AURELIA’S POINT OF VIEW
Today's mock trial would be a blood bath. It was supposed to be about academics, about improving us as lawyers and litigants, but I knew it was more than that. My class was extra competitive, and the fact that the infamous Levi Vale was our professor made that even worse. Valerie and I already had an unspoken battle for who would be the top of the class, so the fact that we were against each other in a case that hit too close to home made it a lot worse. I walked into the hall to see that it was much fuller than it usually would be. It seemed word had spread around, and people filled the hall in throngs as students, non-academic staff, and professors walked in and sat awaiting the beginning of the trial. My nervousness crept in as I looked at the multitude of people in the hall. I walked to my regular seat and placed my head on the table, appearing nervous, knowing Valerie, she would be relaxed if she thought I was too scared to face her, which could grant me the win. A few minutes later, it was pin-drop silence in the hall. Confused, I lifted my head to see what was happening when I saw him. He walked into the hall like he owned it, one would think he did. His icy eyes landed on me before he said “Today will determine my impression of you two as lawyers, the way you argue, present your points, and defend your clients will forever make me see you as either a lawyer or a disgrace to this profession” he said and I swallowed as the weight of what this was truly settled in my chest. With the number of eyes watching us today, as well as the kinds of people here today, I was concerned that I might lose or not make a good impression. “There is no such thing as ‘I came so close’, you either lose or win, there is no middle ground, and I expect nothing but the best from Harvard’s finest,” he said, looking at the dean. “Shit” I whispered under my breath. From the way he looked at him, this was a silent challenge; the reputation of the school was up to us, and if we failed, we would become pariahs The face of the dean, special professor Donald Davenport, turned a bit red as he looked back at Levi beside turning to us. He silently wanted with his eyes If we did not impress him, we were cooked! Thank you Levi fucking Vale “Will the prosecution and the defense come forward?” he said, making us stand up. From the weight of the silence in the hall, you could hear everything, the breathing, our footsteps, if a pin dropped, you would hear it- that’s how silent it was as everyone held their breath or breathed too loud, the tension could be sliced with a knife. We walked to the front of the hall, facing the whole crowd that sat waiting for the show to start. “You know the facts and some might say you were not given ample time to prepare, but the law world can call on you at any time and you must be prepared, so with that being said….let the trial begin!” he said, kicking things off. She went first, a glint in her eye as she faced the crowd and Levi at the same time, on the board, he wrote boldly. “Should the accused be granted bail for a high profile rape case when public opinion says otherwise? Should the son of the senator be granted bail even though he is the prime suspect? “What? That was not the “Miss Cross, like I said, the law calls on you at any time, you are not always going to be prepared. Proceed,” he said, looking at me, daring me to break, but I would show him just who I was Asshole She looked forward, pleading her case. "In this case, allowing bail to the son of the senator shows the public that their sentiment is right, that power truly controls it all in this nation. If bail is granted, the possibility of a riot and the dwindling faith in our criminal justice system would increase. It would be logical not to grant bail while the proceedings go on, the son of someone of a high profile is a potential flight risk, it would risk witness manipulation, media manipulation, and tampering with evidence. There would be more damage, the family of the victim should be considered,” she said, looking at me with a look of victory. people seemed impressed with her argument as they turned to me., I could feel the weight of each of their stares as their eyes zeroed in on me like they were waiting for me to fuck up. “Miss Cross, the floor is yours,” I heard Levi say from behind me. I faced the crowd with steel, knowing this was my one shot at this, so I took a deep breath and went for the jugular. My voice boomed loudly as I said “The most dangerous assumption in such cases is that the accused is automatically guilty; it completely goes against the legal principle of audi alteram partem, hear the other party. The media, the public, as well as the justice system paint such people as the predators even when the evidence is insufficient. Keeping the accused in prison would be against his rights; he has not been found guilty, the evidence against him is not staggering but rather circumstantial, keeping him in jail would be a slap to his rights! And besides that, the law is not the opinion of the public but rather the law, whether the public agrees or not. As the learned Robert Cross stated in John V. Ludley, the law is the law, regardless of the naysayers in the crowd.” I looked at them as they looked back at me with shock and…..pride in their eyes. “Hmm,” he cleared his throat from behind me. “You both argued well, but there can only be a loser and a winner, so the winner is…….”AURELIA'S POINT OF VIEW.I walked down the east wing hallway barefoot, sighing in content as my feet made contact with the cold marble tiles as I moved. The mansion felt silent; on most days, it usually was, but for some reason, the silence today had an eerie feel. The rain had finally stopped, but in its wake, it left grey skies which looked like they would release more rain on the earth in no time. I made my way to the kitchen, intent on satisfying my cravings. Levi was working in his office, so I was pretty much left to my own company for some time. I held my romance novel in my hands as I opened the refrigerator. So far, the novel did an excellent job at keeping me entertained, especia;;y with its plot twists. The author did her big one with the book. Because for some reason. I could not be away from my tablet for more than five minutes. The plate of sliced strawberries dipped in chocolates, which had hardened, earned a smile on my face as I pulled it out. I moaned at the taste o
LEVI'S POINT OF VIEW.The words from the call wouldn’t leave my head.My feet carried me down the hall as I headed into the kitchen. I needed something to distract me from the impending doom Matthew could bring with him.The storm outside pressed harder against the glass, hitting the windows in the process and eliciting a groan from them. It was pouring like the world would not get rain after some time today, and for some reason, I welcomed it.The storm would be a good excuse to have Aurelia in the house for as long as possible. If he brother or grandfather needed to visit her, they could come over. The wind howled in bursts and rattled branches against the stone walls. Somewhere beyond the front gates, the old iron hinges were complaining in a low, rhythmic screech as they fought against the force of the rain and the wind. But I knew they would not succumb; I only made use of the best materials in my house. And the moment Matthew's threats came up, I had my decorators put up a gate
LEVI'S POINT OF VIEW.The text blinked up at me from the corner of my monitor, its sharp white letters slicing through the darkened room like a knife. It felt like someone had taken a knife and stabbed through my heart, using the words that stared back at me.The words replayed in my mind like a broken clock, like a horror movie, like a horrible song, you could not get out of your mind. You think you can protect yourself from me? I’m coming for you, and all you’ve got very soon. You’ll pay, little bro, you will pay dearly for all you’ve done. Keep her safe for as long as you can, because when I come, you and your connections will not be enough to save her from me.My pulse didn’t just spike, it dropped, as a cold weight settled in my chest, dragging my heartbeat down with it.Was my heart even still beating? I had no idea. I could barely tell how I functioned in that moment.Little bro. Those two words sparked a memory I had buried deep within my mind.It had been years since I’d hear
LEVI'S POINT OF VIEW.They looked at each other wordlessly, their eyes sparking with curiosity and shock. They hadn't expected it, and I certainly relished in the look of shock on their faces."Do you have any proof whatsoever that Miss Veronica made false claims in her regard of you in the video she made?" Corbert asked, and I had finally had enough of seeing his face on my screen."Well, there are the eye witness accounts of her sucking you off last week, just before you promised her, 'I'll make sure that bastard and his cunt get ripped to shreds at the council meeting' after she made you come." He started coughing, his face growing redder with embarrassment, as the hairs on his head stood straight like antennas."Mr Vale! I will not tolerate any lies against my person at this meeting! Do you have any idea of who the hell I am?" He yelled, looking like he had to fight himself with restraint so he wouldn't leap through the screen to lunge at me."Yes, I have proof." At that, he pur
LEVI'S POINT OF VIEW.I watched as Auriela slept soundly on our bed, her brown hair all over the pillows as she snuggled the covers. She's pregnant. She's carrying my child....my mind could barely fathom it.The fact that I would soon be a father and a husband.Vanessa's breakup hit me hard, especially her betrayal of my brother. I knew Matthew hated me, especially after that day at the orphanage. Up until the moment he got arrested, and pleaded with me to take his case, I'd hated him, was scared of him, and desired above all else to be cut off from him. So when he sent the message from prison, about how he needed his brother, and his connections to come through for him, like I was not struggling with my debts at the time.Like he hadn't betrayed me.Like he hadn't treated me worse than an enemy after our parents died. His friends abandoned him, and Vanessa? She flew off the bat, making sure to escape to a place where no one would find her.Not that I ever searched. So the fact that
AURELIA'S POINT OF VIEW.The sound of water going down the toilet fills the bathroom, as well as my breathing and constant tapping of my fingers against the counter. I regarded the pregnancy test strip like it were acid, like it would come to life in an instant, and begin to rip me to shreds."It's okay, baby, whatever happens, we'll get through it together," Levi says, from behind me, as he rubs my shoulders in an attempt to ease my anxiety.I nodded, staring at the strip as we got to the last few seconds before the news would be released.Am I pregnant, or not?The alarm clock dinged from behind us, startling me, so I jumped into Levi's hands. He quickly turned it off, shutting its sounds and plunging the bathroom into silence again."It's time," I whispered.Walking to the counter felt scary, like every step was lava and I was melting, burning with each move of my legs.I picked the strip and turned it around, ready to face the truth even if it would feel like a sledgehammer. And j
