SWEET POISON

"COURAGE IS SOMETIMES NOTHING MORE THAN FEAR THAT SPEAKS BEFORE COMMON SENSE CAN SILENCE IT."

STELLA

The serving tray felt heavier with every step, and I couldn't tell anymore if it was the silver plates weighing it down or my mother's warning replaying over and over in my head. Don't give Alpha Damien a reason to notice you. The palace corridors had gone unusually quiet as we approached the private dining hall, and even the guards stationed outside the doors stood straighter than I'd ever seen them.

Mother stopped just before we reached the entrance and turned to face me.

"Head down."

"I know."

"No." She lowered her voice, and I could hear how serious she was underneath it. "I mean it, Stella. Do not look at him."

I nodded. "Yes, Mother."

The doors opened, and warm candlelight spilled out into the hallway along with the scent of roasted meat and fresh bread. Mother stepped in first and I followed close behind her, my eyes fixed on the polished marble floor exactly the way she'd told me. The dining room was silent except for the soft clink of cutlery against expensive china.

"Your meals, my Lords," Mother said, dipping her head respectfully.

We separated there. She moved toward the head of the table while I carried my tray to the opposite end, where Lady Valentina sat beside Alpha Derek. And that was when curiosity got the better of me. My eyes lifted before I could stop them, and they landed on him.

Alpha Damien.

For a moment I forgot to breathe entirely. He sat at the head of the long table like the chair had been carved specifically to hold him, his broad shoulders stretching beneath a fitted black coat that didn't do a thing to hide the strength underneath it. Every movement he made was controlled, measured, deliberate. His sharp blue eyes were unlike anything I'd ever seen — cold enough to freeze a room, and yet beautiful enough that I found myself staring a second longer than I should have.

His dark hair fell carelessly across his forehead, making the hard angles of his face look even sharper by comparison. Majestic. There really wasn't another word for it. But underneath all that impossible beauty there was something darker, something that pressed against my chest the way standing too close to the edge of a cliff might.

Sweet poison — that was exactly what he reminded me of. Beautiful enough to tempt you closer, and deadly enough to destroy you the second you gave in.

A sharp nudge against my arm dragged me out of it. Mother was glaring at me, her eyes flicking pointedly downward. ‘Bow’. Heat rushed straight to my cheeks and I lowered my head again immediately, silently asking myself what on earth was wrong with me?

I set Alpha Derek's plate down carefully in front of him, and as I leaned forward to do it, a hand slowly brushed against my thigh. My whole body went rigid. It only lasted a second — the lightest graze, barely anything at all but every nerve in my body screamed at once. I didn't dare look at him. It had to have been an accident.

The table wasn't exactly spacious, and his hand could easily have slipped. And yet something about the touch lingered in a way an accident shouldn't. It felt deliberate. No, that wasn't possible. He'd never once seen my face clearly. Every night I wore Valentina's perfume, every night the darkness hid me completely. There was no way Alpha Derek could recognize me. ‘You're imagining things, Stella.’ I finished placing the plate and stepped back into place.

The silence didn't hold for long. Mother had just reached Alpha Damien's side when her foot caught the edge of the carpet. The tray tilted in her hands, and before either of us could do anything, the plates crashed onto the marble floor. The sound cracked through the dining hall like thunder and my heart stopped cold. Mother dropped to her knees immediately, already reaching for the broken pieces.

"I-I'm terribly sorry, my Lord. I'll clean it immediately."

The room went deathly still. Nobody moved. I don't think anyone even breathed. Alpha Damien set his cutlery down onto the table without any hurry at all, and the soft clink of it against the china somehow sounded louder than the tray hitting the floor had. When he spoke, his voice was calm. Too calm.

"Is this truly the standard of service the Night Wing Palace has fallen to?"

Mother's hands were shaking as she gathered the broken pieces off the floor. "My deepest apologies, my Lord. It won't happen again."

Damien didn't raise his voice once, and somehow that made everything worse.

"If you cannot even carry a tray without making a spectacle of yourself..." He paused, letting the words sit in the air. "...perhaps age has made you unsuitable for palace service."

My mother's hands went still, just for a second, but I saw it happen. I saw the hurt land, and the humiliation right behind it. Something inside me snapped clean in half.

Before I could stop myself, the words were already out of my mouth.

"Please don't speak to my mother like that, my Lord."

Silence. Complete and absolute. The words had already left my mouth and there was no pulling them back now. Mother's head whipped toward me, her face pale with horror.

"Stella!" Her voice cracked down into a whisper. "What are you doing?"

My stomach dropped straight through the floor. Every servant in that room was staring at me like I'd lost my mind completely, and even Derek had stopped eating to look. The air went too heavy to breathe.

Then, very slowly, Alpha Damien lifted his head. Those piercing blue eyes settled on me again, and this time it wasn't brief at all. It was direct. Intent. The corners of his mouth didn't move. Nothing about his face moved.

"What," he said, his deep voice slicing clean through the silence, "did you just say to me?"

  • ONCE A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE LUNA NOW THE DEMON ALPHA'S BRIDE   SHE WAS NEVER MINE TO LOSE

DEREKI couldn't stop thinking about her. That was the problem. I had tried. God knew I had tried. I had sent women away, one after another, each dismissal feeling more pointless than the last. I had refused Valentina when she tried to distract me. I had even convinced myself that what I felt was nothing more than irritation, a passing annoyance that would fade the moment I stopped indulging it. But every time I closed my eyes I saw Stella. Her face. Her eyes. The way she had looked at me when I found her in Damien's house, steady and unafraid in a way that had stayed with me far longer than it should have. And, most irritatingly of all, the way she had spoken to me. As though I were no different from anyone else. As though she wasn't impressed by my title. As though she wasn't afraid of me. She had even stepped on my foot.My jaw tightened at the memory. "That little—" I stopped myself. The door opened. Valentina stepped inside. I didn't bother looking at her."Another woman is waiti

  • ONCE A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE LUNA NOW THE DEMON ALPHA'S BRIDE   THE KISS

STELLAHis lips crashed against mine. For one second I forgot everything. The meeting. Raventooth. The palace. The fact that I was supposed to be standing here as nothing more than his servant. Everything disappeared beneath the warmth of his mouth. Damien kissed me like he had been holding himself back for far too long. Not violently. Not carelessly. Just intensely. His hand remained against my cheek for a moment before sliding down to my jaw, his thumb brushing my skin as though he was making sure I was really there. My heart was pounding so hard I was certain he could hear it. I should have pulled away. I knew that. I had every reason to. Instead my fingers curled into the front of his shirt. The moment I did, his breathing changed. He deepened the kiss. My entire body seemed to wake up at once. Warmth spread through me, leaving me dizzy, and when his other hand settled around my waist I instinctively moved closer. Too close. Much too close. Yet somehow it still didn't feel close e

  • ONCE A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE LUNA NOW THE DEMON ALPHA'S BRIDE   "TELL ME TO STOP"

STELLAThe meeting finally ended. I stayed out of sight until the doors opened and the rulers began filing out. I wasn't foolish enough to stand around where I wasn't supposed to be. Whatever had been discussed inside that room was meant for them, not servants like me. Still, I couldn't help watching, my eyes drifting toward the closed doors every few seconds despite knowing it was pointless. Maybe I would catch something. A name. A word. Anything that could give me an idea of what Damien intended to do about Raventooth. But nothing.Vivian was among the last to leave, lingering by the door in a way that made it clear she wasn't in any hurry to go. She approached Damien with a smile. "It was good seeing you again."Damien shook her hand. "Likewise.""I hope I'll see you again soon.""I'm sure you will."Her father approached next and exchanged a few words with Damien before they shook hands as well, a brief, formal gesture between two men who clearly respected each other from a distan

  • ONCE A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE LUNA NOW THE DEMON ALPHA'S BRIDE   ARE YOU JEALOUS?

DAMIENI cleared my throat, the sound sharper than I intended in the quiet corridor. Stella's head snapped toward me. The smile disappeared from her face almost immediately.Interesting."What exactly is going on here?" She looked at the servant beside her, then at the grapes scattered across the floor. "I bumped into him on my way downstairs. He dropped the basket, and I was just helping him pick everything up."My eyes moved to the man. He froze, whatever composure he'd had disappearing entirely under my gaze. I didn't say a word. I didn't need to. The servant hurriedly gathered the remaining grapes, shoved them back into the basket, and bowed so deeply his forehead nearly touched his knees."My apologies, Alpha. I shall be taking my leave"Then he left, practically stumbling in his haste to put distance between us. Stella watched him disappear down the corridor. I watched her."You scared him.""Good."She turned toward me with a frown. "He wasn't doing anything.""I didn't say he

  • ONCE A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE LUNA NOW THE DEMON ALPHA'S BRIDE   WHAT IS SO FUNNY?

DAMIENVanessa, no, Vivian, had been talking for far too long, her voice weaving through story after story with the easy confidence of someone who had never once worried about running out of things to say. I had stopped keeping track of how many stories she had told. Something about the old training grounds. Something about a summer when we were children. Something about a horse I apparently used to ride, one whose name she used freely as though I should recognize it instantly.I remembered pieces of it. Pieces. That was the problem. Ever since Azrath had entered my life, there were memories I could no longer reach properly, entire stretches of my own childhood locked away behind something I had no key for. Some were nothing more than fragments, flashes without context. Others were completely gone, as though they'd never happened to me at all.Vivian didn't know that. She continued speaking as though I remembered every detail, her eyes bright with the kind of nostalgia that assumed I

  • ONCE A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE LUNA NOW THE DEMON ALPHA'S BRIDE   OUT OF PLACE

STELLAI had never seen Damien look at someone the way he looked at Vivian. It wasn't anything obvious. He wasn't smiling constantly or acting particularly warm. That would have been easier to understand, easier to name and set aside. Instead it was the little things. The way he didn't interrupt her. The way he actually listened, giving her his full attention in a way I hadn't seen him give anyone. The way Vivian could mention something from their childhood and Damien would respond as though the memory had been sitting somewhere untouched inside him all these years, waiting for someone who already knew where to look for it.I sat quietly beside him, trying very hard not to pay attention. I failed."And you still hate mornings?" Vivian asked with a small laugh.Damien's lips twitched. "Some things never change." I looked down at my plate. That was a smile. A real one. I had seen Damien smile before, but usually it was the arrogant little smirk he wore whenever he was about to say somet
