"If she doesn't wake up soon, I think we should call her parents," Elsbeth said softly, kneeling in the grass next to Giavanna's body. She reached out to tuck the suit jacket one of the men had laid over her best friend tighter and looked at the small circle of people surrounding them questioningly. One moment she had been making out with her mate in a dark corner; the next, Grant was dragging her and Dwayne through the back garden, babbling about some argument and Giavanna passing out. "How did this start again?"
"Beta Jared here thought we were laughing at him and started calling her slut and several other insulting terms," Grant explained, pointing his thumb at his brother. "They ended up fighting, and when Sebastian distrupted them, Giavanna collapsed."
Elsbeth's eyes widened in shock, her mind processing the fact that her friend had attacked the Blood Lake Beta. He could have Giavanna banished from their pack, declare a fight to the death, imprisoned - the only thing worse than this was if Giavanna had threatened an Alpha.
"Ok...." Elsbeth huffed slowly, trying to calm her panicked brain. She bowed her head in submission. "Beta Jared, on behalf of the Oak Valley pack, please accept my most sincere apologies. I know you must preserve the honor of your station and your pack by enacting punishment, but I beg you to make your retribution swift and not allow Giavanna to suffer in pain long."
"No need for any of that," a calm, authoritative voice interrupted. Sebastian stepped forward and knelt across from Elsbeth, stroking one of Giavanna's cheeks with the back of his index finger before addressing Elsbeth. "Being the Beta's best friend has some perks, and I've asked for a favor."
"Oh, thank the Moon Goddess," Elsbeth exhaled loudly and smiled at Sebastian. "I'm Elsbeth. Elsbeth Lange."
"Sebastian Thatcher of the Blood Lake pack. I believe that I'm the reason for our current predicament. I suspect Giavanna maybe my soulmate."
Elsbeth froze in shock for a moment, then she squealed excitedly and looked behind her to grin up at Dwayne. "I can't believe she and I both found our mates tonight. Oh my gosh, maybe we can plan a double bonding ceremony!"
Giavanna began to stir, a low groan emanating from her throat. Sebastian curled his palm around her cheek, and she leaned into his hand before mumbling, "Do you have to be so loud, Els?"
The enticing aroma Giavanna had smelled earlier enveloped her body, making her feel safe and warm. Her eyes fluttered open, and she found herself gazing into those striking cornflower blue eyes again. She unconsciously sucked in a gulp of air, both shocked and pleased to see him smile. Sebastian's thumb stroked back and forth along her face before asking, "May I help you sit up?""No, thank you. I can do it myself." Grimacing, Giavanna raised herself into a sitting position, resting her face in her hands.
A warm hand began to rub circles on her lower back while she massaged her temples. Her heartbeat was pounding through her skull, though every inhale of her mate's scent helped to dull the pain.
"Grant, why don't you and Dwayne get us some water and maybe a little something to eat for Giavanna?" Sebastian suggested, carefully monitoring Giavanna.
"You got it." Dwayne nodded and set off towards the ballroom, Grant following closely behind.
Giavanna lowered her hands to her lap and took a closer look at her new mate. His dark brown hair was shaggy and rather unkempt, reaching his shoulders. A pair of oversized ears charmingly stuck out from the sides of his head, at odds with his prominent hook nose. It was hard to tell from his current position, though he looked to be about her height, maybe a few inches taller. Giavanna noted he had the complete opposite build of other males his age, but she didn't care. He was her mate."Now, let us get a good look at that gouge on your cheek," Sebastian murmured. His fingers delicately tilted her chin, and his eyes narrowed at the injury. "Jared, please hand me a tin of healing ointment. After you apologize, of course."
The large man slunk forward, and his head bowed in contrition before announcing somberly, "I apologize. I have disgraced myself and the Blood Lake pack by speaking in such a disrespectful way to a female. I also apologize for attacking you after you were merely defending your honor." He reached into his suit jacket and drew forth a small metal container. After handing it to Sebastian, Jared retreated backward quickly.
Giavanna was taken aback by how passive Jared was behaving. She was certain she'd at least be thrown in a jail cell for her defiance. Elsbeth leaned over and whispered in her ear, "You're safe this time. Sebastian pulled the best friend card."
"Thank you," Giavanna said softly, offering Sebastian a shy smile. "My pleasure," he grinned back.
Unscrewing the lid of the tin, Sebastian dipped a ring finger in the light green ointment, softly dabbing it into her wound. Giavanna hissed as the salve stung her face. "Sorry, it'll only hurt for a moment and then heal up straight away," he explained. "Don't want that beautiful face to have a scar now."
"Ooooh, where did you get this stuff?" Elsbeth asked, reaching for the tin. He passed it over, ignoring Jared's low growl.
"Secret pack recipe. You can keep that batch, but my lips are sealed about the contents," Sebastian winked. He took a red handkerchief from his black jacket pocket and gingerly wiped the excess medicine from Giavanna's face. "All better. Now no one will be the wiser about what happened here tonight."
"What about him?" Giavanna tilted her head towards Jared. His face had already begun to slowly heal, thanks to his werewolf capabilities, though her nails had done worse damage than she initially thought.
"I'll be fine. I deserve it for my behavior," the Beta insisted.
Giavanna was about to start arguing with the man when she heard Grant call, "Hope you guys are hungry. We got a little bit of everything."
Attempting to stand on her own, a pair of hands cupped Giavanna's elbows from behind and easily lifted her into a standing position. She blushed at the chivalrous gesture and quietly whispered another "thank you" to her mate. Sebastian merely smiled again and guided her towards the pavilion, the others following closely behind.
Giavanna leaned back, sinking her hands into the warm sand lining the edges of the lake that lay before her. She had made the short hike through the woods that butted against her family's backyard and was happy to find the beach deserted. With the cool breeze whipping across the water and flurry of mateship move preparations throughout the pack, she shouldn't have been surprised. She needed this time to herself to untangle all the thoughts and worries that were rattling around her brain. It had been five days since the evening of the ball; five days since she had stayed up all night with Sebastian, flirting and laughing over donuts and coffee at a 24-hour diner. Five days since she met the love of her life. Supposedly. Her mind was in a constant battle with itself, swinging from lust, guilt, contentment, and anger in an endless loop. Giavanna thought she knew what to expect with the soulmate bond. A longing to be near your partner, feeling as if a part of yourself was missin
Sebastian's P.O.V. "I'm getting really tired of these damn Mateship Balls," Jared growled as he gazed in the mirror, styling his hair. "All these ridiculous traditions and rules our pack follows are unnecessary." With a bemused smirk, Sebastian continued adjusting his tie and asked, "How do you think I feel? Are you finally understanding why I think the Leadership Council positions shouldn't be lifetime appointments anymore? Bunch of 80 and 90 something-year-olds demanding things be accomplished their way every time? I appreciate their knowledge and experience, but not the outdated social norms." "Plus, they all die around the same age, and then you're stuck with inexperienced pups making life-altering decisions until they get older and wise up!" Grant shouted from the bathroom. "Another good point," Sebastian called back, tugging down the back of his ill-fitting suit jacket. "Hey, little brother, we might actually have a chance tonight wi
Sebastian's P.O.V. "I can't do this anymore," Sebastian groaned, his arm draped across his eyes in a feeble attempt to block any light from adding to the searing pain in his head. The concealment potions weren't as effective as his magicians had implied, and due to the excessive amounts he had to consume to even spend a small amount of time with Giavanna, his body was rebelling against him. "Do you even have any potion left? With the way you've been guzzling those bottles, you should only have a few left," Grant said, bringing a glass of water and a bottle of aspirin for his bed-ridden Alpha. "They sent you with a three-week supply, and you used it up in a few days. That can't be good for you." "Yeah, did you get any response about why it's not working correctly?" Jared plugged in another heatin
Giavanna P.O.V. The morning of Sebastian's departure, Giavanna rose early, quickly changed into workout gear, brushed her hair and teeth, then headed down the stairs to grab an apple from the kitchen before meeting Grant in her driveway. He had texted her last night about tagging along to her training session. Though she had initially wanted to blow him off, Giavanna decided, or more accurately, Elsbeth decided, it might be a good opportunity to get some information out of him about Blood Lake pack. "Morning! How we doing today?" Grant chirped while Giavanna slipped into the passenger seat of his rental car. "Fine," she grunted, concentrating on her apple as she tried to ignore the delicious smell of Sebastian that lingered in the vehicle. "Good, good," the man replied, noticing the scowl on her face as she chewed. Her eyes were slightly swollen and bloodshot. It confirmed what Grant had already guessed; she had spent the previous evening crying. Inha
Sebastian's P.O.V. Sebastian stared out the window of the private jet, the clouds surrounding the aircraft matching his grim mood. When his face had begun morphing after his reckless kiss with Giavanna, he had raced back to the hotel, unleashing his fury and dispair on the room fixtures as Jared and Grant watched helplessly. The look of devastation on Giavanna's face was etched into his mind. As long as he lived and regardless of what happened in their relationship moving forward, Sebastian knew he'd never be able to fully atone for his behavior. His next biggest concern was the effectiveness of the pack's magicians. As long as he could remember, they had never failed a task before. Not when Sebastian's parents led the pack and according to his research, not during his grandparents' reign either. The Leadership Council had already been made aware of the situation and were demanding all thirteen magicians be ready to gather as soon as Sebastian was back within the pac
Giavanna's P.O.V. Sitting on her front porch stairs, Giavanna tapped her feet impatiently as she waited for Grant to arrive. Her two large suitcases rested on the sidewalk, most of the items Sebastian had suggested packing tucked away neatly inside, as well as a navy messenger bag crammed full with her journal and novels to read. Her mind had just begun wondering if this was all a waste of time when Grant hurriedly pulled up to the curb. "Sorry!" He called as he jumped out of the car, rushing to get her bags in the car. "I got held up in line at the coffee shop." Spying two steaming beverages in the car drink holder through the window, Giavanna smiled and replied, "That's a perfectly acceptable excuse." Slamming the trunk shut, Grant looked around puzzled. "The rest of your stuff inside then?" "No, that's it. Well, besides my carry-on." She gestured to her satchel and entered the vehicle. "It's a private jet, and you
Sebastian's P.O.V. Sebastian bolted upright, the sharp rapping on his office door rousing him from his unplanned desk nap. "Yeah, come in." He yawned and began rolling his stiff neck and shoulder muscles, silently cursing himself out for nodding off. Between the intense longing for his mate and the stress of arguing with Leadership Council members, the past two nights had resulted in little actual sleep. "Excuse me, Sebastian..." Dale began as he peeked his head through the doorway. His eyes took in the wrinkled gray button-down shirt, messy hair, and bloodshot eyes of his Alpha. Suppressing a grimace, he proceeded to read off his clipboard. "We received word that Miss Giavanna has safely boarded the jet and will be in flight soon. She was, and I quote, 'thrilled' with the itinerary. Grant has confirmed that she is uncomfortable with excessive displays of wealth, so Meadow and Izzy thought the Pink Moon suite would be the best fit for her." Running a ha
Giavanna's P.O.V.Giavanna stood frozen in the passenger entrance of the Blood Lake Alpha's private jet; her eyes were round saucers as she gazed around the cabin. She had expected to see some plush leather chairs, tables, and maybe a couch. The space before her looked more akin to a full-service day spa than an aircraft."Move it," Grant instructed as he came up behind Giavanna and gently nudged her through the threshold. "We have to keep on sche..." His voice trailed off once he noticed the interior of the jet. "Alice, what the fuck happened here?"Alice reappeared from behind a curtain a pair of slippers and a robe in her hands. "Our Alpha was feeling rather guilty about requiring so much of Sebastian's attention this past week and wanted to make sure Miss Giavanna felt properly welcomed by the Blood Lake pack." She put the items down on a table decorated with an extravagant flower arrangement and several pillar candles. With a hand upon her elbow
