Chapter 1

By the time the sun sank behind Black Fir Forest, Keller had come back alone to apologize. He stood with his head bowed, guilt all over his face. I stopped my mother before she could explode and led him into the backyard, far enough from the main house for the pine fence to keep curious ears away. Whatever I had once felt for him, I needed to put it to rest myself.

I had barely pulled the betrothal contract from my pocket, its pages stamped with both packs' seals, when Keller caught my hand and fastened a cold moonstone bracelet around my wrist. He smiled as if this were the most natural thing in the world. "Evelyn, don't be angry. Consider this my peace offering. Give me one more year. I'll replace the bonding gifts, and the whole North will watch you become Blackwood's primary mate."

So this was what he meant by sweet talk. In his mind, I really was that stupid, that docile, the kind of woman who could be made to wait with a trinket.

I took off the bracelet and stared at him. "What are you going to tell the Council this time? Bad moon phases? Another shortage in Blackwood's stores?"

The excuses were laughable. I had covered for him only because I could not let go of the bond we had shared since childhood. When Keller saw my reddened eyes, he sighed and pulled me into his arms. His scent was so familiar that my wolf quieted for one treacherous moment, and a flicker of hope rose inside me.

A second later, he chuckled above my head. "So you know. Fine, I won't hide it. Some things matter more than others. Lydia has nothing left, but you have your family, your territory, and me. Don't hold this against her."

My tears finally spilled over. Our oath was the lesser thing, the thing that could wait. Only Lydia's tears were urgent. Only she mattered.

Keller wiped a tear from the corner of my eye, impatience creeping into his voice. "Lydia feels awful about this. She even picked out the bracelet for you. She's a good person, Evelyn. Stop making this so difficult."

I was about to hand him the betrothal contract when muffled sobbing drifted from the main house. Keller's expression changed instantly. He let go of me and rushed inside. He moved faster than he had ever moved toward me in three years.

Lydia stood in the middle of the sitting room, pale and fragile, wringing her hands as she begged my forgiveness. By the time I walked in, Keller already had an arm wrapped protectively around her waist. My mother let out a cold laugh. "If you want to paw each other, go back to Blackwood territory. Don't leave your scent all over my home."

Keller stiffened. "Mrs. Hall, watch what you say. Lydia and I are like brother and sister. Nothing more."

I nearly laughed. No brother would postpone his own mating for a sister. No brother would hold her in his arms all night at the winter solstice ball. And no brother would favor her so blatantly that his betrothed had to endure three years of gossip.

My mother snatched the betrothal contract from my hand and flung it at Keller's feet. "Take it. The Halls are done with you and your pack. A man this selfish and dishonest doesn't deserve my daughter."

The pages had barely hit the floor when Lydia stepped on them as if she hadn't even seen them, her heel grinding into both packs' seals.

With tears brimming in her eyes, she protested, "Why would you say something so cruel? If the Hall family hadn't demanded so much, Keller wouldn't have struggled year after year to put the gifts together!"

Both packs' elders had agreed on the amount three years earlier. Blackwood could afford it easily, and the Halls had promised control of Neutral Zone trade routes of equal value in return. Yet Lydia twisted Keller's betrayal into proof of our greed.

My mother took one step toward her. Lydia suddenly clutched the side of her neck and collapsed into Keller's arms.

An old wound from a silver trap had never bothered her on an ordinary day, but now she shook as though silver toxin had flooded her veins.

Keller panicked, called her name over and over, and carried her out without a backward glance.

Rainwater and mud from the entry soaked into the ruined contract. My mother looked at me, worried. I lifted my chin and let the last of my love disappear with Keller's retreating back. "Mom, send for the Lunar Council's matchmaker."

Keller's mind had never been clearer, or his plan more reckless. He told Lydia, "The Fir Valley ceremony doesn't count. I betrayed my betrothed by keeping you at my side. That was my first mistake. Letting myself waver and giving you a guardian bite was my second. Now I'm going to put things right. I'll dissolve the consort oath, register you as a protected member of Blackwood, and find you a suitable pack."Lydia stared at him. "You started this. You came to me first, and you promised me a place. We even slept together after the ceremony. How can you say none of it counts?"Keller did not defend himself. He let her nails rake his cheek. The scratches healed almost at once, but his voice grew raw. "I was a bastard. I'll give you half my personal estate as compensation."Lydia laughed, wild and broken. "You strung Evelyn along for three years, and today you watched her pledge herself to someone else. Do you think sending me away will make her come back?""I can wait." Keller seized the

Warmth spread through me. For three years, I had endured endless scrutiny and even braced myself for the Grey family to question me. But Ronan never asked why I could not hold on to Keller. He never treated me like another man's castoff. He believed me, and he stepped forward to shield me from every cruel word.Ronan turned and smiled at me. When he faced Keller again, his expression went flat. "You wanted everything and valued nothing. Don't blame me for reaching for what you threw away. Since you refuse to leave, stay and watch us seal the oath."The twelve gift trucks rolled through the Silver Fir gates one by one. The notary read each clause aloud. When Ronan and I pressed our thumbprints onto the Lunar Council document, our new mate oath became binding. The marking had not yet taken place, but no one could deny my choice.Keller sat outside the gates the entire time. After the celebration ended, a guard reported that he still refused to leave. I was silent for a moment, then decid

"Evelyn!"Over the chorus of blessings came Keller's ragged scream. He stood outside the gates, disbelief stark on his face, with a few hastily packed gift chests behind him."I brought the bonding gifts this time. I really did. What's wrong with your guards? They're keeping your future mate outside!" His voice shook as he pointed at my gown. "I don't like that Grey Ridge crest. Once my chests are inside, go change. Please?"Even now, he believed I was throwing a tantrum. My mother had had enough. She strode to the gate and slapped him hard across the face. "Don't you dare ruin my daughter's reputation again. You stalled her for thirty-six full moons. Under Lunar Council law, she has every right to choose another mate!"Keller shook his head wildly. "I had a good reason every time."My mother laughed. "Of course you did. The first year, you had to rescue the love of your life from hunters. The second, you had to claw a Grey Ridge warrior for her. The third, you had to buy back her keep

The three of them withdrew to a side room before Milo dared speak. "Miss Hall didn't send the old tokens back to Blackwood. The Silver Fir estate is being prepared for a formal delivery of bonding gifts on November eighteenth."Keller's rigid expression eased at once. He did not know the old tokens had never arrived because I had burned them. He did not ask whose bonding gifts Silver Fir expected. He chose to hear only the answer he wanted.November eighteenth was ten days away. If he left Fir Valley at dawn and gathered the supplies as soon as he reached Blackwood, he could still arrive with his own gifts in time. For tonight, though, Keller looked at the fresh bite on Lydia's neck and the dependence returning to her eyes. Once again, pity smothered reason. He left at first light, desperate to get home, but Lydia insisted on going with him. The journey fell apart almost immediately. The SUV's brake line ruptured halfway there. Someone had already drained the backup vehicle's fuel. Eve

Mara Bennett could never keep news to herself. The people of Fir Valley soon hung pine boughs and moon lanterns, transforming the old chapel for a modest but lively consort ceremony.Even after Keller changed into Blackwood ceremonial clothes, he felt dazed. Everything had happened too fast. None of it had been part of his plan. He kept looking toward the door, terrified that someone from Silver Fir would recognize him and carry the news back to me.Lydia entered in a white ceremonial gown, her face relaxed now that her usual caution had vanished. For one flickering instant, she reminded Keller of the Evelyn he remembered: proud, radiant, and unafraid of anyone's gaze. But ever since Lydia arrived in Blackwood, Evelyn had done nothing but fight with him. In the end, she had looked at him with all the warmth she might give a stranger. The realization sent a chill through him. But celebratory howls already rang through the chapel, and every guest watched expectantly as he approached Lydi

On the road back to Blackwood, Keller passed a bakery in the Neutral Zone. The scent of cinnamon and blackberries drifted into the street, reminding him of my favorite pastry. Only one blackberry cinnamon roll remained in the display case, and the man beside him bought it first. The man was tall, with a quiet intensity in his eyes. Ronan Grey. The year before, Lydia had crossed the Grey Ridge border without permission and a patrol warrior stopped her, suspecting she had stolen route maps. Keller clawed him for laying a hand on her, then gave Grey Ridge two winter hunting grounds earmarked for my bonding gifts as compensation.Ronan held up the paper bag. "You reached the door first, Mr. Blake, but you hesitated. The last roll belongs to the man who actually chose it."The shopkeeper hurried to smooth things over. "The next batch will be ready soon. Give Mr. Grey a little grace. He spent three days above the snow line to find a matched pair of white antlers for the woman he's courting.
