Chapter 5

The scent of expensive oil paint, expensive champagne, and even more expensive perfume hung heavy in the air of the Grand Gallery. Located in the oldest, most historic wing of the university campus, the private art exhibition was an event reserved strictly for the institution’s elite.

Antonia Burnwood felt like a deep-sea creature that had been abruptly dragged onto a sunlit beach. She stood near a towering abstract canvas, suffocating in the formal atmosphere. For the first time all semester, she wasn't wearing her oversized sweater or her trusted white lab gown. Instead, she had squeezed into a simple, dark green velvet dress she’d borrowed from her roommate, paired with low, sensible heels. She felt entirely exposed without her glasses—switched out for uncomfortable contact lenses—and her curly hair was pinned back in a style that felt far too proper. She kept her hands clamped around a glass of sparkling water like it was a life preserver.

"You look completely ridiculous," a familiar, low voice murmured from beside her.

Antonia turned her head. Portia Walker stepped into the soft gallery lighting, and Antonia’s lungs completely forgot how to process oxygen.

Portia wasn't in her iconic student uniform tonight. She wore a striking, midnight-black asymmetric cocktail dress that clung perfectly to her silhouette, paired with elegant silver jewelry that caught the light whenever she moved. Her sleek bob was tucked neatly behind one ear, and her dark eyes held a dangerous, sophisticated gleam.

"Thank you," Antonia muttered, her voice laced with defensive sarcasm as her face flushed a deep crimson. "I feel ridiculous. I don't know what these paintings mean, I don't know what anyone is saying, and I am currently calculating the exact structural load of those high heels before your ankles snap."

Portia let out a quiet, genuine laugh, stepping close enough that the silk of her dress brushed against Antonia's velvet sleeve. "The heels are Italian, Burnwood. The structural integrity is flawless. And you don't look ridiculous. You look... beautiful."

Antonia froze, her heart launching into a chaotic, unscientific rhythm. She stared at Portia, completely disarmed by the raw sincerity in the older girl’s eyes.

"Portia, darling! There you are."

The sophisticated bubble shattered instantly as three seniors from the humanities quad strolled over. Leading the pack was Chloe, a wealthy legacy student whose charcoal senior blazer was currently draped effortlessly over her shoulders. Chloe looked at Portia with a wide, bright smile before her eyes slid down to Antonia. The smile instantly turned sharp, cold, and dripping with condescension.

"We were wondering where you went," Chloe said, completely ignoring Antonia's presence. "The dean has been looking for you in the VIP lounge. Your father’s foundation just cleared the funding for the new lecture hall."

"I'll speak with the dean later, Chloe," Portia replied, her voice instantly dropping into that icy, authoritative cadence she reserved for the campus elite. She casually shifted her weight, deliberately stepping slightly in front of Antonia in a protective gesture. "Right now, I am introducing my research partner. This is Antonia Burnwood."

Chloe blinked, her gaze lingering on Antonia’s simple dress and nervous posture. A quiet, mocking chuckle escaped her lips. "Oh. The science girl from the honors seminar. The one from the gym incident." Chloe turned back to Portia, her voice dropping into a patronizing stage-whisper. "Portia, really, the project is over. You got your A-plus. You don't need to keep doing... academic charity work. We're going to the after-party at the estate, come with us. Leave the help to her data sheets."

Antonia felt a cold, crushing weight drop into her stomach. The familiar, painful sting of social insecurity rushed back, turning her knuckles white around her glass. Chloe was right. The presentation was done. She was just an invisible lab ghost; she didn't belong in this glittering world of silver spoons and family legacies. Antonia stepped back, lowering her eyes. "It's fine, Portia. I should probably get back to the lab anyway—"

"You will stay right here, Antonia," Portia commanded, her voice cutting through the gallery noise like a razor blade.

Antonia looked up, startled. Portia had turned fully toward Chloe. Her posture was rigid with a terrifying, formidable fury, her dark eyes flashing with pure venom.

"Let me make something incredibly clear to you, Chloe," Portia said, her tone a dangerous, sophisticated whisper that made the surrounding students turn to look. "Antonia is not my charity case. She is my equal. Her mind is more brilliant than anyone's in this entire room, and if it weren't for her data, my economic thesis would be entirely empty words. If you ever disrespect her, or anyone I choose to stand beside, again, I will personally ensure your family's name is stripped from every committee board my father controls."

Chloe’s face went completely pale. She stumbled back half a step, her mouth open in utter shock. No one had ever seen Portia break her perfect, polite facade to fiercely defend anyone—let alone a total nobody from the life sciences building.

"We're leaving," Portia declared.

Without waiting for a response, Portia reached down, her warm fingers wrapping securely and tightly around Antonia’s wrist. She dragged Antonia away from the stunned crowd, marching past the security guards and out into the cool, dark autumn night air of the gallery courtyard.

The rain had stopped, leaving the stone courtyard damp and smelling of wet earth. Portia finally stopped near a stone fountain, letting go of Antonia’s wrist. She was breathing heavily, her pristine, cold composure entirely shattered by the raw anger humming through her veins.

"I'm sorry," Portia whispered fiercely, looking away, her hands trembling slightly as she smoothed down her black dress. "I hate them. I hate the way they look at people. I hate the way they try to dictate who I am supposed to be."

Antonia stood entirely still, watching the campus royalty completely unravel in front of her. The fear was entirely gone, replaced by a deep, overwhelming wave of tenderness. She stepped forward, crossing the invisible boundary line between their two worlds.

"Portia," Antonia said softly.

Portia turned her head. Before she could speak, Antonia reached out, her fingers gently catching the cuff of Portia’s sleeve, pulling her just an inch closer.

"Thank you," Antonia whispered, her eyes shining in the moonlight. "No one has ever stood up for me like that."

Portia’s anger evaporated instantly. She looked down at Antonia, her gaze softening into something so intensely raw, vulnerable, and magnetic that the entire universe seemed to shrink down to just the two of them. Portia stepped closer, bridging the final millimeter of space between them, her breath catching as her eyes drifted down to Antonia's lips.

"I will always stand up for you, Antonia," Portia murmured, her voice a low, breathless confession. "Because you're the only real thing in my entire world."

  • OUR UNEXPECTED UNIVERSE   Chapter 19

The Boston morning air was crisp and carried the sharp, energizing scent of the nearby harbor. It was exactly 7:30 AM, and the sun was reflecting brilliantly off the glass facade of the Boston Biomedical Research Institute.Antonia Burnwood stood in front of the full-length mirror in their new apartment, her hands trembling as she tried to adjust the collar of her button-down shirt. For the first time in years, she wasn't wearing an oversized knit sweater or a baggy t-shirt. She was dressed in sharp, navy tailored trousers and a crisp blouse—a professional look she wasn't entirely sure she could pull off. Her trusty white lab coat was folded neatly over her arm, a pristine shield ready for her first day as a post-graduate research fellow."You're overthinking the variables again," a smooth, authoritative voice murmured from the doorway.Antonia turned around. Portia Walker was leaning against the frame, looking effortlessly striking in her own morning corporate attire—a perfectly stru

The key to their survival was supposed to be organization, but Boston’s late-summer humidity had entirely corrupted the data.Antonia Burnwood sat cross-legged on a mountain of flattened cardboard boxes, her hair held back by a blue plastic pipette tip she’d salvaged from her packing crates. She was wearing her old, oversized vintage band t-shirt, baggy cargo shorts, and her glasses kept sliding down her nose from the sweat. Around her, their new brownstone apartment looked less like a romantic sanctuary and more like a laboratory that had exploded. Bubble wrap covered the polished oak floors, and a tower of science journals threatened to collapse onto a sleek, unboxed leather armchair."According to my calculations, we are missing three crucial metric wrenches, and your economic textbooks are currently occupying the shelf space designated for my biochemistry equipment," Antonia called out, wiping her brow.Portia Walker stepped out of the tiny bedroom, and the sheer chaos of the livi

The iron gates of the Walker estate loomed like the entrance to a high-society fortress, but inside the grand, marble-floored dining room, the atmosphere was suffocatingly quiet.Antonia Burnwood sat rigidly at the long, polished mahogany table. She had traded her trusted white lab gown for a simple, elegant navy dress, and her wire-rimmed glasses were pushed neatly up her nose. Her fingers were clamped tightly around a silver salad fork, her internal anxiety spiking as she felt the heavy, critical gaze of Portia's parents slicing across the room.To her right, Portia Walker was an absolute pillar of composure. She wore a sharp, custom-tailored emerald blazer that screamed generational power, her posture effortlessly straight. But beneath the edge of the pristine white tablecloth, out of sight of the serving staff, Portia’s warm fingers were securely locked with Antonia's, her thumb tracing small, grounding circles over Antonia's knuckles. At the head of the table sat Alistair Walker,

The heavy oak doors of Room 402 had barely swung shut behind the departing honors board when the sterile judicial atmosphere fractured completely.Dean Catherine Harrison remained at the center bench, her sharp eyes locking onto Chloe Davenport, who was frantically gathering her loose notes from the floor. "Miss Davenport," the Dean’s voice cut through the rustle of the emptying room like a winter frost. "Do not leave the hall. A formal allegation of malicious academic sabotage carries severe consequences, especially when weaponized to threaten another student’s institutional standing. You will remain here to discuss the immediate suspension of your own honors distinction."Chloe’s face drained of what little color it had left. She looked desperately toward her two friends, but they were already backing out the door, eager to distance themselves from a fallen social queen.Antonia and Portia didn't stay to watch the execution. Hand-in-hand, their fingers locked so tightly their knuckl

The long mahogany table in Room 402 had been reconfigured into a sterile judicial bench. Behind it sat the three judges of the University Honors Board, flanked by the Dean of Academic Affairs, a formidable woman whose silver hair was pinned back with a precision that matched her reputation. Professor Sterling sat at the far end, his usual warm, tweed-clad demeanor replaced by a tense, deeply concerned silence.Antonia Burnwood and Portia Walker stood side-by-side at the wooden podium facing the board.Chloe and her faction sat smugly in the gallery seats behind them, the cream-colored manila folder opened conspicuously on Chloe's lap like a trophy. The air in the lecture hall felt chemically charged, heavy with the suffocating bureaucracy of an institutional trial."Let us bring this extraordinary academic integrity hearing to order," Dean Vance declared, her voice echoing sharply off the high timber ceilings. She adjusted her spectacles, her sharp gaze scanning the digital dossier on

The heavy oak doors of Room 402 had always felt imposing, but today they carried the distinct, suffocating weight of an execution chamber.Antonia Burnwood walked down the fourth-floor corridor, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She was wrapped securely in her stark white lab gown, her heavy leather binder tucked under one arm like a shield. Beside her, Portia Walker was an absolute pillar of cold composure. Her elite senior uniform was immaculate, every fold of her pleated skirt and every line of her charcoal blazer screaming untouchable authority. But beneath the edge of their sleeves, out of sight of the lingering underclassmen, Portia’s fingers brushed against Antonia's hand in a brief, grounding squeeze. They rounded the final corner, and the quiet corridor abruptly turned hostile.Chloe was standing directly in front of the classroom entrance. She wasn't alone. Flanked by her two usual humanities sycophants, she was holding a thick, cream-colored manila fold
