They changed at the stalls near the waterfall. The sound of the water crashing down echoed through the trees. Mist rose around them, settling on their skin like dew at dawn.

Riley stood there, staring up at the waterfall, lips parted slightly. “Wow… this is… something else.” His mother would be turning the school upside down if she knew he was here.

Valery raised a brow at him. “You look like you’re about to let down the waterworks from your eyes.”

“I’m not crying. It just… feels nice,” he mumbled, almost embarrassed by his own awe.

The students waded into the pool beneath the falls, screaming and laughing as the freezing water slapped their warm skin. Some of the boys formed a noisy chain, dunking each other under and yodeling old folk songs, their voices mixing with the roar of the waterfall.

Riley stood near the edge, his arms crossed, just soaking in the cool spray with a small smile.

Derrick crept up beside him. “Feeling enlightened, old man?”

“Yeah,” Riley chuckled softly. “I fe

Margret didn’t look at her. “No. Go away.”Valery opened her mouth to plead but stopped herself as Sandra approached. She rose, brushing the sand from her skirt, trying to swallow the bitterness of being replaced.Derrick caught her wrist as she walked back. “Come with me,” he whispered.“Where to?”“Don’t ask,” he said with that smile that usually soften her knees. He guided her through the garden path to his room. The moment the door shut, his mouth was on hers, his hands impatient and sure. She kissed him back at first, letting him press her into the door, his warmth dizzying, but when he reached under her skirt, she pushed him away.“Not this again… Stop.”“Come on, my Violet… don’t pretend you don’t want me,” he breathed against her neck. “It’s the perfect time to know each other this way. It’ll make us stronger.”“My mum said I’d wound up pregnant if I played such games.” Valery averted her eyes, shy and ashamed to even be talking about the subject.“Your mum is just paranoid. B

High SchoolThe day started humid and heavy with promise. Valery had hoped to sit beside Margret on the bus, but Sandra waved her off.“Margret said she’s sitting with me today,” Sandra declared, leaving Valery to stand awkwardly in the aisle.“Violet, come to the back!” Derrick called, patting the seat beside him. Riley was two seats ahead, his head lolled against the window, already dozing despite the early hour. After a headcount and prayer, the buses rumbled out of the school gates. The atmosphere pulsed with excitement, drums and claps rising as the boys led the jama songs, whistling and yodeling into the wind like joyous village criers.Their first stop was Mountain Afadjato, standing proud at 885 meters high. The tour guide narrated its legends- of spirits guarding the peak and farmers gathering herbs by its slopes, before the climb began.Derrick gripped Valery’s hand firmly, pulling her up each steep path as she struggled against her own fatigue. Riley trailed quietly behind

Valery clung to him, muttering soft words of gratitude and praise between her tears. Ryan rolled his eyes, rubbing her back lightly.“Meh. I’m still a shitty patient who hates you, Doc.”She sniffled a laugh against his chest. Ryan eased her back gently. “You’re thanking the wrong person, anyway.”Before Valery could ask what, he meant, his mother and Margret approached from behind.“I hope I’m not interrupting anything,” came a smooth, baritone voice. Derrick stood there, clearing his throat, his casual grin barely masking the disdain beneath. In an instant, Valery pulled away from Ryan, dashing over to Derrick to hug him tightly, pecking his lips as though the world might end in a moment. Ryan turned his gaze away for his own sanity.“Why are you here… Actually, doesn’t matter. I didn’t lose my job.” She hugged Derrick again, her voice lilting with relief.“Ah, what a relief indeed. I knew you’d make it out unscathed.” Derrick brushed his thumb along her chin with affection.Valery

“I’d kill you,” Valery replied without hesitation.“There’s your answer. Now you know why she’s mad at you.”Valery fell silent. That evening, she walked to Margret’s house, but her friend refused to see her. Her texts and calls went unanswered. The next morning, she waited to be exposed to her father, staring at the ticking clock. Margret didn’t joke with time - if she said morning, it was morning. But when noon passed, Valery knew Margret wasn’t coming. Her friend could never hurt her like that. *****News of an upcoming excursion spread excitement through the class. A two-day trip to Ghana’s Volta Region.“We’ll start by climbing Mountain Afadjato, the tallest peak in Ghana,” one teacher announced. “Then we’ll hike down to visit Wli Waterfalls, the tallest waterfall in West Africa, where you can swim at the base. After that, we’ll head to a seaside resort near Keta for dinner and movie night by the beach. In the morning, we’ll visit the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary to see the sacr

High School————————Riley froze when he opened the door.“Hey, you’re right on time. We should grab some food after school, then take my lady home.” Derrick squished Valery in his arms. Valery giggled awkwardly, conscious of Riley’s dumbfounded stare. He chose to remain nonchalant, answering with a casual, “Sure,” and making himself comfortable. It was normal for couples to get back together after a fight - especially when they were young and foolish like these two.The days that followed were almost burning to the eyes. Derrick did not hide his affection, trailing after her everywhere. But that wasn’t what ticked Riley off. It also turned out Derrick was still having his fun on the side. As long as he wasn’t caught, he remained a repentant angel in her eyes. Riley was the bystander who knew it all, but for the sake of friendship - and minding his business - he stayed clear of the topic.Once, he chanced upon Valery and Margret having a very heated argument about it. Riley had to j
