'Mate.'

Ghost knew the term. Dr. Studgens, his shrink, had dived into researching werewolves when he first started showing crazy similarities with them.

She filled him in. Taught him a lot, most against his will. But if there was one thing that stuck with him, it was the 'mate' thing.

Unlike humans, werewolves had a more intense connection when it had to do with the matters of the heart.

Their love lives were predetermined by some deity. And when they eventually meet that person, they feel a crazy connection. That person is called a 'mate', and they spend the rest of their lives with that person.

And if they ever lose that person, through death or shit, then they would be miserable for the rest of their lives.

Ghost always thought it was a stupid and sick bargain. He detested it, having one's life forever tied to another.

So right now, hearing her say that word to his face created a maddening rush inside him.

"Your…mate?" He scoffed, brushing off the strands of hair on her face.
