OSCAR GRAY

Steven walked into the office, his gaze immediately falling on me.

"Sir," he exclaimed, eyes wide. "You look like a disaster."

"Close the door, Steven, and stop making a scene," I snapped, barely able to keep my eyes open.

My lids felt heavy, as if a bag of cement had been placed over me. The couch was uncomfortable, and I hadn’t managed a wink of sleep all night.

Steven shut the door but only took a few steps forward. "What happened to you? Did you spend the night here?"

I avoided his gaze, choosing instead to look around the office. The answer was obvious—staring right at him.

After leaving the house, I had come straight to the office, seeking something familiar, something that reminded me of Tilda. I’d sat in her chair for far too long, and by the time I realized it, it was already past midnight. So, I’d retreated to my office and collapsed on the couch.

“You can't be running away from your house. You must make...”

I stopped him. “I already asked her to leave,” I announc

OSCAR GRAYI went to open the curtains, and as the brightness from outside shone on me, I realize that it was already morning. I rubbed my head as I recollected the dream I had.In the dream, I was with the kids. I had seen them calling out to me and as I tried to grab them, the strong wind started again and even though I kept yelling out for them, passersby continued on their ways without stopping to lend a helping hand. The kids were trying to tell me what to do when I opened my eyes and saw that it was only a dream. But it felt so real. All through the night I had searched for them. I stopped at the space of every single person and had even offered a prize for anyone with information about them but none had seen a lady with fours little kids. The men were still on the lookout, and with Ghaza’s expertize, soon Tilda and the kids would be rescued. I will only deal with James Grant after then. The door opened, and Steven walked in.“Good morning, sir. You are awake,” he greeted.“My w

TILDA“It is already morning, mommy, wake up,” Diamond’s tiny hand shoved me.“Morning,” I quickly rose and rubbed my eyes.I looked around, others were still sleeping, and the day wasn’t very bright yet. Luckily, I hadn’t overslept.“Go back to sleep now, baby,” I urged her.“Yes, mommy, it is morning and people are already gathered outside.”My heart skipped a beat. Some people were here? That is impossible. Who are they?Nervous, I slowly pulled the slide of the trampoline and peeked through it. Have we been discovered? How did they find us?“You should wake the others, mommy,” Diamond yelled.“Hush, Diamond. Keep your voice low,” I ordered.“Who are those making noise outside?” Diamond moved over to my side and tried to look through the little hole I had created. “Have they come to get us?” she whispered in fear.I pulled her closer to me. “Let me see, first,” I replied.“People are up already, mommy,” Denzel woke up.“Hush, we don’t know who they are yet,” Diamond cautioned him t

TILDAAt this point, we intensified our pace. We had gotten on the man’s nerve, and I should know that there was no way he would let us off easily. If only the boys had listened to me.Miranda was carrying Diamond, and I was holding the bags. Diamond seemed to be slowing Miranda down, and so I intentionally stayed behind them all. If the man should catch anyone, then it must be me.Suddenly, his hand grabbed me, and I let out a gasp.Everyone stopped.“Keep going guys, I am fine,” I called out to them. But they were no fools, none stepped an inch further after I was caught.“If you keep running, you will bring the kids to danger,” he told me.“We will never return, I assure you. Please just let us go.”He chuckled faintly—the first hint of a smile.“I said you could stay just two nights, then be gone.”We froze. It was as if we hadn’t heard him clearly, and were waiting for a repeat. Was he... offering us shelter? Even after how the kids had acted?OSCAR GRAYStepping out of the car,

OSCAR GRAY “Okay, I get it,” Grandpa said for what must have been the tenth time that evening. “Alicia entered, and Tilda ran off.” He paused at the exact spot he always did, just as he had every other time he retold the story—like he couldn’t believe it, like he was still trying to give me one last chance to make it right. He gave me a hard look, his eyes lined with disappointment. “No, that’s not it. You did nothing and watched her leave—after hearing the truth from Alicia. Then, somehow, she made it back to her place before you, even though you used the restricted lane. And by the time you got there, she had already left with the quadruplets… who turned out to be hers.”His stare was unwavering, burning straight through me. Then, just like clockwork, he asked again, “Tell me, boy—how long did it take you to finally start looking for her?”I opened my mouth to reply, but he didn’t wait.“You say you tried. You say you’ve been sear

TILDAThe horrible smell from the truck was the least of our problems. There was nowhere to properly rest, and the kids made do with the broken plank, Diamond already curled up and sleeping with her head resting on Denzel’s thighs.“Mom, some insects are biting me,” she whimpered.“Come here, dear,” I reached out and lifted her gently into my arms. “You have to manage for now, okay? This won’t last forever.”“But can’t we go in already, please? I really want to lie on a bed,” she pleaded, her voice soft and tired. Her words pierced through me. I wanted nothing more than to grant that simple request. But I knew James too well to take chances—not now.“Don’t worry, Princess,” I soothed her, brushing her hair back. “As soon as it gets a little darker, we’ll go in. I promise.”Miranda sighed. “Maybe we should’ve brought our phones. I could’ve called Grace first. If you’re so worried about James, hearing from her would’ve helped. With her assurance, we’d be inside already.”I shook my head

OSCAR GRAY“This is all your doing, Alicia,” I snapped, breath ragged. The mere sight of her churned my stomach with disgust. She raised her eyebrows in mock innocence. “Me? No, Oscar. I’m not the one trying to force you to raise someone else’s bastards.”Eddy came downstairs then, holding his phone in one hand. His voice was grave.“Sir, I think… I think she’s moved. The kids too. It seems they packed the important stuffs and moved.”My heart sank. “No. No, that’s not possible,” I whispered, staggered. It all started to make sense—the timing of the move, how distant she had suddenly become, how I never got to see the kids and her together at the party. I should have realized. I should’ve known.Didn’t she trust me enough to tell me about them?“She’s been exposed,” Alicia said triumphantly. “Of course she ran. That’s what she’s good at—running and hiding.”I ignored her taunts and turned to Eddy, my eyes burning.“We must find her. Where would she go with the kids? She can’t just van
