Sebastian's P.O.V.

"I'm getting really tired of these damn Mateship Balls," Jared growled as he gazed in the mirror, styling his hair. "All these ridiculous traditions and rules our pack follows are unnecessary."

With a bemused smirk, Sebastian continued adjusting his tie and asked, "How do you think I feel? Are you finally understanding why I think the Leadership Council positions shouldn't be lifetime appointments anymore? Bunch of 80 and 90 something-year-olds demanding things be accomplished their way every time? I appreciate their knowledge and experience, but not the outdated social norms."

"Plus, they all die around the same age, and then you're stuck with inexperienced pups making life-altering decisions until they get older and wise up!" Grant shouted from the bathroom.

"Another good point," Sebastian called back, tugging down the back of his ill-fitting suit jacket.

"Hey, little brother, we might actually have a chance tonight with some girls now that Sebastian's been uglified," Jared teased, grasping his best friend's shoulders and giving them a shake.

Grant emerged from the bathroom and tried to stifle his laughter at the pair of men before him, failing miserably. "Sorry, Sebastian," he wheezed, "but this is too hilarious! Just let me get it out of my system now before we leave. You are so tiny!"

"No, no, it's ok. I look as ridiculous as I feel. Our pack has partnered with magic users for centuries, and now that others are beginning to do so, the Leadership Council is convinced rival packs will try to infiltrate us by any means necessary. I have to admit, they did a pretty great job with these concealment spells and potions."

Sebastian had shrunk a foot, now standing at 5 foot, 7 inches. His muscles had melted away from the potion, leaving him awkward and gangly. The large ears and nose gave him a distinctly homely appearance, and Sebastian was grateful at least his eyes had remained the same. It gave him some semblance of normalcy when gazing at himself in the mirror.

"What's the point of all these changes?" Grant asked, poking one of Sebastian's small arms.

"No one will suspect me to be the Blood Lake Alpha since I look like the runt of the litter. They figure the only person who would waste time getting to know me would be my soulmate if they are even here. I don't mind the physical changes so much; it's having my Alpha energy suppressed that's bothering me."

Eyes widening, Grant asked, "Does this mean you'd have to obey Jared if he gave you a command?"

"Yes, though tempting as it may be, Jared wouldn't be stupid enough to try it except in an emergency," Sebastian frowned as his Beta's face broke into a large grin.

"Come on, can't I do one little command? Just this once?" Jared begged. He rubbed his hands together gleefully before exclaiming, "I promise it will be something small and not insulting."

"Ugh, only because you're my best friend and just this once," Sebastian acquiesced, grimacing in anticipation.

"I'll go extra easy on you since you're such a puny little fellow now," Jared laughed. "Go hold the door open for Grant and me."

Sebastian stood his ground for a few moments to see if the potion really did mute his Alpha capabilities. To his surprise, for every second he didn't obey the Beta's demand, the more his body began to shake and ache. He crossed the room quickly and held the door to the hotel room open for the others. As the brothers walked past him, Sebastian complained, "This is going to be a long night."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sebastian sat under the gazebo, watching two she-wolves throw themselves at Jared while they completely ignored his presence. While being disregarded was a new feeling for him, Sebastian found he immensely enjoyed it. There was no pressure to perform as the Alpha, no stress of being the perfect representative of his pack. While Jared had always relished the pawing and flirting that seemed to accompany any powerful pack position, Sebastian was delighted for a break. No one stroking his biceps or placing their hand on his thigh as they asked him question after question was refreshing.

Two high-pitched screams followed by the pair of women running away as fast as their high heels would allow brought Sebastian's attention back to the present. The look of disgust on Jared's face told him everything he needed to know. "Finally got around to telling them you're part of the Blood Lake pack?"

"Yes. Things were going really well with the blonde, and I figured she might be up for a little fun later if she didn't have a negative reaction," Jared growled. "Clearly she's not."

"Sorry -" Sebastian began before he heard the familiar loud laughter of Grant and a she-wolf echoing through the garden. Jared's face grew crimson before bellowing out, "Shut the fuck up, Grant! I'm coming for your ass and whatever whore you're fucking around with!"

Lurching towards his brother, Jared's eyes zeroed in on the girl and Grant sitting on a bench together. The pair stood up as Jared lumbered closer, Grant stepping in front of the she-wolf, his arms crossed as he called out, "Jared, you need to apologize to my friend. Right now."

A look of terror crossed Grant's face as his new friend raced past him to face the Beta head-on.

With a cocky smirk, Jared remarked, "Aren't you a feisty little slut."

"Call me a derogatory name one more time and see what happens," the she-wolf responded pleasantly.

"Only a worthless cunt would be interested in hanging out with my little brother," Jared shot back hotly.

Sebastian had not anticipated Grant's friend to talk back to his intimidating Beta. She was relatively short-statured and had bucked Mateship Ball tradition by wearing a sexy fitted suit instead of a formal ballgown. Her stance appeared casual as she stared up at Jared, but Sebastian could tell from her positioning that she had fighter training. His curiosity was piqued, and he wanted to learn more about this she-wolf. As Sebastian walked towards his Beta with the intention of defusing the situation, the woman took a swipe at Jared's face, her hand moving incredibly swiftly.

Fingers transforming into claws, Jared screamed, "How dare you touch me, you little bitch!" He lashed out a finger and drug a deep gash into one of the woman's cheeks. Sebastian hurried closer, watching as she retaliated with a kick to Jared's knee.

Just as Sebastian was readying himself to intervene, he froze for a moment. His nostrils filled with the scent of sun-warmed soil, lilacs, and impending rain. His feet felt rooted in place and his breathing quickened. He had finally found her. This petite, courageous woman was his mate.

Jared's deafening yell shook Sebastian out of his trance. After stumbling backward from the force of the kick, Jared attempted to seize his opponent's arm only to be yanked back by his Alpha.

"What the fuck, Sebastian?" Jared seethed. "She insulted our pack and me!"

Sebastian ignored his friend and looked over at Grant, who had wisely pulled the she-wolf further away from Jared, focused on stopping the blood streaming from her cheek. Seeing her nose rapidly twitch several times as Grant spoke to her, Sebastian knew she had scented him, too. Her head turned in his direction, and for a brief, delicious minute, he was able to stare into her chestnut brown eyes before her eyes closed, and her knees buckled.

"Darling, that is quite a lot of worry you've been carrying around, and then to pile on your distrust of the Leadership Council. Well, that's a very heavy load to bear," Luna Calista consoled, concern etched on her face. Giavanna and Luna Calista had sequestered themselves up in the restricted access library with Sebastian loitering in the hallway, nervously pacing. Giavanna had told the Luna everything, from the events of the Mateship Ball until that morning's conversation regarding the Leadership Council. It had felt like a heavy weight was lifted off her chest with every sentence spoken. "You said to come to you if I had any concerns. My original intent was to just speak about the Leadership Council, and then everything else came pouring out," Giavanna sighed, looking at the wooden tabletop between them. "Something in my bones tells me I can fully trust you." "You can, Giavanna. I swear on the Moon Goddess you can trust me, but I need you to kn

Sebastian's POV "What are you two doing here?" Sebastian hissed angrily, his scowl deepening as he looked from Jared to Grant. The brothers had been milling around outside Giavanna's suite when the kitchen staff had arrived with food, and she had insisted the pair join them for breakfast. Sebastian had pretended to welcome their presence until Giavanna had slipped away to get dressed for the day. "Whoa, Seb. You need to dial that attitude back," Jared said calmly, holding his hands up in a placating manner. "Something bad happen between you two?" "Sorry," Sebastian groaned. He roughly ran his fingers through his hair and sank back into the sofa cushions. "Things were going really well with Giavanna this morning, and breakfast interrupted us." "Ha! No wonder you're so crabby." Grant leaned forward in his chair to whisper. "The new potion holding up for you?" A soft smile played over Sebastian's lips as he g

  • Of Love and Lies   Chapter Twenty

Giavanna POV Giavanna groaned, the firm knocking on the door to her suite waking her from a deep sleep. Grabbing onto a bedpost, she pulled herself up and trudged to the hallway door. Turning in early last night was a good idea in theory until she had crawled under the covers and tried to sleep. Then all the events from the day flooded her mind and kept her up until the wee hours of the morning. Yawning, she opened the door to find Sebastian dressed in black jeans and a black fishermen's sweater, his face lighting up as she squinted up at him groggily. "Good morning," he greeted happily. "May I come in?" Seeing him put together and functioning made Giavanna remember that she had bedhead, puffy eyes, and rank morning breath. Thanks to her lack of sleep, she cared even less than usual about her appearance and blinked at him blearily before responding. "Mmmmm hmmm," she grunted, stepping aside to allow him entry. Sebastian closed the

Sebastian's POV Sebastian wasn't quite sure what was happening. He had mentally prepared himself to be a stalworth shield for Giavanna against his father's less than modern opinions all through dinner, ready to deflect a snide comment or mocking gesture at a moment's notice. The current turn of events just solidified how much he had to learn about his mate. Jared and Grant had greeted Giavanna warmly when they entered the dining area, with smiles and tight hugs before his mother took Giavanna by the elbow to introduce her to his father. "Orion, darling, allow me to introduce Giavanna Sperino of the Oak Valley pack," Calista explained as their guest bowed her head in reverence. "Giavanna, this is my husband, Alpha Orion." Her eyes lowered and neck exposed, Giavanna greeted the leader formally. "Alpha Orion of the Blood Lake pack, I thank you for your permission to enter your lands. I agree to conduct myself in a manner that is worthy of this priv

Giavanna's POV Giavanna scampered away from a gobsmacked Sebastian, blushing deeply as she took off down the hall. She hadn't meant to be so brazen, the comment just slipped out, but she couldn't suppress the giggles that rang out as she rounded a corner. "Hey, you're not going to be able to find the dining hall without me!" Sebastian followed her through the corridor, his laughter echoing noisily. "You know full well that isn't true!" Giavanna called back loudly, though she did pause in the hallway, figuring it'd be considered rude to arrive at dinner without her host. Sebastian raced around the corner and skidded to a stop just before he would have slammed into Giavanna. He growled at her playfully and slipped an arm around her waist, pulling her to his chest. "That wasn't very polite of you, teasing me and running away like that." Smiling softly, Giavanna ran her fingers through his hair in a futile attempt to tame h

Sebastian's POVSebastian settled more comfortably into the plaid loveseat, his arms spread across the back ledge of the furniture, with a smile on his face that beamed more every time he heard Giavanna burst into a new fit of laughter in the suite next to his. His wolf had been purring non-stop since his mate's arrival, and it was a feeling he certainly didn't want to end.The rest of the packhouse tour had gone well, with Giavanna asking thoughtful questions that Sebastian was only too happy to expound upon and ample opportunities for stolen kisses. They had agreed upon a 90-minute break to allow them time to rest and change for dinner with the Alpha and Beta's families. And as much as he had wanted to remain with her, he knew she didn't need him hovering around while contacting people back home. His attempt to distract himself with a nap had been an instant failure, so he put on his evening attire and waited for the clock to tick down. His mind wa

Giavanna's POV"How many more check-points are we going to have to get through?" Giavanna asked, peering out the car window. They were on the very edge of the Blood Lake pack's official city limits, having driven through three guard stations where overly courteous sentries greeted them and directed them to proceed. "That's it unless they created a new one while I was gone," Grant joked. "Privacy and security have always been important to the Blood Lake alphas." He slowed his speed as they entered the bustling town. Giavanna's stomach began to churn in a combination of nervousness and excitement. She was hoping Sebastian would be able to keep his word and concentrate on her and their budding relationship rather than constantly working, though she didn't have much faith if the lack of texts or calls from him the past few days was any indication. But as she began to see the size of the pack land and the number of members their alpha had to manage, Giavanna began un

Sebastian's POV"Oh, I do not care for this one bit. You look so frail and sickly.""Thank you, Mother," Sebastian sighed. She poked his significantly reduced bicep and grimaced.Giavanna was scheduled to arrive in thirty nerve-wracking minutes. His stomach in knots, Sebastian tried to calm himself by making a mental list of their schedule. For her first evening, the pair would have a semi-formal dinner with the Keller and Kemp families, after allowing her time to settle in her rooms and a tour of the packhouse. He had wanted to do more, but Meadow had insisted adding anything else would probably be too overwhelming. "Besides," Izzy had giggled, "scheduling anything more wouldn't allow any alone time for the two of you." Sebastian's ears grew red again, thinking about how vividly he had blushed at her remark.Alone time with Giavanna had occupied his mind since the moment he boarded the plane home. The brief kiss they shared left a smoldering

Giavanna's POV"You ok back there?" Grant asked from the driver's seat of the black SUV as it sped down the tree-lined road. "Shouldn't be too much longer until we arrive at the packhouse." "Huh?" Giavanna mumbled. She was tucked into the backseat of the vehicle, covered in a cozy blanket, and had been reflecting on the flight out before Grant's interruption. Gemma and Alice could not have been better company on the jet. Though reluctant at first, both women utilized the plane's amenities at Giavanna's insistence. She had particularly enjoyed giving Grant a manicure finished up with sparkly black polish. "Just checking, you need anything? Bathroom, drink, snack?" Grant took a left turn into the parking lot of a gas station and pulled into a spot near the shop entrance. "I need to use the facilities."She was about to say no when she glanced out the window. Before her was the largest, cleanest, most pristine gas station she'd ever seen. No chipping
