𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐭

"What are you doing here?"

The question came out before I could even think about it. I was still standing there with my hand on the luggage handle, staring at Alfie like he had somehow appeared out of nowhere.

The last person I expected to see when I got home was him, and judging by the relaxed look on his face, he didn't seem to understand why his presence had caught me so off guard.

Alfie only shrugged, his expression calm as ever.

"Your mother practically dragged me here."

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐭I wasn't in the best mood that morning, and unfortunately, the team was about to find that out.Practice had barely started when I found myself getting irritated over the smallest mistakes. A missed pass, a poorly timed shot, or someone taking too long to get back into position was enough to earn them a sharp comment from me.“Brian, how many times do I have to tell you to watch your positioning? You're leaving too much space between you and the defence.”Brian nodded and quickly moved back into position.“Again!”I blew my whistle, watching as they repeated the drill. I folded my arms, trying to concentrate on what was happening on the ice, but my mind kept wandering.I couldn't stop thinking about Malakai. His face kept appearing in my thoughts, especially the way he had looked at me that morning. I could still hear him asking me to look into his eyes and tell him I didn't love him. Then there was his confession, those three words I hadn't been expecting.I love you.

𝑴𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒌𝒂𝒊My heart felt like it had been broken into a million pieces, so why wasn't I ready to give up?I watched Beckett walk away until he disappeared from my sight, still hoping he would turn around. Maybe he would change his mind, come back and tell me that he hadn't meant any of those words. Maybe he would realise how ridiculous this whole situation was and finally explain what had gotten into him.But he didn't.It was pathetic.I knew it was pathetic to keep holding on to someone who had made it clear that he no longer wanted me. I should have known when to stop, especially after the way he had treated me. Yet, all I could think about was chasing after him, holding him and refusing to let him go.I wanted him to look at me the way he used to. I wanted to hear him tease me, complain about my behaviour and pretend he wasn't enjoying my company. I wanted all those little things I had taken for granted because I never thought he would suddenly decide he didn't want them any

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐭“Beckett, can we talk?”I had barely stepped out of my car when I heard Malakai's voice behind me. I paused, my hand still resting on the car door, before turning to see him walking towards me from the other side of the parking lot.Of all the people I expected to see this morning, he was the last.I had spent most of the drive to the rink preparing myself for the possibility of running into him, but now that it was happening, I wished I had taken another route. Maybe I should have arrived earlier or waited a little longer before coming out of the house. Anything that would have saved me from this conversation.“It's Coach Rivera to you, and if it's not about your coming back to the ice, then there's nothing to talk about.”I shut my car door and started walking towards the entrance. I hated how cold I sounded, but I had to keep reminding myself why I was doing this. It wasn't because I had stopped caring about Malakai. It was because I couldn't allow things to continu

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐭It was probably for the best. That was what I kept telling myself as I walked back to the couch and dropped onto it. I didn't bother turning on the television or checking my phone. I simply lay down, pulled the blanket over myself and stared at the ceiling. It was probably for the best.I repeated those words in my head, hoping they would eventually make me feel better, but all I could see was Malakai's face when I told him we were breaking up.His eyes had been filled with tears.I closed mine, but that only made the image clearer.I had never made anyone cry before. Not like that. I had always been the one on the receiving end, the one left trying to understand what had gone wrong and wondering why someone I loved could walk away so easily.I cried when Alfie broke up with me because he was moving to another city. I remembered how I had tried to convince him that we could make things work, that distance didn't have to mean the end of us. He had listened, but his mind

𝑴𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒌𝒂𝒊"The team won't be the same without you here."I laughed as I chugged down my beer, placing the empty glass on the table."Don't make it sound like I'm dying.""Well, you're not going to be playing with us anytime soon," Brian said."Unfortunately." I shrugged. "But I'll still be coming around to watch practice. I need to make sure you idiots aren't doing anything stupid while I'm away.""Who are you calling idiots?" he asked."Everyone at this table."The guys laughed, and I reached for another glass. It had been a while since I had spent time with everyone outside the rink, and I hadn't realised how much I missed it until tonight. They had decided to get together to celebrate my discharge from the hospital, although I was beginning to suspect that most of them were more interested in drinking than celebrating me.Still, I wasn't complaining.I wasn't happy about being away from hockey, but I had to accept that I wouldn't be returning to the ice anytime soon. The doc

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐭It was already evening when I finally decided to go home.I had spent most of the afternoon trying to concentrate on work, but my mind kept drifting back to Malakai and the little arrangement we had made earlier. He had promised to come over after school, and I had caught myself checking the time more than once, wondering whether he was already on his way or still dealing with whatever had kept him busy.I had also spent a ridiculous amount of time smiling at absolutely nothing, which was becoming a problem. If Genevieve had been around, she would have noticed immediately and probably wouldn't have stopped teasing me for the rest of the week. Thankfully, she had left earlier, and I had been able to finish most of the paperwork without anyone questioning my sudden good mood.By the time I shut down my computer, the school was considerably quieter.I collected my things, slipped my phone into my pocket and locked my office before heading towards the parking lot.“Becke
