The hand never reached Bella.

One second she saw movement exploding from the trees, and the next Harry was there. His arm locked around her waist and pulled her hard against his side. The world tilted so suddenly that Bella barely had time to gasp before steel flashed through the falling snow.

The attacker who had lunged for her never made contact. Harry's blade struck first. The man hit the ground.

Bella's heart slammed against her ribs. Everything happened too fast. Snow flew beneath pounding

Bella ate less at breakfast than she wanted to, and she did it on purpose. It was a strange discipline, performing smallness. She kept her eyes on her plate. She said "Good morning" to Brianna in a voice that had to be asked twice to carry across the table and answered Harry's questions in a word or two and let the toast go cold beside her tea. Every time she felt the urge to look up and meet Brianna's gaze, she looked at her own hands instead and found that the ring caught the light whether she wanted it to or not.Harry hadn't said a word about it. He sat at the head of the table with the morning reports spread out beside his plate, and anyone watching would have said he was reading. Bella knew better. His eyes kept leaving the page. They went to Brianna when a servant came in with more tea and to the door when it opened, and then, quickly, back to the paper, as though he'd only meant to rest them.He wasn't looking at Bella at all, and she understood that this was a kindness."I th

The chair creaked under her hands. Bella made herself let go.Her fingers had gone stiff, and she flexed them one at a time while the library settled back into itself. A log shifted in the grate. Somewhere above her, a floorboard answered a footstep. Everything in the room was exactly where it had been ten minutes ago, which seemed unreasonable.*I'd love to see what.*She'd gone in with a plan and come out with a problem. Brianna hadn't chewed on the flattery or snapped at the jab. She'd stood three feet away and read Bella the way you read a letter you already suspected the contents of. And Bella had handed her the whole page. There was no point replaying it. She'd done that on the stairs and in the garden and half the night before, and every time the ending was the same.So. If pushing made Brianna careful, Bella would stop pushing. She would look like what Brianna had called her: small, grateful, grounded, and someone who'd been told where she stood and had gone quiet. It would be

Bella stayed on the floor long after her legs went numb. The boards were cold through her nightgown. She let them be. There was something steadying about a discomfort she had chosen, and besides, standing meant walking to the bed, and lying down meant staring at the ceiling while her mind did the same slow circuit it had been doing for an hour. She couldn't do it alone. That was the first problem. A confession nobody else heard was only a story, and she'd already told that story once, in a cold room, and watched it fall flat against the word of someone with a better name. The second problem was worse. Wolves heard everything. A heartbeat behind a wall, a held breath, the scrape of a boot on the other side of a door. Brianna had grown up in this house's world. She would know the sound of a third person in a room the way Bella knew the sound of her own name. And the third problem had a face and a jaw that tightened when it was angry and a habit of knocking on doors as though he were sor

The laugh didn't end so much as thin out, the way sound does in a house this size, until the quiet came back in around it.Harry hadn't moved from the edge of the mattress. Bella's hand was still on his. Neither of them seemed to know what to do about that, so neither of them did anything."Has Moore been to see you?" he said. "Since the attack.""Twice. He says I'm healing.""And the rest of it."His eyes went to her stomach and came straight back up, fast, like he'd been caught reading something over her shoulder. Bella watched him do it. She didn't say anything."The rest of it is fine, Harry.""Good." He said it to the blanket. It sounded like a word meant for someone else, somewhere else, a night he'd had to stand in a doctor's office and hear how close it had been. "I keep running it. The night they took you. What he told me afterward. I keep going back to the part where I was twenty minutes late.""Don't.""I wasn't going to say anything.""Your whole face was saying it."He al

Neither of them said much on the walk back from the council chamber. The path from the main hall to the Alpha House wasn't long, maybe ten minutes if you didn't hurry, and Harry found himself matching his pace to Bella's without really deciding to. She'd gone quiet in a way that wasn't quite the same as the quiet she'd carried into the meeting. Heavier somehow. Like something had settled into her shoulders she hadn't been carrying an hour ago."You're walking slow," he said, mostly to have something to say."So are you."Fair enough. He glanced at her again a few steps later, and this time he actually looked, not just a passing check. The color in her face had gone thin. Her eyes had a tired edge to them he hadn't noticed back in the chamber, too busy watching Stone and Brianna to notice much else."You okay?""Tired." She said it like it annoyed her to admit. "It's been a long morning."It had been. He let it go, filed it away instead of pushing, the way he was learning to do with he

The water in the glass on the sill had gone lukewarm by the time Harry finally picked it up. He didn't drink it. He just held it a second, like holding something steady might steady the rest of him too, then set it back down.*He mentioned Lady Brianna's name. And Bella's.*He thought about leaving it until morning. Letting her walk into the Council chamber cold, the way she'd walked into so many rooms lately not knowing what was waiting for her. He'd done that to her once already, without meaning to, and it had cost him more than he liked admitting. Not this time.He found her in the small library off the east wing, a book open on her lap that she clearly hadn't turned a page of in a while. She looked up, and something about his face must have given it away, because she sat up before he'd said a word."What?""Stone sent word tonight." Harry crossed the room and dropped into the chair across from her. Close. Not touching. "He wants to see us in the morning.""About what?""He didn't
