Chapter 6

Author: Chocolate Brain
Five years ago, Serena had also stood by this lake. Back then, Luca still loved her. She had just escaped after being held captive by Adriano for a month. She took advantage of a lapse in the guards' attention and ran all the way here.

She stood at the edge of the lake, the wind scattering her hair. Her mind was filled with those dark, suffocating images.

When Luca found her, his eyes were bloodshot red, but his voice shook terribly. "Serena, don't jump... Please, don't leave me."

Serena jumped anyway.

When everyone else was too afraid to get close, Luca jumped in after her. He pulled her out and held her so tightly that she could barely breathe. He repeated over and over, "I'm here. I'll always be here."

What about now? Water surged from all directions, bone-chillingly cold. Serena struggled desperately, but Luca did not even glance at her.

The moment she sank beneath the surface, she understood. The young man who would jump into a lake for her died five years ago.

When Serena woke, she was lying in an unfamiliar hospital room. Her whole body burned with fever. Her throat felt like it had been scraped with sandpaper.

The nurse said she had been unconscious for three days. It was a kind passerby who had saved her.

Serena stared at the ceiling for a long, long time before she slowly sat up. She did not cry because she realized she had no more tears left.

After being discharged, the first thing she did was visit Mattia. The child was so thin that he was nothing but skin and bones. His face was a sickly yellow. When he saw her, he tried his best to smile. "Mamma... I'm doing well. It doesn't hurt."

Serena held him, feeling like her heart was being wrung out. She asked the doctor how much time he had left.

The doctor said, "If we can't find a suitable bone marrow match, a month at most."

One month. Serena closed her eyes.

She thought about Luca's cold, indifferent gaze. She thought about him calling her and Mattia's lives worthless. She thought about Gabriele's disgusting face. She thought about the cameras, the comments, and the laughter. She also thought about one other person—Adriano. The man who had pushed her into hell was now the only person who could save Mattia.

She gripped her phone, her palm slick with sweat. The first call went unanswered, and so did the second. She could not tell if she felt disappointed or relieved, but Mattia could not wait any longer. When the third call connected, she nearly dropped the phone.

A low male voice came through the line. "Hello?"

Serena opened her mouth, but she felt as though she was being strangled.

The person on the other end was in no hurry. He just waited.

"This is... Serena Vitale." Her voice wavered. "Mattia's sick. He needs a bone marrow match. Can you come?"

There was silence, then came a low laugh.

"You mean... the child you bore me?" Adriano's voice betrayed no emotion. "So now that something's wrong with the kid, you come looking for me? Where were you all these years? Every time I wanted to see the child, you and Luca refused."

Serena froze. She had not known about this. She always thought Adriano never wanted to acknowledge the child in the first place.

"I can save the kid," Adriano said leisurely. "But you and the child must come back to me. I don't want my own son calling another man 'Papa.'"

"Okay."

The other end suddenly went quiet.

Serena said each word deliberately, "I agree. As long as Mattia is safe, you can do whatever you want."

After a long pause, Adriano said, "Two weeks from now, I'll come pick you both up myself."

After that, Luca acted like a man possessed. He poured all his energy into attacking Adriano, seizing territory, cutting off supply routes, and buying loyalty. He had been operating abroad for years, and his influence ran deep. The two brothers fought ruthlessly while the entire underworld watched the spectacle.Serena knew about all of this, but she did not care. She just wanted to live her own life in peace. However, every time Adriano came to see Mattia, he arrived with fresh injuries.Once, his arm was wrapped in gauze with blood seeping through.Serena frowned. "What's the point of you two fighting like this?"Adriano smiled bitterly. "He won't let go. What am I supposed to do? He wants me to hand you over. Says if I give you up, he'll back off."She fell silent. "What did you say?"He looked at her, his expression complicated. "I told him to dream on."She said nothing. She knew Adriano treated her well, bu

That evening, Serena took Mattia for a walk around the neighborhood. The sunset was beautiful. Mattia ran ahead, his laughter bright and clear.Serena watched his small figure, a slight smile curving her lips. However, the next second, that smile froze on her face. Luca stood in the distance wearing all black. He had lost a lot of weight. His eyes were sunken, like he had not slept well in a long time.He looked at her. His lips moved, but he could not say anything.Serena's first reaction was to pull Mattia behind her.Mattia saw him too, and his small hand clutched the hem of Serena's shirt."Mamma...""It's okay," Serena said softly, then looked at Luca. Her gaze was as calm as if she were looking at a stranger. "Can I help you?"Luca's throat tightened. He had imagined countless scenarios of seeing her again. He thought she might curse him, hit him, or hate him. He never expected her to be this distant and calm."Serena, I..." He took a step forward.Serena took a step bac

Luca's voice was absolute.Gabriele had always been a coward. He only touched Serena before because Ginevra had repeatedly assured him it would be fine. Now, faced with Luca, he was terrified out of his mind. Almost instinctively, he unbuckled his belt."Hurry up."Luca ordered Tommaso, "Record it."He did not leave. He just stood there watching Ginevra's agonized face. What floated before his eyes, though, was Serena's struggling expression in those videos. When she was sent to Adriano's bed, did she suffer like this too? When Ginevra schemed against her, did she suffer like this too? He was the one who started it all!"Bastard, don't touch me! Luca Romano, I'm your woman! Do you even have a heart?"The pain wracking her body made Ginevra's abdomen cramp. Blood flowed continuously. However, Gabriele kept grabbing her legs and pulling her down. He would do anything to save his own life.Luca watched the scene with cold detachment. "My woman... is Serena and only Serena."Gin

Luca could not figure out what he wanted, but what he knew for certain was this—no matter what, he had to keep Serena by his side where he could watch her. When Tommaso brought him recent photos of Serena, Luca was transfixed. In the photos, her gaze was gentle. When she cared for the children, she radiated maternal warmth. She was so radiant that he could not look away.Luca felt himself being drawn to her again. However, when he saw Adriano's figure in the background, his expression darkened.Tommaso stood off to the side with his head ducked, not daring to speak. He could not figure out what Luca was thinking. He had been following Luca since the day he was confirmed as the Romano family's Don.He could not understand why Luca would send Serena to Adriano's bed. Was it just for power? But back then, Adriano was already out of the picture."Bring her back to me."Tommaso hesitated. "Don Romano, Adriano's been working hard to build his influence in the years he was banished abro

Luca could only watch helplessly as Serena's frail figure disappeared through the doorway. Over the years, he had thought about leaving Serena countless times, but now that she was truly leaving, his heart felt hollow.Ginevra clutched his arm. "Luca, don't worry about that lunatic. Let's continue the wedding. I'm going to become the Don's wife."Luca slowly turned his head, his gaze as cold as ice. "You had your cousin assault her?"Ginevra froze, then laughed. "Oh, come on. My cousin's been single for so many years. Isn't it normal for him to want a woman? The ones outside aren't clean, but Ms. Vitale was at least vetted by Adriano. She's safe to play with."Before she could finish, a hand closed around her throat. "Who gave you permission to touch her?"Luca's entire body trembled. He had promised he would never let Serena experience that kind of violation again, yet all the harm that followed had come from him.Ginevra was frightened by the look in his eyes, but she quickly r
