She glared at me. “You think everything is about you.”

“It’s not about me. It’s about us.”

“There is no us!” she cried. “There never was!”

I looked at her. “You can keep saying that. But you and I both know what happened between us wasn’t an accident.”

Her lip shook. “Then what was it?”

“Fate,” I whispered.

She shook her head furiously. “Don’t say that word to me. Not after everything.”

“Then tell me the truth,” I said. “Do you still love me?”

She looked at me like I’d just torn open a wound she’d been trying to heal.

“Don’t,” she whispered. “Don’t make me answer that.”

I stepped closer until there was barely any room between us. “Then I already know.”

Her breath hitched.

I wanted to kiss her. To pull her close. To tell her that whatever else we were, we were real. But before I could move, I heard footsteps.

Heavy. Rapid. Getting closer.

Ava’s eyes widened. “Nathaniel”

I turned, scanning the shadows.

“They’re here,” I said.

“How do you know it’s them?”

“Because Charles’s men don’t hide when they hunt.”

Her breathing quickened. “What do we do?”

“Get in your car,” I said. “Drive out the back exit. Don’t stop for anything.”

“What about you?”

“I’ll distract them.”

Her eyes filled with fear. “They’ll kill you.”

I smiled weakly. “They’ll have to catch me first.”

“Nathaniel, please”

“Go!” I shouted.

She paused for a second too long, her eyes locked on mine. Then she ran. I watched her slip into her car, struggling with the keys.

I turned toward the sound of footsteps. Shadows moved near the stairwellthree of them, armed, intentional.

I slipped behind a wall, holding my phone tightly. My mind raced. Isabella’s warning was right.

Charles wasn’t just coming for me. He wanted to erase every piece of proof tying me to Ava.

And he’d started tonight.

I sent a quick message to Isabella: You were right. He made his move.

No reply.

The men were getting closer now.

I could hear one of them say, “Boss said the woman’s priority. Don’t let her leave.”

A cold rush went through me. Ava.

I stepped out from behind the rock, my heart racing.

If they wanted her, they’d have to go through me first.

The screech of tires echoed through the garage as Ava’s car sped toward the exit. The men turned. One of them lifted his gun.

I yelled her name too late.

A single shot rang out.

The sound of the gunshot still echoed in my mind.

Even after the silence returned, my heart kept beating like it hadn’t gotten the message that I was safe.

Nathaniel’s hand was holding the steering wheel tightly as we drove through the night. His fingers were white. His jaw was hard. His eyes were fixed on the road ahead like he couldn’t afford to move.

We didn’t speak for a long time.

I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t even know what to feel.

Anger. Fear. Guilt.

They all twisted inside me until I couldn’t tell one from the other.

Finally, I whispered, “Was that really them?”

His voice was rough when he answered. “Charles’s men. Three of them.”

I swallowed. “And if you hadn’t stopped them”

“They would’ve stopped you,” he said softly. “For good.”

My breath caught. I turned my face away, looking out the window, but the darkness outside didn’t make me feel any better.

We reached the safehouse half an hour later. He killed the headlights, parked, and sat still for a moment.

“Get inside,” he said softly.

I wanted to fight. I wanted to ask where we were, why we had to hide. But his tone left no room for debate.

Inside, I paced back and forth. My heart wouldn’t calm down.

“Nathaniel,” I said slowly. “You need to tell me what’s going on.”

He didn’t answer right away. He took off his jacket, tossed it on the chair, and ran a hand through his hair.

I stepped closer. “Stop shutting me out. I deserve to know.”

He looked at me then, and his eyes were tired like he’d carried a thousand nights of anger without sleep.

“You want to know?” he asked. “Fine. I’ll tell you.”

He sat down on the edge of the table. His voice was calm, but his words weren’t.

“Charles didn’t just ruin my reputation,” he started. “He destroyed my family.”

I frowned. “Destroyed how?”

His eyes darkened. “He bankrupted my father’s company. Every deal we had, every backer we trusted was gone. Charles made sure of it.”

“That doesn’t make sense,” I said quietly. “Charles isn’t”

“Not the man you think he is?” Nathaniel cut in. “He’s not the savior everyone paints him to be. He’s a hunter. My father trusted him. I believed him. But Charles saw weakness and used it.”

I shook my head, my voice shaking. “You can’t just accuse him of that without proof.”

“Oh, I have proof,” Nathaniel said, his tone sharp. “Emails. Fake audits. Wire transfers to foreign accounts under fake names. He made it look like my father was embezzling funds.”

I stared at him, shocked. “That’s impossible.”

He leaned closer. “It’s not. And because of that, my father lost everything. His business. His name. His will to live.”

My stomach dropped. “Nathaniel…”

His voice broke as he said the next words. “He killed himself, Ava. Because of your beautiful, flawless Charles.”

The room went quiet.

My hands shook. “No,” I whispered. “That can’t be true.”

“I buried him with the debt Charles left us in,” Nathaniel said, his eyes wet now. “And I swore that one day, he’d lose everything the same way he made my father lose it.”

I pressed a hand against my mouth, trying to steady my breathing. “So this… this whole thing about your company, your charm, your friendship with me was all revenge?”

He didn’t answer right away.

I stepped closer. “Tell me the truth, Nathaniel.”

“Yes,” he said finally. “At first, it was.”

The words cut through me like a knife.

“At first?” I repeated weakly.

He stood up, his eyes locked on mine. “Until you happen.”

The quiet that followed was overwhelming. Ava’s eyes darted to the window, as though looking for air that wasn’t poisoned by old betrayals. Finally, she whispered, “What if I refuse?” “Then Nathaniel stays behind bars. Forever.” Her breath hitched. “You wouldn’t” “I don’t have to do anything,” I interrupted coldly. “Charles will make sure of it.” Ava sat down again, her shoulders shaking. “You’re cruel.” “I’m honest.” For a few minutes, neither of us spoke. I let her anger settle, watching as she fought between pride and desperation. Then she whispered, “What if he never forgives me for this?” I looked at her, and for once, I didn’t lie. “He already forgave you the day he was taken away. You just don’t know it yet.” Her eyes glistened. “You really loved him.” “I did.” “Then why didn’t you fight for him?” “I did,” I said softly. “You just didn’t see the way I lost.”She looked at me differently nowless like an enemy, more like a mirror of her own weakness. “What

I walked to the window, my image shattered against the glass. Disappear or destroy. Freedom or fire. Nathaniel’s voice repeated in my mind: Don’t let him win. I turned back to Isabella. “If we do this, what happens to him? ” “Charles? ” “No,” I said softly. “Nathaniel.” She paused. “He’s the leverage. If we make this move, Charles will use him as bait.” I clenched my hands. “Then we take him back first.” Her eyes widened. “You’re serious.” I met her eyes. “He went to prison because of me. I’m not leaving him there.” Isabella sighed. “You’re going to get us both killed.” “Then let him try,” I said strongly. “For once, he won’t be the only one with a plan.” We sat for hours, going over every detail. The vaults. The accounts. The records. Halfway through, Isabella stopped, looking at me with something like pride. “You’ve changed.” “I had to,” I said. “The woman he married died the moment he locked me in that glass room.” She nodded slowly. “Then maybe ther

I didn’t promise. I couldn’t. Because deep down, I already knew what I was going to do. And as I lay awake later that night, looking at the ceiling, I heard something faint a click. My body went still. Then another sound, mechanical, purposeful. Someone was inside. I reached for the knife Nathaniel had given me and moved quietly toward the door. The next sound came from the hallway soft footsteps, approaching slowly. I held my breath. The door handle turned. A voice brushed against my ear before I could even move. “Your husband wants you home.” Cold metal pressed against my neck. My blood turned to ice. And that stopped second, I realizedCharles had found us.“The world doesn’t need proof to hate a woman, it only needs a picture.” The title burned across every screen I passed. “Billionaire’s Wife Caught in Scandal: Secret Affair Exposed.” My name. My face. My life is all torn apart in a single shot. Nathaniel’s hand on my shoulder. My hair is knotted. My eyes

The way he said it was low, cold, and finally made my chest tighten. I looked at him and saw not just a man who’d saved me, but someone already ready to lose everything for me. And that scared me more than Charles ever could. I whispered, “You’re risking too much.” He didn’t look at me. “I already lost everything the day I met you.” I froze. The honesty in his voice cut deep. I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. Minutes stretched between us before I finally found my voice again. “You don’t mean that.” His grip tightened on the wheel. “I do.” He stopped the car suddenly by the side of an empty road. The sound of the engine cutting off felt like the world had gone quiet. He turned to me slowly. “Ava, do you even know what it’s like watching you suffer and being unable to touch you? To see him hurt you and not be able to stop it?” My breath caught. “You think I wanted any of this?” “I think,” he said quietly, leaning closer, “you’ve been trained to believe your pain keeps ot

  • ONE NIGHT TO BURN    CHAPTER 15 The War We Started

I pulled up to the house in under five minutes. No sounds, no signals. Just moving like an animal. I felt the blood in my ears. I felt Ava’s breath in my body. She climbed into the passenger seat without a word. Her eyes were bright with fear and determination. “Do you have the drive?” she asked. Her voice was thin. I nodded. “We get in. We get out. No spectacle.” She laughed, a short, broken sound. “You said that last time.” “I meant it.” I kept my hands on the wheel. “Hold on.” We moved through the gates. For a second I thought the world had slowed. Then everything sped up. A bright light. The sound of a security siren we did not expect. Red. Panic. The plan had teeth to it, and the teeth snapped. “Move!” I shouted. I gripped the wheel and the car lunged. Guards ran from the gates, screaming names. My stomach tightened. I did not think about the engines. I thought about her. We hit the side road as Isabella had directed. It was a blind turn. I took

He walked to the door, paused, then said, “I’m not going to hurt you. Yet. But you’ll stay here until I decide what to do with you.” “Lock me up again?” I spoke softly. He turned. “If that’s what it takes to make you remember where you belong.” He hit a button, and the glass door slid shut with a hiss. I stood frozen, looking at the transparent prison in the same room where I once painted, where I once claimed to be happy. He stood on the other side, watching me. “You were beautiful when you were quiet,” he said softly. “Don’t make me miss that version of you.” I glared at him. “You’ll never see her again.” His eyes darkened. “That’s a shame.” Then he left. Hours passed, maybe minutes, maybe forever. My mind ran wild. Was Nathaniel alive? Was Charles joking about the accident? Was this the end, or another one of his games? I pressed my palm against the glass. It felt cold, dead, just like the man who built it. Then, faintly, I heard something. A whisper. It c
