Chapter 2

Author: April
I forced down the emotions swirling inside me, unwilling to keep arguing with them. It was pointless.

I glanced at the pastries on the table in the reception room and asked calmly, "Weren't you all waiting for me? I'm a little hungry. Could you pass me one of those pastries?"

The air went still. The silence was so deafening that you could hear a pin drop.

The group exchanged startled glances before bursting into raucous laughter.

Selena laughed so hard that tears welled up in her eyes. "Seriously? You think we're waiting for you? Do you really think you're that important?"

She shoved the pastries even farther away and pointed at the welcome sign. "Take a good look at this. We're waiting for Mrs. Fields. Do you even know who that is?"

Of course I knew. That woman was me.

Everyone else jumped in to agree.

"Vivian, stop dreaming. You think you can sneak a pastry meant for Mrs. Fields? You're not even worthy of carrying her shoes!"

"Rumor has it that although William is ruthless in business, he's the ultimate romantic when it comes to his wife. He refused to get married until she agreed to be with him."

"Everyone says if you want to get on William's good side, you should butter up his wife. She's his favorite person in the world…"

I could not help but curl my lips into a faint smile as I listened to their chatter.

After three years of marriage, William had become more than a business legend. Every woman wished her boyfriend were like him, and men could not hope to match him when it came to the love he showed his wife.

Selena, who loved digging up gossip about powerful businessmen, flaunted what she knew. "I heard that William once spent five million on a giant pink diamond just to win his wife's heart. The diamond symbolizes a once-in-a-lifetime kind of love. It drove women all over the world absolutely mad with envy!"

She paused for a moment, then suddenly caught sight of the diamond ring on my finger and let out a sharp cry. "Wait, that's the one!"

The room instantly fell silent again. Everyone held their breath and turned to look at my ring.

Hayden suddenly grabbed my hand, scrutinizing it with a mocking sneer.

"Not a bad knockoff," Hayden scoffed. "Who gave you this? Some broke loser trying too hard?"

I shook off his hand and gave a faint smile. My fingers gently brushed over the ring.

It was the proposal gift William had given me on our very first Valentine's Day together.

It was not the most expensive piece he had ever given me, but it was irreplaceable to me.

To me, it was a symbol of his love. To them, it was something they could not even dream of touching.

Realizing I was not the least bit flustered, Hayden's pupils tightened with a sudden flash of fury. Without warning, he lunged forward, seized my hand, and tore the ring off my finger with a brutal yank.

Before I could react, he had already taken it from me.

Selena took the ring from Hayden and held it up, turning it over as she examined it.

"It's definitely nicer than the knockoff I bought, but at least I have some dignity. I'd never wear a fake in public and make a fool of myself.

"Or are you claiming that you're the guest from abroad, the legendary Mrs. Fields?"

Her words set off an uproar of laughter.

To them, it was utterly ridiculous.

William Fields was a world-class business leader known for his sharp instincts and decisive judgment.

As for me, I was nothing more than the worthless ex Hayden tossed aside three years ago.

They could not even put us together in the same sentence.

Selena tossed the ring lightly in her hand, flipping it up and catching it with careless ease. "Vivian, I really like this knockoff of yours. Sell it to me. Whatever you paid for it, I'll give you double."

Afraid she might scratch the diamond, I quickly said, "Give it back. That ring was a gift from William…"

Before I could finish, Hayden's palm flew across my face, snapping my head to the side. Blood filled my mouth.

"Shut your mouth!" With his jaw tight, he hissed in a low, furious voice, "Who gave you the confidence to keep William's name in your mouth? Do you want to get me killed with your lies?!"

His lackeys glared at me as though I had committed some unforgivable crime.

"Do you have any idea what you're saying? This is our only chance to make a good impression on Mrs. Fields! The head office is sending people down to inspect soon. Are you trying to ruin Hayden's career?"

"He fought tooth and nail to become an executive. Do you think a pathetic ex like yourself can pose as Mrs. Fields?"

I wiped the blood from my lip and slowly turned back to face Hayden.

Perhaps my gaze was too cold and sharp as he actually flinched. A hint of unease flickered across his eyes.

Selena noticed and immediately shrieked, pointing at me, "Vivian, you ungrateful woman! Hayden's already agreed to take you back, yet you're still pushing your luck?!

"Even if you still hold a grudge against Hayden, you can't stoop this low just to get revenge on him!"

Her words dragged me back to three years ago.

Back then, no matter what I did, Selena always managed to twist my intentions and belittle me in front of Hayden.

In the beginning, Hayden stood up for me, even lashing out at Selena on my behalf.

Over time, he began to echo her words, turning his anger to me.

Just like now. Hayden's face hardened, and his voice was harsh with disappointment. "You pathetic, jealous woman!"

However, his gaze lingered on my clothes. Unlike before, he did not pile on the insults.

After a moment's hesitation, he pulled out a bank card and flicked it at me.

"I'll let this slide just once for the old times' sake. There's $500,000 on this card. The password's your birthday. Take it and buy yourself some decent clothes. And if you're not willing to deliver meals for the kid, I'll help you find some other respectable work in a few days.

"Relax! I'm an executive now. That kind of money is nothing to me."

I glanced at the bank card, then at his smug face.

With everyone staring in shock, I slowly pushed away the card he offered and took my ring back from Selena.

"Keep your card. I'm not short on money," I said indifferently, "If you've got that much to spare, go donate it to children in need."

Hayden's face was swollen and puffy, and he looked a little like a pig. I fixed him with a wary gaze. "How did you even find this place? What do you want?"Managing to slip past all the bodyguards to get here had clearly taken a lot of planning. The thought of a frenzied Selena made my heart leap.Sensing my fear, Hayden hurriedly said, "Vivian, don't be afraid. I won't hurt you."I just…"I took a step back and asked him in a slightly irritated tone, "What?""Vivian, I told you before, I only had that wedding with Selena to give the child a father in the eyes of others. You've always been the only one I've loved. I mean it."His face twisted with anguish. "It tears me apart when I think of you being married to another man and having his child. I know I was selfish before, never appreciating you and always hurting you. I swear I'll change! I'll change for you!"I know you still have feelings for me deep down. William is forcing you to stay by his side, isn't he? I can take y

  • Not Yours to Control   Chapter 9

No matter how cold, ruthless, and decisive William seemed to other people, I knew one thing for sure—he would never allow me or Aiden to be harmed in the slightest. My injury would surely weigh heavily on him, making him blame himself.Even though Anna described William's behavior like he was some kind of demon, I did not feel the slightest fear. After all, this was all on those who had brought it upon themselves. People who did wrong would eventually get what was coming to them.Still, I was worried about Aiden. He was so young, and I wondered if experiencing all this chaos would affect him psychologically.I was about to speak to Anna when the hospital room door slammed open. William and Aiden were here, and their faces lit up with joy upon seeing me.Without hesitation, Aiden pushed past his godmother and grabbed my hand."Mommy, how do you feel? Are you okay now?"William's voice was filled with concern as well."Is there any other pain elsewhere? Don't worry. I've taken ca

Hayden did not expect me to ignore him. As he watched my happy family of three, his eyes turned bloodshot. He tried to approach me, but Aiden stepped in front, glaring at him."Stay away from my mommy!"Did you actually think you could make my mommy your nanny? At home, we all listen to Mommy. Who do you think you are?"I know all about you. Not only are you a jerk who hurt Mommy's heart, but you even had a child out of wedlock!"Mommy only has me and my sister. Your kid doesn't get to be her child!"A guy like you isn't even worthy of carrying my dad's shoes. You're not as handsome, not as rich, and you sure don't treat my mommy as well as he does!"Aiden looked him over from head to toe with clear disgust."Sir, do you even know how ridiculous you look?"Hayden's fists clenched, his chest heaving with shame and rage. Everyone knew he had only gotten his executive position through connections. Now, having offended William, his position was on the line, and everything he had

Their looks softened me for a moment."Doctor, I'm fine. Don't worry about them."When I spoke, the doctor visibly relaxed. After checking me over and finding nothing else wrong, he said respectfully, "Mrs. Fields' injury does look quite serious. Thankfully, she used her hand to break the fall in time, so the child wasn't affected at all."I've dressed the cut on the back of her hand. It shouldn't leave a scar."William nodded expressionlessly. Then, his eyes, simmering with restrained anger, swept over everyone else.Hayden, the man responsible for this, felt the tension pressing down on him like an anvil. He had never imagined that I would show up one day as William's wife. His eyes were bloodshot as he stared at me. A hot, bitter resentment swelled up in his chest, and his buried possessiveness erupted in that instant. However, he was no match for the man standing beside me. Hayden clenched his fists until his knuckles went white.William pulled me into his arms and s

Those who had humiliated me in Hayden's presence suddenly went weak at the knees, barely able to hold their glasses. They did not expect that the pathetic sycophant they mocked was actually William's wife!In that moment, they regretted their blindness more than anything. After all, the ring on my hand was one of a kind.I had already acknowledged that I was William's wife. I never lied to anyone. They would have to pay the price for their own arrogance.I noticed a few people quietly shuffling backward, putting distance between themselves and Hayden and Selena. However, Selena's lackey, Rebecca Hills, suddenly raised her voice. "Hey! I just went to the bathroom, and already you're playing house with this random man and child?"He's pretty handsome. Did you hire a male model with your money?"She strutted arrogantly. "At least try to make it look believable. If you spent all your money on this, do you even have enough left to eat? If you beg me nicely, I might eat a little le

  • Not Yours to Control   Chapter 5

William, who was usually so cold and reserved in public, let a faint smile cross his face the moment he saw me.Our little boy barreled into my arms, then froze when he saw the blood on the back of my hand. He shrieked, "Mommy, what happened to your hand? Did someone hurt you?!"Hearing him call me 'Mommy' drew every eye in the room. I heard people suck in shocked breaths. Guests who had just been sneering at me now stared in disbelief. Our son, Aiden, had a knack for sensing things. He was just like his father. His concern warmed my heart and wiped away the gloom that had been hanging over me. I hugged him close and kissed his soft cheek. Then, I replied in a soft voice, "I'm okay."Aiden carefully cupped my hand, his little face full of worry, and gently blew on the wound."Pain, pain, go away! Mommy, tell me who hurt you!"Even though William had taught him that boys should not cry at any little thing, Aiden's eyes reddened when he saw me hurt. My heart ached watching
