"Are you insane?"
My voice cuts through the thick, cigar-smoke air of the Westbridge United executive boardroom. I slam both hands onto the mahogany table, glaring directly at Chairman Alistair Vance—who also happens to be the billionaire uncle of the kid Ethan Cross just flattened on the pitch.
"You want me to do what?" I demand.
Alistair doesn't blink. He calmly sips his whiskey, his tailored suit completely unwrinkled despite the absolute chaos unfolding on the television monitors behind him.
"Westbridge isn't paying you to save Ethan Cross, Doctor Benette. It is paying you to save this club." Alistair says, his voice smooth and cold. "Ethan Cross is a global asset. Right now, our stock prices are plummeting because he acted like a feral animal. Our biggest sponsors are threatening to walk away."
"Then fine him," I snap. My pulse stutters. "Suspend him. Let me treat him clinically. But forcing me to sign a public relations contract to play his supportive girlfriend? That violates every ethical boundary I have as a licensed psychologist."
"You won't be his clinical psychologist anymore," Alistair counters easily. He slides a thick manila folder across the polished wood. "We will assign Cross to Dr. Sterling. Your clinical hands remain clean. To the public, you met during a team assessment, sparks flew, and you are now the grounding force helping football's bad boy find his inner peace."
"I refuse," I say, stepping back from the table. "My integrity isn't for sale."
"Are you sure about that?" Alistair smiles. It is the smile of a shark that has already caught its prey. He opens a folder and slides it towards me. My blood turns cold. “No, not that folder. Not Leo.” I whisper as I go through the folder, revealing medical documents with a Swiss logo at the top.
"Your brother, Leo, is just twenty years old. A former Westbridge Academy prospect until his spine injury last year."My breath catches in my throat. The room suddenly feels entirely too small. "Leave my brother out of this."
"The neuro-regeneration clinic in Zurich has a slot open next week," Alistair continues, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "The experimental surgery costs two hundred and fifty thousand pounds. Your insurance denied the claim yesterday, didn't they?"
My hands begin to shake. I ball them into fists inside my blazer pockets so he won't see.
If I don't do it myself, it crashes, my mother’s voice whispers in my mind, a reminder of a childhood spent cleaning up everyone else's ruins. Rely upon no one.
For months, I've fought insurance companies, begged for loans, and chased every impossible solution. Leo is running out of time. So am I.
"Six months," Alistair says, sliding a pen toward me. "Play the part. Attend the galas. Move into his penthouse so the paparazzi catch you together. Keep him out of the headlines. The moment the season ends, the club pays for Leo’s surgery in full.
My soul screams at me to walk out the door. But then I think of Leo, sitting in his room, staring at his useless legs.
I reach out. My fingers lock around the heavy fountain pen.
"No touching unless the cameras are flashing," I say, my voice trembling but sharp. "And the moment Ethan Cross acts out again, the deal is off, but you still pay for my brother."
"Deal," Alistair purrs.
I sign my name on the dotted line. My signature stares back at me like a prison sentence.
Ten minutes later, I am walking down the cold, concrete player tunnel toward the away locker room.
The weight of what I’ve just done crushes my chest. I am a professional. I am a woman who prides herself on logic, control, and independence. Now, I am a paid prop for an arrogant athlete who doesn't even know how to control his own temper.
I stop in front of the door. I can hear the muffled sound of things being thrown inside. He is angry. Volatile. Dangerous.
I take a deep breath, forcing my clinical mask into place, and push the heavy door open.
MayaThe heavy soundproof door of the stadium press room swings shut behind us, muting the roar of journalists into a dull thunder beyond the walls. Only then do I realize Ethan is still holding my hand.Heat lingers where his fingers wrap around mine, sending my pulse racing. "Ethan..." I whisper, trying to pull free. "Let go." His head turns sharply toward me. For a split second, surprise flashes across his face, as though he'd forgotten he was still holding on.He releases my hand immediately. "I'm sorry." The warmth disappears, leaving my fingers strangely cold. Before I can ask what possessed him to say those things in front of the entire country, the backstage door slams open.Chairman Alistair Vance storms into the corridor, his polished shoes striking the concrete like gunfire. Marcus rushes after him, looking as though he's aged ten years in the last five minutes. "Have you completely lost your mind?" Alistair barks. His finger shoots toward Ethan."I gave you one statement.
EthanThe rich aroma of freshly brewed espresso fills the kitchen, but the mug cooling on the marble counter remains untouched—07:00 AM. I haven't slept.Every time I close my eyes, I'm back on that gym floor, struggling for air. I still feel Maya's cool fingers resting over my trembling fist, anchoring me to reality while the panic threatens to drag me under. My phone vibrates violently across the countertop. Marcus. A knot tightens in my chest as I answer. "Ethan!" His voice is ragged with panic. "Turn on Channel Five. Or any sports network. Right now." Without a word, I swipe the wall-mounted control panel. The giant television flickers to life. A breaking-news banner stretches across the screen in bold red letters.EXCLUSIVE: Sources inside Westbridge United claim Dr. Maya Bennett received a secret payment tied to Ethan Cross's "relationship rehabilitation."The anchor continues speaking while images from last night's gala flash across the screen. MayaMarcus reaches me as I walk towards the tunnel.“The photographers are waiting outside,” he says quietly. “They’ve been there since before training started.”My grip tightens around the tablet tucked beneath my arm.“Every outlet wants photos of you leaving with Ethan,” Marcus continues. “If you walk out separately after yesterday’s apartment story, they’ll tear the relationship apart.”I close my eyes for the briefest moment before letting out a slow breath.“So we play our part,” I say flatly.Marcus nods. “Exactly.”Neither of us says another word.Minutes later, the hum of the luxury car’s engine fills the silence as we leave Westbridge United’s training ground behind. Ethan doesn't look at me once. After dismantling Julian on the pitch, he has retreated behind that familiar wall again, his arms folded tightly across his chest as the rain streaks the window beside him. Whatever passed between us during training is gone. By the time we reach the penthouse, he steps out without
Ethan The scent of damp grass and winter mud always clears my head.Today, however, the air at the Westbridge United Training Centre feels thick with hostility. I strap my shin guards on, pulling my black socks up over my calves with slow, deliberate movements. My fingers brush the silver ring resting against my chest underneath my training top.“He can come after my jersey all he wants,” my own voice echoes in my head from last night. “But the moment he brings you into this… he crosses a line.”I walk out onto the pristine training pitch. The morning sun cuts through the London fog, illuminating the sidelines. My gaze instantly drifts toward the tactical dugout.Maya is standing there. She is back in her professional attire, a tailored navy coat, her hair pinned up, holding her digital tablet. But she isn't looking at her screen. Her dark eyes are locked onto me, tracking my movements with quiet intensity. She spent her first night under my roof last night. We didn't speak after we
Maya The neon glow of the streetlamp flickers through the thin curtains of my tiny London apartment.I sink onto the faded velvet sofa, surrounded by towering stacks of medical journals, dog-eared books, and potted plants that somehow thrive despite my erratic schedule. The apartment is barely big enough to stretch out in, but for the first time all day, I can be myself.A sharp knock at my front door shatters the quiet.I frown, checking the time on my phone. It’s nearly midnight. I pull my cardigan tighter around my shoulders, walk over, and peer through the peephole. My stomach drops.Marcus, Ethan's agent, is standing in the hallway, looking around frantically like a man fleeing a crime scene.I unlock the deadbolt and pull the door open. "Marcus? What are you doing here at this hour?""We have a massive problem, Maya," Marcus gasps. Without waiting for an answer, Marcus slipped past me and into the apartment. He runs a hand over his balding head, holding up his tablet. "The papa
MayaSecurity closes in around us before I can gather my thoughts. Questions are fired from every direction, but they blur into meaningless noise beneath the relentless crack of camera shutters. Ethan's hand remains firmly around my waist as we are hurried through the grand lobby and out toward the black luxury sedan waiting at the curb. Ethan opens the rear door, silently urging me inside. The heavy leather door of the luxury club sedan clicks shut, instantly suffocating the roar of the press pack outside. The moment we are behind closed doors, my professional mask shatters."Are you completely out of your mind?!" I spin around in the leather seat, my chest heaving beneath my green silk dress as I glare at Ethan.Ethan doesn't answer immediately. He calmly unties his black velvet bowtie, tossing it onto the armrest between us. He looks completely unaffected, though the tight line of his jaw tells a different story."I explicitly stated the rules, Ethan," I hiss, my voice a fierce, lo
