Chapter 2

Penulis: Year on Year
"A huge burden off our shoulders."

Bruce had said it so casually.

I sat there staring at his familiar face, and for the first time, I realized just how much of a stranger he had become.

But I didn't argue. There was no point trying to reason with someone who had always put himself first.

Instead, I returned to the living room, clutched the cold bank statement against my chest, and spent the entire day sitting alone on the couch.

Finally, I wiped away my tears, pulled out my phone, and searched for a name.

William Underwood.

"Cheryl, what are you looking at?"

Bruce's voice pulled me from my thoughts. He leaned over my shoulder and caught sight of the appointment portal on my screen.

"Dr. William Underwood?" he gasped, his eyes lighting up. "Yes! That's him! My boss told me Dr. Underwood operated on his father's liver cancer, and the old man made a full recovery. You're incredible. I can't believe you managed to get in touch with him so quickly."

He patted my shoulder, showering me with praise and relief.

I gave a flat nod and locked my phone.

"Incredible."

Coming from him, it sounded almost insulting.

He had no idea what it had taken to get onto that waiting list. Over the past week, I had exhausted every connection I'd made since college.

I'd called old classmates, begged friends for introductions, and even reached out to professors I hadn't spoken to in years.

I'd spent hours glued to my phone, refreshing the appointment page over and over, terrified that I'd miss even a single notification.

I hadn't eaten or slept properly in days. And now Bruce casually assumed that all of it had been done for his father.

"Is it really that hard to get an appointment?" he asked eagerly.

"Yeah." I nodded.

"Don't worry about the money. We'll pay whatever it takes. If we have to hire a medical concierge or pay for an expedited service, we'll do it," he said, waving his hand with sweeping grandiosity.

"As long as Thomas gets treated, money is no object. Just focus on this for the next few days. Take some time off work. I'll make up whatever you lose in pay."

I looked at him, a bitter laugh bubbling in my chest.

"Money is no object..."

The $370,000 my dad had left behind was still sitting untouched in my account.

And when I'd spoken to William's administrative assistant, she'd made one thing very clear: they didn't accept kickbacks, rush fees, or special payments of any kind.

Everyone waited for their turn.

"Don't stress yourself out," Bruce added, softening his tone when I stayed silent.

"I know how much you care about Thomas, and I appreciate everything you're doing. Once he gets better, I'll buy you that designer handbag you've been eyeing."

That was his go-to trick.

Whenever he wanted something from me, he dangled some shiny trinkets in front of me as though that made my sacrifices worthwhile.

For years, he'd used this playbook to make me slave away for him and his family.

"I'm going to make dinner," I said flatly.

Over the next few days, our apartment became the stage for a grand performance of filial devotion.

He transformed overnight into the perfect son, hiring an interior designer to turn our guest room into a recovery suite for his father, Thomas Bradford.

"We need warm-toned wallpaper. It will help lift his mood. And let's put down cushioned cork flooring. It's slip-resistant and easier on his knees," Bruce said, pointing at his phone as he rattled off one expensive purchase after another.

"Replace the bed with a German electric medical bed. $80,000. Order it now. And get an air purifier, a humidifier, an oxygen concentrator... Forget the price. Get the best models available."

I stood there watching him spend money without blinking.

My thoughts drifted back to the time my own father had stayed with us. He had been given a five-foot pullout couch in the den.

According to Bruce, the guest room was his gaming room, filled with expensive custom-built computer equipment that couldn't be disturbed.

Bruce also went on a shopping spree for luxury supplements: premium vitamins, collagen powder, expensive ginseng, royal jelly, and anything else he could find that promised to improve Thomas's health.

Soon, our refrigerator was so packed with supplements and health products that there was barely room for food.

Then he spent nearly half an hour examining an expensive cooker before finally handing it to me.

"I've read the manual," he said. "Starting tomorrow morning, I want you to make Thomas a pot of broth every day. Let it simmer on low for three hours. That way, none of the nutrients will be lost."

I took the pot from him without saying a word.

"Please leave." I opened the door and held it for him. "And don't ever come back to bother my dad or me again."Bruce stood there, completely still, staring at me for a long moment. He didn't argue. He didn't plead. He didn't say another word.He simply bent down, picked up the bags of supplements he'd brought, and walked out of my life one heavy step at a time. The second the door clicked shut, I let out a long, deep breath.Jack came over and gently patted my shoulder. "Sweetheart, it's all in the past now."I nodded and leaned into his warm embrace.Yes, it was all in the past. From that day forward, whatever the future held, I would live for myself....Six months later, Jack's follow-up tests came back better than we'd hoped. His numbers had stabilized beautifully, and William told us that as long as he continued following the treatment plan and keeping up the routine, he could live a normal, healthy life.By then, Bruce and I had finalized our divorce. The division o

Thomas reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an envelope, holding it out to me."This is a little something from me," he said, keeping his head lowered. "I'm sorry for everything that's happened over the years. Bruce failed you, and he failed your mother. Take this money and use it for Jack's treatment.""There's no need." I shook my head. "I have enough money to take care of him.""I know money can't make up for any of it," Thomas said, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm apologizing to you on behalf of that ungrateful son of mine."He bowed deeply, which surprised me immensely. In my mind, Thomas had always been a quiet, traditional man who kept his distance from family disputes. I had never imagined I'd see him humble himself like this and apologize to me."Jack was right," he continued, straightening. "We let you down. Joanne was spoiled by me and Bruce, and Bruce was spoiled rotten by her."He let out a weary sigh. "We took it for granted that once you married Bruce,

Jack was startled by the sudden commotion and instinctively clutched my hand. I gently patted the back of his hand to reassure him before turning an icy stare on Bruce."Watch your mouth, Bruce! The registration information is right there in the hospital system. If you don't believe me, ask Dr. Underwood to check."William frowned, clearly disgusted by the scene unfolding in his consultation room. He opened the registration details on his computer, scanned the screen, and then looked up at Bruce."The patient registered in our system is Jack Reese," he said evenly. "The Social Security information matches as well."The color drained from Bruce's face. He had probably assumed I was foolish enough to register the appointment under Thomas's name and then try to pull a switch at the last second."That's impossible!" he shouted, losing his mind. "She must have used some underhanded trick!""Sir, please leave," William said, his voice low and stern. "If you continue causing a disturban

My calm response was clearly the last thing Bruce had expected. He had probably imagined that I would cry, make a scene, or beg him not to leave.Instead, I stood there holding out our marriage certificate. He stared at me, looking as though he couldn't understand what had just happened."Are you serious?" he finally asked."You're the one who asked for the divorce," I said flatly. "Didn't you mean it?"Right then, Joanne lost her mind and shrieked. "Cheryl! You ungrateful girl! Have we ever treated you badly? And now you want a divorce? Do you honestly think you'll find someone better than Bruce?"She pointed at me furiously. "Don't come crawling back to us when you regret this!""I won't regret it." I turned to face her calmly. "For years, I've slaved away for your family without complaining. And what did I get in return?"The moment my dad got sick, all of you treated him like a burden. "If this is what your family is like, and this is the kind of husband Bruce is, then I'm

For a moment, the entire apartment fell silent.I could already imagine the shock and outrage on Joanne's face as Bruce's accusation sank in.Sure enough, a heartbeat later, the bedroom door flew open.Joanne stormed inside, pointing a finger at me, her whole body shaking with anger. "How could you do something like this? Do you have no conscience?"Bruce treats you like a queen, and this is how you repay him? You took a life-saving appointment and gave it to your own dad? Do you even care about this marriage? Do you care about Thomas and me at all?"Her accusations came one after another, but I didn't respond.I simply looked at her in silence before glancing past her at Thomas, whose expression was equally grim. The three of them stood before me like a jury delivering a verdict. Somehow, I had become a criminal who had committed an unforgivable offense."Joanne, take a breath." I waited until she finally paused to catch her breath. "Yes, Bruce asked me to find a specialist. Joanne's voice immediately jumped an octave. "What? How could you not have that much?"She looked genuinely confused. "Bruce told us you'd both saved quite a bit over the past few years. And don't you still have that starter condo you bought before you got married? If you sell it, you'd have enough, wouldn't you?"She had no idea that I had sold that condo years ago to pay for my mother's medical bills."I sold it a long time ago," I said."Sold it?" Joanne's eyes widened. "What did you do with all that money? That condo was worth a fortune. Why didn't you talk to Bruce before selling it?""My mother was sick," I replied. "I sold it to pay for her treatment."Joanne's mouth hung open. For several seconds, she couldn't seem to find a response. The atmosphere in the living room became painfully awkward."Why are you bringing that up now?" Thomas cleared his throat. "Cheryl did the right thing."Joanne came back to her senses and gave a sheepish grin. "Right. Of course. I was jus
