attack.I've been in plenty of fights before, but nothing like this. We move together like we've been training for years—Finley setting the foundation with direct central engagement, me somehow knowing exactly how to connect our movements, and Dane completing whatever strategy forms between us.The Skinwalkers are freaky-strong, bending in ways nothing should be able to bend, coordinating their attacks like they share a hive mind. But despite this, we're holding our own, maybe even winning. Then I notice their pattern—two targeting Finley at the front of our triangle, two focusing on Dane, and one specifically coming after me. They're trying to break our formation, targeting each position in the triad separately. They know what
