Chapter 3

Author: The Handsome Guy
As soon as I finished, I turned to leave. But Caitlyn's next words stopped me in my tracks.

"Think about those photos. Do you want them to see the light of day?"

I froze for a moment before turning back. Looking at Caitlyn's cold face, I suddenly remembered her at nineteen, holding my bruised, battered body and crying so hard she shook all over.

Back then, her autism was severe. I chased after her three times a day, trying to get her to eat and take her medicine. Fed up, she hid from me.

I followed her to a street corner and was dragged into an alley. They clamped their hands over my mouth and nose and molested me. I couldn't see any light, and I couldn't even count how many of them there were.

When she found me, she completely lost it. She kept saying sorry over and over, insisting she would take care of everything.

Later, she clasped my hand, looked me in the eyes, and swore that those men had been dealt with and the photos had all been destroyed. From then on, her whole life would belong to me.

But now, for Scott's sake, she was using my wounds to threaten me.

Seeing me stunned, Caitlyn pushed down the reluctance in her eyes and coaxed me softly, as if making a promise.

"Just post something and leave the rest to me. We'll get our license, get married, and have kids. You'll still be my husband..."

"And if I say no?"

"Think about your parents. Your dad has a bad heart..."

She didn't finish, but she didn't need to.

That night, neither of us spoke. She knew I would give in, just as she knew that every time we fought, I was always the one who swallowed my pride and went back to her.

The next morning, the moment I turned on my phone, the screen was flooded with headlines in bold letters calling Scott Burdett a homewrecker who'd knowingly two-timed his fiancée.

Before I could process any of it, Caitlyn kicked the door open. "Charles, Scott's your childhood friend. How could you smear him like this? How could you ruin his reputation?"

Her eyes were bloodshot. Without giving me a chance to explain, she dragged me to Baird General Hospital.

When I got out of the car, I banged my knee on the door and cried out in pain. She didn't even slow down.

Watching her rush ahead, I suddenly wanted to laugh. She was gripping my hand so tightly, so warmly. Yet I felt like I was falling into an abyss.

The lobby had already been set up for a press conference. Scott sat on the stage in silence, hunched over, the corners of his eyes red.

Caitlyn's heart ached for him. She shoved me toward the reporters and rushed over to him.

Countless microphones were thrust in my face.

"Mr. McWherther, Dr. Burdett says you were molested years ago and that it left you psychologically twisted. Is that why you stormed out in a rage yesterday?"

"We heard you've been clinging to Dr. Harp even though you knew she and Dr. Burdett were in love, that you kept trying to seduce her and deliberately set out to be the other man. Is that true?"

"You and Dr. Burdett are childhood friends, as close as brothers. Stealing his woman like this... Mr. McWherther, do you have no shame at all?"

My blood felt like it was on fire, the heat rushing all the way to my head. I glared at Caitlyn in shock.

She'd promised me she would never breathe a word about what happened. So how did Scott know?

Before I could figure it out, the childhood friend who'd sworn to repay me looked at me and suddenly smiled.

The next second, the giant screen behind me lit up. It was filled with my pale face and my body covered in finger-shaped bruises.

Caitlyn's voice was hoarse, her face twisted in anguish. "Charles, the person I am today is someone you shaped, bit by bit, over these ten years. Can you really bring yourself to destroy me like this?"I know I was wrong. I can give up being a doctor, but I want to be with you. Without you, I can't do anything..."I scoffed.People always realized things too late.Back then, she wouldn't have even needed to kneel and beg. If she'd so much as glanced at me, I would have agreed to anything she asked. But now, all I felt was weary.I didn't answer her question. I just raised my voice into the intercom. "Someone, please show Ms. Harp out. From now on, the McWherther family's doors are closed to her!"Before I'd even finished, a group of people hauled Caitlyn out. She struggled and shouted the whole way, "Charles, listen to me, I..."I waved it off and called for the butler. "Replace all the floors in the house, the garden included."…On the day I started at the Harp Group, I h

Caitlyn finally couldn't sit still any longer. The day after she was kicked out of Baird General Hospital, she knocked on my front door. "Charles, is what they're saying online true?"Did you really become my grandmother's honorary grandson? How could you be so foolish? What's going to happen to us?"Do you really not want me anymore?"Even now, she still looked at me with those clear eyes, just like she had during all the countless fights we'd had before. Waiting for me to cave. Waiting for me to apologize first. But this time, I ignored her.Caitlyn panicked. She grabbed me and looked at me with apologetic eyes, softening her voice to coax me. "Charles, say something. I wanted to apologize a while ago, but I couldn't find you."I took down all those posts. No one will dare bully you from now on. That whole thing with Scott was my fault. I shouldn't have fallen for his sweet talk."I just felt like he was the same as me, an orphan with no parents. I felt sorry for him, so.

  • Nothing Left of Ten Years   Chapter 8

Just as I'd predicted, that very night, an unfamiliar young nurse slipped into my father's hospital room under the pretense of changing his IV bag.In her hand was a vial of a drug that could kill instantly, while making it look like the cause had been a sudden heart attack. We caught her, but we didn't make a fuss. We just posted rows and rows of bodyguards outside his room to make sure not even a fly could get in.During that time, Caitlyn tried to reach me as well. She called, but I didn't pick up. She texted, but I didn't reply, and I went ahead and blocked her number. Finally, out of options, she sneaked into the hospital, only to find that I'd taken my father home.Even with all those bodyguards, I never felt truly at ease. Once I was sure my father's condition had stabilized, I brought him back home. That night, a post went viral online. It anonymously laid out everything about Caitlyn and me, from how we met to our ten-year relationship. It didn't name names, but it was

Grandma Agnes sighed heavily, then shook her head. "Just watch. I don't think that Scott is going to let this go."I clenched my fists, my voice full of ice. "If he dares to try anything, this time, I'll make sure he's disgraced for good!"The words had barely left my mouth when the operating room doors swung open. The attending surgeon walked out and wearily pulled off his mask. My mother and I rushed over. "Doctor, how's Keene?"The doctor smiled in relief, "Don't worry. Mrs. Harp brought her team in just in time. They gave Mr. McWherther a dose of special medication, and we were able to save him. Now he just needs proper rest and care. There shouldn't be any major problems going forward."I let out a breath and thanked the doctor.Only then did my mother turn to me, her eyes swirling with complicated emotions. She mumbled an apology under her breath, "Charles, I hurt you when I hit you, didn't I?"I'm sorry. I was just so panicked about your father..."She stroked my head, h

Looking at how self-righteous she was, I couldn't help but sneer. I really had been blind. The first time she picked up a scalpel, her hands shook so badly she couldn't hold it steady. I was the one who opened my shirt and lay down on the bed so she could practice on me.I'd originally studied fine art painting, but for her sake, I gave up the dream I'd had since I was a kid. I applied to study psychology while majoring in nursing at the same time.Plenty of people couldn't understand why I, the heir of the McWherther family, would study something as menial as caregiving. To protect her reputation, I never said a word to anyone about why.I thought we understood each other without needing words. I thought she would treasure me and stand up for me the same way.I saw how it all began, but I never saw this ending coming.I never imagined she'd so easily tell Scott about the scars that had hurt me most. She'd even put those photos up on the giant screen herself. She'd rather stand

  • Nothing Left of Ten Years   Chapter 5

My head snapped up. It was Grandma Agnes, whom I hadn't seen in years.A few years back, overjoyed that Caitlyn's autism was improving, she'd entrusted her granddaughter to me and gone abroad with her people. She'd been expanding the business overseas while taking the chance to relax.I never expected her to show up at a time like this."Grandma Agnes, please, check on my dad..." The moment I opened my mouth, my voice came out hoarse and choked with sobs.Seeing my face red and swollen and how wrecked I looked, Grandma Agnes didn't waste words. She ordered the doctors traveling with her to carry my father into the operating room, while holding up my trembling body herself.Without looking back, she instructed, "Don't worry! My medical team is made up of top specialists from abroad. Keene will be fine. Just sit tight and wait for good news."Seeing her, my mother seemed to have found her rock again. She wiped her tears, nodding, and hurried after them. One reporter still refuse
