One belongs in the quiet sanctuary of the lab; the other commands every room she walks into. Antonia thrives on variables she can control. As a brilliant but socially invisible biology major, her comfort zone is buried beneath microscope slides and complex data. She has mastered the art of being unnoticeable —until a high-stakes research project forces her into the orbit of Portia, the university’s most formidable, impeccably dressed, and intimidatingly sophisticated senior. To Antonia, Portia is an untouchable force of nature. To Portia, Antonia is an annoying complication to her flawless academic record. Their initial partnership is defined by sharp tension, icy silences, and Antonia’s paralyzing social awkwardness. But late nights in the campus library have a way of stripping away carefully constructed facades. When Antonia accidentally catches a rare glimpse beneath Portia’s pristine, chilly exterior, she discovers a woman buckling under the suffocating weight of an elite family legacy. Instead of walking away, Antonia offers an unexpected, quiet sanctuary. Suddenly, the boundaries between them blur. Portia pulls Antonia into a glittering, dangerous world of high-end galleries and elite social circles, fiercely defending her against the judgment of her wealthy peers. Just as Antonia realizes her terror has melted into a magnetic, consuming attraction, a cruel reminder of their social divide tears them apart. Believing she is nothing more than a passing novelty to a woman like Portia, Antonia retreats into total isolation. But Portia has never lost a variable she cared about. To bridge the chasm between their worlds, she must do the one thing she has never done: shatter her perfect reputation, storm Antonia’s chaotic lab, and risk everything on a confession that could either save them or ruin them both.

Chapter 1

Prologue

The humid air inside the university's central gymnasium was thick with the scent of floor wax, printing toner, and the collective anxiety of two thousand students. It was Registration Day—a chaotic, bureaucratic nightmare where academic futures were fought over in crowded lines.

Antonia was entirely in her element, which meant she was trying to be as invisible as possible. She wore her favorite oversized, faded vintage band t-shirt, baggy cargo pants, and scuffed sneakers. Her unruly curls were tossed into a messy, lopsided bun held together by a stray ballpoint pen. She kept her head down, fiercely focused on the color-coded master schedule clipped to her clipboard. She had calculated her path through the department tables down to the exact minute to avoid human interaction.

Then, the sea of students in front of her suddenly parted.

Portia walked into the gymnasium, and the chaotic room seemed to instantly re-center around her. Even in civilian clothes, she looked like she belonged on a high-fashion runway.

She wore an impeccably tailored, cream-colored silk button-down shirt tucked into structured, high-waisted wide-leg trousers, completed with a pair of sleek designer loafers. She moved with an untouchable, aristocratic sophistication that practically demanded people step out of her way. Her eyes were fixed on the honors registration desk, exuding an aura of absolute command.

Antonia, fiercely tracking her own path and refusing to break her calculated stride for campus royalty, didn't pivot in time.

Smack.

The collision was sharp. Antonia’s clipboard flew out of her hands, sending a chaotic flurry of color-coded schedules, biology syllabus sheets, and loose pens scattering across the polished wooden floor. Portia stumbled back half a step, her pristine leather satchel slipping from her shoulder.

"Watch where you are going," Portia said, her voice dropping into a low, icy cadence that could freeze water. She didn't look down at the mess; she looked directly at Antonia, her sharp eyes narrowing with immediate, cold disdain at Antonia's baggy, casual clothes. "This isn't a crowded hallway. The room is wide enough for basic spatial awareness."

Antonia’s anxiety instantly spiked, but the sheer arrogance in Portia’s tone ignited a rare, defensive spark inside her. She dropped to her knees to gather her papers, glaring upward.

"Spatial awareness is a two-way metric," Antonia fired back, her voice shaking slightly but holding its ground. "You walked into the center corridor without adjusting your velocity. If you weren't treating the gymnasium floor like your personal catwalk, you would have seen me."

A few nearby freshmen gasped. No one spoke to Portia that way.

Portia stood entirely still, her expression hardening into a mask of pure, formidable intimidation. She looked down at Antonia on the floor, her gaze lingering on the messy curls and the worn vintage shirt. "A catwalk? I am trying to reach the registration desk before the system locks out the advanced seminars. Some of us actually have a rigorous schedule to secure, rather than wandering around looking like we rolled straight out of bed."

Antonia snapped her clipboard clean and stood up, her chest heaving as she adjusted her glasses. "For your information, my clothes are practical. And my schedule is perfectly calculated. Or it was, before your massive ego disrupted my trajectory."

"Then I suggest you calculate a wider turning radius next time," Portia replied, her voice dropping to a dangerous, sophisticated whisper. She stepped forward, deliberately stepping right over Antonia's favorite black ink pen, crushing the plastic casing beneath the heel of her pristine loafer with a sharp crack.

She didn't apologize. She simply gave Antonia one last, devastatingly dismissive glance before turning on her heel and walking toward the honors desk, leaving a trail of absolute silence in her wake.

Antonia stared at her ruined pen, her knuckles turning white around her clipboard. The anxiety was completely gone, replaced by a burning, furious resentment. She didn't know who that incredibly sophisticated, deeply infuriating woman was, but a silent declaration of war had just been signed on the gymnasium floor.

Neither of them had any idea that their fiercely contested schedules were identical, and that they were about to spend the entire semester locked in the exact same classrooms.
