Sebastian's P.O.V.
"I'm getting really tired of these damn Mateship Balls," Jared growled as he gazed in the mirror, styling his hair. "All these ridiculous traditions and rules our pack follows are unnecessary."With a bemused smirk, Sebastian continued adjusting his tie and asked, "How do you think I feel? Are you finally understanding why I think the Leadership Council positions shouldn't be lifetime appointments anymore? Bunch of 80 and 90 something-year-olds demanding things be accomplished their way every time? I appreciate their knowledge and experience, but not the outdated social norms.""Plus, they all die around the same age, and then you're stuck with inexperienced pups making life-altering decisions until they get older and wise up!" Grant shouted from the bathroom."Another good point," Sebastian called back, tugging down the back of his ill-fitting suit jacket.
"Hey, little brother, we might actually have a chance tonight with some girls now that Sebastian's been uglified," Jared teased, grasping his best friend's shoulders and giving them a shake.
Grant emerged from the bathroom and tried to stifle his laughter at the pair of men before him, failing miserably. "Sorry, Sebastian," he wheezed, "but this is too hilarious! Just let me get it out of my system now before we leave. You are so tiny!"
"No, no, it's ok. I look as ridiculous as I feel. Our pack has partnered with magic users for centuries, and now that others are beginning to do so, the Leadership Council is convinced rival packs will try to infiltrate us by any means necessary. I have to admit, they did a pretty great job with these concealment spells and potions."
Sebastian had shrunk a foot, now standing at 5 foot, 7 inches. His muscles had melted away from the potion, leaving him awkward and gangly. The large ears and nose gave him a distinctly homely appearance, and Sebastian was grateful at least his eyes had remained the same. It gave him some semblance of normalcy when gazing at himself in the mirror.
"What's the point of all these changes?" Grant asked, poking one of Sebastian's small arms.
"No one will suspect me to be the Blood Lake Alpha since I look like the runt of the litter. They figure the only person who would waste time getting to know me would be my soulmate if they are even here. I don't mind the physical changes so much; it's having my Alpha energy suppressed that's bothering me."
Eyes widening, Grant asked, "Does this mean you'd have to obey Jared if he gave you a command?"
"Yes, though tempting as it may be, Jared wouldn't be stupid enough to try it except in an emergency," Sebastian frowned as his Beta's face broke into a large grin.
"Come on, can't I do one little command? Just this once?" Jared begged. He rubbed his hands together gleefully before exclaiming, "I promise it will be something small and not insulting."
"Ugh, only because you're my best friend and just this once," Sebastian acquiesced, grimacing in anticipation.
"I'll go extra easy on you since you're such a puny little fellow now," Jared laughed. "Go hold the door open for Grant and me."
Sebastian stood his ground for a few moments to see if the potion really did mute his Alpha capabilities. To his surprise, for every second he didn't obey the Beta's demand, the more his body began to shake and ache. He crossed the room quickly and held the door to the hotel room open for the others. As the brothers walked past him, Sebastian complained, "This is going to be a long night."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Sebastian sat under the gazebo, watching two she-wolves throw themselves at Jared while they completely ignored his presence. While being disregarded was a new feeling for him, Sebastian found he immensely enjoyed it. There was no pressure to perform as the Alpha, no stress of being the perfect representative of his pack. While Jared had always relished the pawing and flirting that seemed to accompany any powerful pack position, Sebastian was delighted for a break. No one stroking his biceps or placing their hand on his thigh as they asked him question after question was refreshing.
Two high-pitched screams followed by the pair of women running away as fast as their high heels would allow brought Sebastian's attention back to the present. The look of disgust on Jared's face told him everything he needed to know. "Finally got around to telling them you're part of the Blood Lake pack?"
"Yes. Things were going really well with the blonde, and I figured she might be up for a little fun later if she didn't have a negative reaction," Jared growled. "Clearly she's not."
"Sorry -" Sebastian began before he heard the familiar loud laughter of Grant and a she-wolf echoing through the garden. Jared's face grew crimson before bellowing out, "Shut the fuck up, Grant! I'm coming for your ass and whatever whore you're fucking around with!"
Lurching towards his brother, Jared's eyes zeroed in on the girl and Grant sitting on a bench together. The pair stood up as Jared lumbered closer, Grant stepping in front of the she-wolf, his arms crossed as he called out, "Jared, you need to apologize to my friend. Right now."
A look of terror crossed Grant's face as his new friend raced past him to face the Beta head-on.
With a cocky smirk, Jared remarked, "Aren't you a feisty little slut."
"Call me a derogatory name one more time and see what happens," the she-wolf responded pleasantly.
"Only a worthless cunt would be interested in hanging out with my little brother," Jared shot back hotly.
Sebastian had not anticipated Grant's friend to talk back to his intimidating Beta. She was relatively short-statured and had bucked Mateship Ball tradition by wearing a sexy fitted suit instead of a formal ballgown. Her stance appeared casual as she stared up at Jared, but Sebastian could tell from her positioning that she had fighter training. His curiosity was piqued, and he wanted to learn more about this she-wolf. As Sebastian walked towards his Beta with the intention of defusing the situation, the woman took a swipe at Jared's face, her hand moving incredibly swiftly.
Fingers transforming into claws, Jared screamed, "How dare you touch me, you little bitch!" He lashed out a finger and drug a deep gash into one of the woman's cheeks. Sebastian hurried closer, watching as she retaliated with a kick to Jared's knee.
Just as Sebastian was readying himself to intervene, he froze for a moment. His nostrils filled with the scent of sun-warmed soil, lilacs, and impending rain. His feet felt rooted in place and his breathing quickened. He had finally found her. This petite, courageous woman was his mate.
Jared's deafening yell shook Sebastian out of his trance. After stumbling backward from the force of the kick, Jared attempted to seize his opponent's arm only to be yanked back by his Alpha.
"What the fuck, Sebastian?" Jared seethed. "She insulted our pack and me!"
Sebastian ignored his friend and looked over at Grant, who had wisely pulled the she-wolf further away from Jared, focused on stopping the blood streaming from her cheek. Seeing her nose rapidly twitch several times as Grant spoke to her, Sebastian knew she had scented him, too. Her head turned in his direction, and for a brief, delicious minute, he was able to stare into her chestnut brown eyes before her eyes closed, and her knees buckled.
Sebastian's P.O.V. "I can't do this anymore," Sebastian groaned, his arm draped across his eyes in a feeble attempt to block any light from adding to the searing pain in his head. The concealment potions weren't as effective as his magicians had implied, and due to the excessive amounts he had to consume to even spend a small amount of time with Giavanna, his body was rebelling against him. "Do you even have any potion left? With the way you've been guzzling those bottles, you should only have a few left," Grant said, bringing a glass of water and a bottle of aspirin for his bed-ridden Alpha. "They sent you with a three-week supply, and you used it up in a few days. That can't be good for you." "Yeah, did you get any response about why it's not working correctly?" Jared plugged in another heatin
Giavanna P.O.V. The morning of Sebastian's departure, Giavanna rose early, quickly changed into workout gear, brushed her hair and teeth, then headed down the stairs to grab an apple from the kitchen before meeting Grant in her driveway. He had texted her last night about tagging along to her training session. Though she had initially wanted to blow him off, Giavanna decided, or more accurately, Elsbeth decided, it might be a good opportunity to get some information out of him about Blood Lake pack. "Morning! How we doing today?" Grant chirped while Giavanna slipped into the passenger seat of his rental car. "Fine," she grunted, concentrating on her apple as she tried to ignore the delicious smell of Sebastian that lingered in the vehicle. "Good, good," the man replied, noticing the scowl on her face as she chewed. Her eyes were slightly swollen and bloodshot. It confirmed what Grant had already guessed; she had spent the previous evening crying. Inha
Sebastian's P.O.V. Sebastian stared out the window of the private jet, the clouds surrounding the aircraft matching his grim mood. When his face had begun morphing after his reckless kiss with Giavanna, he had raced back to the hotel, unleashing his fury and dispair on the room fixtures as Jared and Grant watched helplessly. The look of devastation on Giavanna's face was etched into his mind. As long as he lived and regardless of what happened in their relationship moving forward, Sebastian knew he'd never be able to fully atone for his behavior. His next biggest concern was the effectiveness of the pack's magicians. As long as he could remember, they had never failed a task before. Not when Sebastian's parents led the pack and according to his research, not during his grandparents' reign either. The Leadership Council had already been made aware of the situation and were demanding all thirteen magicians be ready to gather as soon as Sebastian was back within the pac
Giavanna's P.O.V. Sitting on her front porch stairs, Giavanna tapped her feet impatiently as she waited for Grant to arrive. Her two large suitcases rested on the sidewalk, most of the items Sebastian had suggested packing tucked away neatly inside, as well as a navy messenger bag crammed full with her journal and novels to read. Her mind had just begun wondering if this was all a waste of time when Grant hurriedly pulled up to the curb. "Sorry!" He called as he jumped out of the car, rushing to get her bags in the car. "I got held up in line at the coffee shop." Spying two steaming beverages in the car drink holder through the window, Giavanna smiled and replied, "That's a perfectly acceptable excuse." Slamming the trunk shut, Grant looked around puzzled. "The rest of your stuff inside then?" "No, that's it. Well, besides my carry-on." She gestured to her satchel and entered the vehicle. "It's a private jet, and you
Sebastian's P.O.V. Sebastian bolted upright, the sharp rapping on his office door rousing him from his unplanned desk nap. "Yeah, come in." He yawned and began rolling his stiff neck and shoulder muscles, silently cursing himself out for nodding off. Between the intense longing for his mate and the stress of arguing with Leadership Council members, the past two nights had resulted in little actual sleep. "Excuse me, Sebastian..." Dale began as he peeked his head through the doorway. His eyes took in the wrinkled gray button-down shirt, messy hair, and bloodshot eyes of his Alpha. Suppressing a grimace, he proceeded to read off his clipboard. "We received word that Miss Giavanna has safely boarded the jet and will be in flight soon. She was, and I quote, 'thrilled' with the itinerary. Grant has confirmed that she is uncomfortable with excessive displays of wealth, so Meadow and Izzy thought the Pink Moon suite would be the best fit for her." Running a ha
Giavanna's P.O.V.Giavanna stood frozen in the passenger entrance of the Blood Lake Alpha's private jet; her eyes were round saucers as she gazed around the cabin. She had expected to see some plush leather chairs, tables, and maybe a couch. The space before her looked more akin to a full-service day spa than an aircraft."Move it," Grant instructed as he came up behind Giavanna and gently nudged her through the threshold. "We have to keep on sche..." His voice trailed off once he noticed the interior of the jet. "Alice, what the fuck happened here?"Alice reappeared from behind a curtain a pair of slippers and a robe in her hands. "Our Alpha was feeling rather guilty about requiring so much of Sebastian's attention this past week and wanted to make sure Miss Giavanna felt properly welcomed by the Blood Lake pack." She put the items down on a table decorated with an extravagant flower arrangement and several pillar candles. With a hand upon her elbow
Sebastian's P.O.V."Mother, let me go in first," Sebastian instructed, lightly guiding her by the shoulders to move behind him. "Jared and Dad are both shouting, and that doesn't bode well.""Of course, dear, but you know your father would never hurt me." Calista stepped a few paces back and looked expectantly at her son.Sebastian chuckled. "He's not who I'm worried about. Just give me a few minutes to clear the way in for you." Giving the double doors that led into the Leadership Council chambers a hard yank, the Alpha walked into a riotous calamity.Orion stood at one end of a long wooden table, his claw-tipped fingers leaving deep furrows in the dark wood. He was snarling, flecks of spit dripping from the corners of his mouth as he screamed obscenities. Beta Jared had his powerful arms wrapped around the older man's shoulders and chest, restraining him from behind. From Jared's stony expression, Sebastian could tell that this was not
Giavanna's POV"You ok back there?" Grant asked from the driver's seat of the black SUV as it sped down the tree-lined road. "Shouldn't be too much longer until we arrive at the packhouse." "Huh?" Giavanna mumbled. She was tucked into the backseat of the vehicle, covered in a cozy blanket, and had been reflecting on the flight out before Grant's interruption. Gemma and Alice could not have been better company on the jet. Though reluctant at first, both women utilized the plane's amenities at Giavanna's insistence. She had particularly enjoyed giving Grant a manicure finished up with sparkly black polish. "Just checking, you need anything? Bathroom, drink, snack?" Grant took a left turn into the parking lot of a gas station and pulled into a spot near the shop entrance. "I need to use the facilities."She was about to say no when she glanced out the window. Before her was the largest, cleanest, most pristine gas station she'd ever seen. No chipping
