Chapter 3

Penulis: Year on Year
Bruce's phone had practically become a hotline to his mother. He called her at least three times a day, showering her with concern and reassurance.

"Mom, don't panic. I'm having someone prepare Dad's room right now. It will be the finest VIP suite in the entire hospital."

"I bought a ton of imported supplements. Tell Dad not to skimp on them."

"Tell Dad not to worry about money at all. I've got plenty. Even if I have to sell everything I own, I'll find a way to get him better."

His voice carried across the room. Standing nearby, I felt sickened by the irony.

When my dad had left, Bruce hadn't said a single word to stop him. If anything, he'd been relieved that Jack had left his entire life savings behind.

But now that his own dad was sick, Bruce was willing to sell everything we owned to save him. Apparently, some lives were simply worth more to him than others.

...

That evening, his sister, Lindsey Bradford, came over carrying a basket of fruit.

The moment she walked through the door, she grabbed Bruce's hand, her eyes swollen from crying.

"Bruce, how bad is Dad's condition?" she asked anxiously.

"Don't worry," Bruce reassured her, guiding her toward the couch. "I've got everything under control. I've got the top specialist in the city lined up for next week, and I'm arranging the finest private room available."

"Thank goodness." Lindsey sighed with relief before her expression shifted into mild frustration. "Honestly, why didn't Dad say anything sooner if he wasn't feeling well? He had to wait until a routine checkup caught it."

"You know how he is," Bruce said, shaking his head. "He just didn't want us to worry."

I quietly poured Lindsey a glass of water and handed it to her. She accepted it with a brief nod.

"Cheryl, you've really had your hands full these past few days," she said. "Bruce doesn't know the first thing about handling this kind of thing, so you've had to take care of everything yourself."

"It's fine," I said flatly.

"Once Dad is admitted, I'll take some time off work and stay with him at the hospital," Lindsey offered.

"You're busy with work. You don't need to be there every day," Bruce reassured her. "I'm hiring a top-tier private nurse to stay with him. $2,000 a day."

"Still, someone from the family needs to keep an eye on things," Lindsey insisted. "A nurse can take care of him, but she won't care about him the way a family does."

"I already took an extended leave from work," Bruce said, patting his chest proudly. "I'll take care of him myself."

"You?" Lindsey chuckled. "You can't even boil an egg. How exactly are you planning to take care of him?"

"Well, if I can't handle everything, Cheryl's right here," Bruce blurted out.

He seemed to realize how that sounded a second later and quickly corrected himself. "I mean... Cheryl will help me."

Lindsey glanced at me, her expression caught somewhere between pity and awkwardness.

Bruce wasn't wrong, though.

If he couldn't handle something, I'd be there to pick up the slack.

In his mind, I was a machine that never got tired, never complained, and somehow had an endless supply of time and energy to devote to his family.

They talked for hours, discussing everything from treatment plans and rehabilitation to whether they should buy a place nearby for their parents.

"The condo across the hall is on the market," Bruce eventually said. "Why don't we buy it for Mom and Dad? That way they'll be right across the hall, and it will be much easier for us to take care of them."

"Isn't that place insanely expensive?" Lindsey said hesitantly. "It's worth millions."

"Money can always be earned again. Dad's health can't," Bruce said with solemn conviction. "We can pool our money for the down payment. What do you think, Cheryl?"

He finally remembered I was sitting there.

I looked up at his expectant face and forced a smile. "Fine by me."

"See?" Bruce beamed, turning back to Lindsey. "Cheryl agrees. She's always been so understanding."

"Please leave." I opened the door and held it for him. "And don't ever come back to bother my dad or me again."Bruce stood there, completely still, staring at me for a long moment. He didn't argue. He didn't plead. He didn't say another word.He simply bent down, picked up the bags of supplements he'd brought, and walked out of my life one heavy step at a time. The second the door clicked shut, I let out a long, deep breath.Jack came over and gently patted my shoulder. "Sweetheart, it's all in the past now."I nodded and leaned into his warm embrace.Yes, it was all in the past. From that day forward, whatever the future held, I would live for myself....Six months later, Jack's follow-up tests came back better than we'd hoped. His numbers had stabilized beautifully, and William told us that as long as he continued following the treatment plan and keeping up the routine, he could live a normal, healthy life.By then, Bruce and I had finalized our divorce. The division o

Thomas reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an envelope, holding it out to me."This is a little something from me," he said, keeping his head lowered. "I'm sorry for everything that's happened over the years. Bruce failed you, and he failed your mother. Take this money and use it for Jack's treatment.""There's no need." I shook my head. "I have enough money to take care of him.""I know money can't make up for any of it," Thomas said, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm apologizing to you on behalf of that ungrateful son of mine."He bowed deeply, which surprised me immensely. In my mind, Thomas had always been a quiet, traditional man who kept his distance from family disputes. I had never imagined I'd see him humble himself like this and apologize to me."Jack was right," he continued, straightening. "We let you down. Joanne was spoiled by me and Bruce, and Bruce was spoiled rotten by her."He let out a weary sigh. "We took it for granted that once you married Bruce,

Jack was startled by the sudden commotion and instinctively clutched my hand. I gently patted the back of his hand to reassure him before turning an icy stare on Bruce."Watch your mouth, Bruce! The registration information is right there in the hospital system. If you don't believe me, ask Dr. Underwood to check."William frowned, clearly disgusted by the scene unfolding in his consultation room. He opened the registration details on his computer, scanned the screen, and then looked up at Bruce."The patient registered in our system is Jack Reese," he said evenly. "The Social Security information matches as well."The color drained from Bruce's face. He had probably assumed I was foolish enough to register the appointment under Thomas's name and then try to pull a switch at the last second."That's impossible!" he shouted, losing his mind. "She must have used some underhanded trick!""Sir, please leave," William said, his voice low and stern. "If you continue causing a disturban

My calm response was clearly the last thing Bruce had expected. He had probably imagined that I would cry, make a scene, or beg him not to leave.Instead, I stood there holding out our marriage certificate. He stared at me, looking as though he couldn't understand what had just happened."Are you serious?" he finally asked."You're the one who asked for the divorce," I said flatly. "Didn't you mean it?"Right then, Joanne lost her mind and shrieked. "Cheryl! You ungrateful girl! Have we ever treated you badly? And now you want a divorce? Do you honestly think you'll find someone better than Bruce?"She pointed at me furiously. "Don't come crawling back to us when you regret this!""I won't regret it." I turned to face her calmly. "For years, I've slaved away for your family without complaining. And what did I get in return?"The moment my dad got sick, all of you treated him like a burden. "If this is what your family is like, and this is the kind of husband Bruce is, then I'm

For a moment, the entire apartment fell silent.I could already imagine the shock and outrage on Joanne's face as Bruce's accusation sank in.Sure enough, a heartbeat later, the bedroom door flew open.Joanne stormed inside, pointing a finger at me, her whole body shaking with anger. "How could you do something like this? Do you have no conscience?"Bruce treats you like a queen, and this is how you repay him? You took a life-saving appointment and gave it to your own dad? Do you even care about this marriage? Do you care about Thomas and me at all?"Her accusations came one after another, but I didn't respond.I simply looked at her in silence before glancing past her at Thomas, whose expression was equally grim. The three of them stood before me like a jury delivering a verdict. Somehow, I had become a criminal who had committed an unforgivable offense."Joanne, take a breath." I waited until she finally paused to catch her breath. "Yes, Bruce asked me to find a specialist. Joanne's voice immediately jumped an octave. "What? How could you not have that much?"She looked genuinely confused. "Bruce told us you'd both saved quite a bit over the past few years. And don't you still have that starter condo you bought before you got married? If you sell it, you'd have enough, wouldn't you?"She had no idea that I had sold that condo years ago to pay for my mother's medical bills."I sold it a long time ago," I said."Sold it?" Joanne's eyes widened. "What did you do with all that money? That condo was worth a fortune. Why didn't you talk to Bruce before selling it?""My mother was sick," I replied. "I sold it to pay for her treatment."Joanne's mouth hung open. For several seconds, she couldn't seem to find a response. The atmosphere in the living room became painfully awkward."Why are you bringing that up now?" Thomas cleared his throat. "Cheryl did the right thing."Joanne came back to her senses and gave a sheepish grin. "Right. Of course. I was jus
