Amelia's POV
"By the way," he said later, while we were leaving the eatery, "if all you want to do is stop your ex boyfriends from bothering you, why didn't you make a deal with some other man?" "Why did I come to you?" I replied. "Well, you're the only man whose jacket is in my possession, so I said why not. And you helped me out at the bar too, so I know you're somehow a gentleman." "Somehow," he repeated, huffing a laugh. "Yup, somehow," I replied, grinning. "But it's mostly because you're the only one I could think of who is actually powerful enough to be a threat to my ex-boyfriends." My answers weren't lies. They just weren't truths either, and I shoved down the guilt that reminder brought with it. 'You are the only man in the city, aside from Mr Domitia and Jeremy, who aren't total strangers to me,' I thought. 'And you are the only one that can save me from losing this new life I just got. I'm sorry I can't tell you the truth. But I am very grateful, Julian." …… I decided that I wasn't grateful to be on this shopping trip with Isabella's friends. I wasn't grateful that Mandy's birthday had come sooner than I expected. Because in all that talk about shopping, why did it never hit me that I was too broke for the kind of shopping these people do? It was almost like they weren't buying clothes because they want to wear them, and rather were buying them just for the sake of it. "Bella!" Ray called. I turned to see her holding up a blue sundress and beaming at me. "You should try this on!" she said. I walked over to look at the price tag, and I had to fight to keep myself from cringing. "It's… nice," I said. "But I don't need a wardrobe upgrade at the moment. I just got one last week." I did not, in fact, get one last week. "What?" Mandy exclaimed, looking like I had just told her that somebody died. "Why the hell are you here, then?" "For your birthday," I replied with a shrug. She continued to look horrified. "So you're not picking out anything at all?" she asked. "Not even a… a pair of shoes?" "Nope," I replied. "Not a thing." "Hell no," Mandy declared. "You don't come along on my shopping trip just to look around. You're picking something. My treat." 'Wow,' I thought. 'That is one order I would gladly obey.' "Okay." "Good," she replied, looking pleased with herself. I decided to pick out an outfit for my date with Julian Lake. Since we had agreed on dinner at this fancy celebrity restaurant, I headed towards the evening gowns. I was admiring a row of sparkly dresses when Jackie appeared beside me. For a while, she pretended to be trying diligently to pick a dress. Then when I wanted to move to a different row, she turned immediately to stop me. "It looks like Ray has forgiven you," she said. I shrugged. "She shouldn't have," Jackie said. "If you say so, Jackie," I replied, turning away. "You might have fooled everybody with your lies," she went on, "but I'm not buying it. I know you, Isabella, and I'm not going to let everyone else fall for your tricks." "Jackie," I said with a dramatic sigh, "I know you wish I had given up on Elijah the way I gave up on Julian Lake, but maybe you should just be happy for Ray instead of wishing you were in her shoes. She's been such a good friend to you, you know." Jackie's fists clenched and unclenched at her sides, and she fixed me with a look full of pure hatred. Then the hateful expression gave way to a bright smile. "You know what, maybe you're right," she said. "Maybe you've really changed so much that you would willingly stop pursuing a guy for your friend's sake. So I'll give you the benefit of doubt." "Um…" I said, hesitating. This should have been good news, but there was never any good news with Jackie. "Uh… okay?" "Perfect!" she said, clapping both hands together. Before I could wonder what hole I had just dug for myself, Jackie sashayed out of the row and into the dressing room where the others were trying on outfits. I hurried after her, but only arrived just in time to hear her making her announcement. "Girls!" she was saying cheerfully, "I've got news! As a show of good faith, Isabella has agreed to prove that she's taken her eyes off Julian Lake!" My eyes widened. "What?" I blurted out. "I never said that!" "What was that, darling?" Jackie said, batting her lashes innocently. "You don't want to put Ray's poor heart at ease?" 'I didn't say that either!' I screamed inside. 'Stop twisting my words to mean whatever you want them to, bitch!' But Ray was already blinking at me, looking ready to cry if I said the wrong thing. Damn it. I had borrowed money I couldn't pay back from Mandy just to fix things between us, and Jackie was trying to ruin it again. "Fine," I replied. "So, what do I have to do?" I expected Jackie to ask me to hand over my phone so she could go through the calls and messages. I was already trying to think up a way out of that when she spoke. "You'll play everyone's assistant for today," she said. "What?" I said. "How is that supposed to prove that I don't have my eyes on Julian Lake?" "It's a test of loyalty," Jackie replied smugly. "If you can do this for your friends, then you can do anything for your friends. Including letting go of Julian Lake." What a load of bull. It was clear that she just wanted an excuse to boss me around. Well, two could play this game. "Sure," I said with a sunny smile. "What could possibly go wrong?"Amelia's POVWhat was the punishment for murder, again? Because I was seriously considering murdering Jackie. The spoilt bitch had the nerve to treat me like a freaking housemaid. She had claimed that I would be acting as everyone's assistant, yet she was the only one here who was making me serve her.I was currently holding all the clothes she had picked out while she tried on yet another one. She took an unnecessarily long time putting it on, then she took even longer admiring herself in the mirror, only to turn around with a complaint."This outfit isn't right," she said. "I'm going to need a little something to spice it up…"She hummed as she turned in a circle, tapping her bottom lip. Then she brightened up and pointed to a pair of shoes on the topmost part of a shelf."Get me those shoes," she said.I looked up at the shoes, which were out of my reach by the way, then down at the armful of clothes I was holding, then at Jackie's annoying face."How?" I asked flatly. She shrugge
Amelia's POVToday felt like a redo of my meeting with Julian at the eatery that day, so I wanted to make sure it went right. What a bad idea. Now I found myself sitting awkwardly at a table, ten minutes too early and without the man in sight. Even worse, I couldn't decide whether the waitresses were gossiping about me sitting alone despite being obviously dressed up for a date, or if it was just my imagination.I ordered a smoothie and sipped it slowly, trying to calm my fraying nerves. I was this close to doing jumping jacks just to ward off the awkwardness when I saw him walking in.Finally!I composed myself and tried not to look like I had been eating myself up. As he drew closer, it became a struggle not to drool, because damn.It wasn't like I hadn't seen him looking gorgeous before on other occasions. Hell, this man could wear a sack and still look smouldering hot. But seeing him now, I could tell that he had put in some effort. It shouldn't have filled me with warmth, but it
Julian's POVIsabella Domitia was nothing like I had expected. The rumors and the gossip made her sound like a wanton woman, throwing herself at every man within range only to break their hearts instantly and move on to the next. They made her sound shallow and without ambition, like she was good at nothing else but toying with men. If only they knew how wrong they were.I watched as she leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand. She was smiling, but it was not like the smiles women always directed my way. She wasn't looking at me like I was a chunk of meat she wanted to sink her teeth into."Well," she said, her tone light and teasing, "why don't you order, Mister?""What, for you too?" I asked."Why not?" she replied, grinning. "Let's see what you've got."When the food arrived, she peered at it like she had never seen food before."Is there a problem?" I asked. She looked up at me and smiled."I'm just surprised, that's all," she said."About what?""Well, for one," she drew her
Amelia's POVThe next day, the internet was full of pictures of Julian and I during our date. Pictures of us laughing and talking with each other. Who took these pictures, and when? It was most likely the other people who had been in the restaurant with us, or even the staff, that took the pictures and released them online. It was not that I minded. Actually, I liked it.I had been counting on people finding out about our date, because it would make them assume that we were together.I knew a lot of celebrities who had gotten together thanks to a few nudges from the public.I was lying in bed that fine morning, scrolling through the comments with a big smile on my face. There were a few people saying mean things about how I was destined for disappointment and how dare the man-eater have the nerve to go for their precious Julian Lake. I rolled my eyes and ignored them, choosing to focus instead on the ones that were joyfully rooting for our romance and wishing us a happy ending. They w
Jessica's POVJulian and Isabella Domitia. My Julian and Isabella Domitia."The news blew up on the internet this morning," Miriam said.I couldn't take my eyes off the picture.Julian, my Julian, on a date with another woman? That was every type of wrong.I thought he hated women. When the news of him not believing in love anymore was trending on the internet sometime ago, I had been very proud of myself.Of course he could not bring himself to be with any other woman after losing me.Yet here he was, doing just that."Maybe they're not on a date," I said. "The internet has a way of making a big deal out of everything. Maybe they're just getting dinner. People can just have dinner.""Maybe," Miriam echoed behind me.But I knew she didn't believe it. I didn't believe it either. No matter how one looked at it, those two had definitely been on a date.'I thought he swore off dating for the rest of his life,' I thought, clenching the iPad tightly enough to crack it. 'What is so special a
Amelia's POVSomeone needed to call me the heart stealer, because I was definitely nailing this Julian Lake project. To think that we had gone from two strangers in a bar to people who texted each other and spent a long time on calls."Guess who has found the venue for a certain second date?" I said, cradling the phone to my ear as I stirred a cup of hot chocolate."Took you long enough," he replied."Hey!" I said. "At least it's not a cliche place like that restaurant. It takes time to find something perfect, don't you know?""Are we going to the moon, then?" he retorted teasingly."Awesome as that sounds, I'll pass," I replied. "I'm not sure how easy it would be to talk with both our heads covered.""Good point," he said.I could hear the laughter in his voice, and it brought a smile to my face."I'm having chocolate," I said, lifting the cup to my mouth, "would you like some?""Sure. Just pour it through the phone to me," he replied."Let me think about that," I said, tapping my ch
Jessica's POV"This just keeps getting better," I said, keeping my voice light. "Did you find anything else?"Miriam thought for a bit."She doesn't get along with her friends," she said. Now, that sounded sweet. If her friends didn't like her for whatever reason, that would make them perfect for me to use as my minions. Nobody could hurt you worse than a person who used to love you, after all. Since they had been close to her, they would know things about her that other people didn't. They would know her secrets. They would have all the dirt on Isabella Domitia."Explain," I said, snapping my fingers at Miriam. It took me everything to bite back my excitement."Sometime before she went on that date with Mr Lake," Miriam continued, "she barged out of a sleepover being held at one of her friends' home. Jacqueline Kennedy, though she prefers to be known as Jackie. I don't have the details, but they quarrelled about something, and she left in the middle of the night. Later that week, she
Amelia's POVWas I dreaming? I had to be dreaming, because in what world did Ray do things like apologize to me? I hadn't known her for long, but I had known her long enough to understand that she preferred to take on the role of victim in every situation. So for her to be saying this right now… the history books needed to record this moment."Um… Bella?" she called. That was when I realized that I had been staring at her without saying anything."Oh!" I said. "Uh… you said I was right? What was I right about?"That sounded like the safest thing to say at the moment."Well, that Julian Lake doesn't belong to me just because I have a crush on him," she replied. "He's a person capable of making his own choices, so it's not fair for me to claim that you stole him.""Oh," I said. "Okay.""So we're good?" she asked hopefully."Of course," I replied. She was acting weird, yes, but I didn't see the point in dragging out our ridiculous rivalry."Cool," she said, looking genuinely happy."So,
Ray's POVI didn't remember how I got home. I might have ran, but it felt like I had teleported.I literally scrambled out of Julian's car as fast as I could, my heartbeat hammering in my ears, and next I knew, I was in my room locking the doors and windows.I was shaking with fear, and I kept looking around like someone might have followed me home. I felt like somebody had to be watching me, but I was too terrified to look through the window and check.I quickly took out my phone with shaky hands and turned it on. I was about to dial Jackie's number when a notification popped up at the top of my screen. As soon as I looked at it, I screamed, and the phone dropped from my hands. I fell on my knees immediately, scrambling to pick it back up."No, no, no," I whispered, feeling a lump grow in my throat. "This can't be happening."It was me. My face, on the internet, right under the headline: "Who Needs Enemies When You Have Friends Like Rachelle Farmer?"I scrolled through Google, only t
Ray's POVThe plan was to record a tape of Isabella with that man and release it on the internet. Jackie said that the drug was supposed to make her more… cooperative, but I should have known that Jackie was lying again. I was getting the report from this guy now, and I was so disappointed to learn that she was actually fighting him off. That wasn't going to look good for the rumor I was trying to spread.Everyone was supposed to see her being a slut, not resisting like that. What were the odds? The one time I needed her to be a pick me girl, she disappointed. That left me sitting on my bed and editing the video on my laptop. The earlier I sent it out, the earlier everyone could see the sort of person she was. The earlier JULIAN LAKE could see the sort of person she was. Then he would break up with her, and the coast would be clear for me to win his heart. At least that was what Jackie promised me when she came up with this plan. Hopefully, she wasn't lying this time.My hands paused
Amelia's POV"Ouch!" I screamed.I had poked myself way too hard this time, and I sucked my lower lip to check if I had drawn blood."Are you alright?" Julian asked with concern, coming to stand behind me."Maybe?" I replied."Sorry. That must have hurt," he said."You bet it did!" I lamented."I didn't mean to make you panic like that. I'm really sorry," he added."Oh, it's alright," I replied.I couldn't have him thinking that he had done anything wrong, because he hadn't."I just kind of freaked out," I added. "I didn't know what you were going to say. If you were going to cancel the dates or something.""Why would you think that?" he asked."I don't know…" I replied, cringing. "Maybe because of what happened yesterday?"Since he kept on looking confused, I tried to clarify. "I went all slutty on you, remember? I made you uncomfortable, and, um—""Isabella," he cut in sternly.I looked up at him in surprise."You probably don't remember me saying this yesterday," he said, "so I'll
Amelia's POVI was alone when I woke up, and I couldn't remember falling asleep. I did remember being attended to by a number of maids, who had helped keep my body cool and given me medicine that helped me throw up whatever Ray had drugged me with.I knew now that it was Ray who had drugged me. Now that I could think clearly, I remembered that the only thing I had taken was that lemonade she handed to me.I still couldn't believe that she of all people would do something like that. If it had been Jackie, I would have expected it, but Ray?I knew we had our issues, but I never would have imagined that she was that sort of person. Well. We never really knew anyone, did we?I was still lost in thought when I heard a knock on the door. I looked up just in time to see a young maid poke her head in."Miss Domitia?" she said. "Are you awake?"'What does it look like?' I thought. But being harsh to Julian's servants didn't sound like a good idea, so I just said yes."Mr Lake sent me to ask yo
Amelia's POV"Fuck!" the man screamed, cradling his broken nose to staunch the blood pouring from it.He grimaced as he unpeeled himself from the wall, feeling for a lump at the back of his head. He glared at Julian, but knew better than to approach him.Julian didn't even spare him a second glance. He gathered my things, then took off his jacket and put it around me. It was long enough to hang past my knees, and I clutched it gratefully to my body."Can you stand?" he asked, and I was startled by the concern in his voiceI shook my head. All my strength had gone out of me, and I was limp as a ragdoll."Is it okay if I touch you?" he asked.I nodded. For some reason, I knew I could trust him. He lifted me carefully, making sure not to touch any part of my bare skin.I buried my face in his chest as he walked out of the house, carrying me bridal-style.His scent somewhat soothed the fire in me, and I gulped it greedily. Then we were at his car, and he was laying me down on the backseat
Amelia's POVRay walked out, leaving me all alone. I took out my phone and sent a quick text to Julian, telling him I was unwell and needed to be picked up earlier. I hoped he would listen. I had agreed to call, not text, but I really didn't think I could talk right now.I put the phone away and pressed the towel tighter to my forehead, squeezing my eyes shut as I waited for Ray to come back. She probably went to get the aspirin. But I waited and waited, and she didn't come back. My shivering was getting worse, and I dropped the towel to wrap my arms around my body.I was starting to sweat, and my clothes were scratching uncomfortably against my skin. I was itching all over, despite the air conditioning being turned on to full blast. At least the floor was cold, so I took off my dress before I could think about how weird that was, and curled up on the floor wearing only my swimsuit. The cold floor helped a bit, but it still wasn't enough. My mouth was strangely dry and I tried to pus
Amelia's POVBy the time Saturday arrived, I was filled with excitement. Everything was going very well. Not only were Julian and I going on another date, but we had also gotten closer since the first one. Also, Genevieve Lopez and I had become sort of friends, and I was also friendly with the other women who had attended the bachelorette party. She had more or less initiated me into the "friends of Genevieve Lopez" club.I was even given a special invitation to her wedding.I was doing a little dance in front of my mirror as I inspected my outfit for the day.It was a yellow, flowery sundress that matched the yellow ribbon tying me hair up in a ponytail. Underneath it, I was wearing a swimsuit because for our second date, Julian and I were going boating at the Lovers' Lake. It was this sparkling lake with swans on the surface, and pretty much every couple went there at least once. There were all sorts of tales about how it blessed the love of any couple that visited it.It sounded li
