Chapter 3

Author: Zoey
The piece sitting right in front of me, on the other hand, was nothing more than a cheap promotional gift awarded to those who spent three thousand dollars or more.

There was no display box, no leather care kit, and not even the genuine product’s exclusive tag or certificate of authenticity. Anyone could tell at a single glance that it was a worthless freebie.

“Forget it,” I said, pushing it back toward Stella. “This is far too extravagant. You should save it for someone who truly deserves it.”

Stella froze for a second, clearly caught off guard by my response.

Throughout our five years together, no matter how many arguments we had, I had never acted so cold toward her. In the past, whenever we fought, as long as her tone softened a little, I would automatically yield and make peace with her.

Back then, I always believed that love could weather any storm. Looking back now, I realized I had overestimated this relationship all along.

“What’s that supposed to mean, Daniel?”

Just as Stella was about to stand up and grab my hand, the doorbell rang.

Outside, the rain was pouring. Eric stood in the doorway, soaked to the bone and clutching a paper bag.

“Dr. Sloan, the pipes at my apartment burst, and I have nowhere else to go. Could I crash here for the night?” he begged. “I won’t be any trouble at all. Just any spot to sleep is fine.”

Out of habit, he looked right past me, his eyes locked entirely on Stella. The moment he got a subtle nod of approval from her, he walked straight to the kitchen and pulled out my brand-new mug.

Stella had picked them out for me as a birthday gift last year. I usually couldn’t even bear to use it myself.

“Put that down!” I pointed directly at the mug in Eric’s hand. “That’s mine. Put that down right now!”

“What is wrong with you?”

Stella slapped my pointing hand away and stepped in front of Eric to shield him.

“It’s pouring outside, and his apartment is flooded. Can you stop being so mean? It’s just a mug, not some priceless artifact! What’s the harm in letting him use it for a bit?”

A sharp, throbbing pain shot through my injured arm where she had struck me.

Feigning timidity, Eric put down the mug. “Please don’t be mad, Daniel. It’s my fault for not knowing my place. I’ll put it back right now.”

Though his words sounded meek, he didn’t look hesitant at all. Pointing straight at the master bedroom, he spoke as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

“Dr. Sloan, I’ll take this room tonight then. My hands are injured so I’m sensitive to the cold, and this room gets the best light.”

As he spoke, he pulled a whole bag of juices and stuffed them into the fridge.

“This batch of juice is fresh off the production line, way better than the last batch. Dr. Sloan, help yourself whenever you want. Don’t be shy.”

Then, he casually walked into the bedroom and pulled the silk duvet over him. His movements were so practiced, as if this place had long been his own home.

I looked up at Stella. “How many times has this happened?”

She dodged my gaze.

“You know I have diabetes, and that’s why we never keep any sugary snacks or drinks in this house. And why does he have free access to our home?”

During every late night when I was working overtime and couldn’t come home…

Stella pinched the bridge of her nose, looking helpless.

“That’s enough, Daniel! Eric is just a kid. What could happen between a kid and me? He just joined the department and isn’t familiar with any of the procedures or equipment. I stayed up all night training him, and by the time it got late, I didn’t feel right making him travel back alone.

“Besides, just because you don’t consume sugar yourself doesn’t mean everyone else has to be banned from it, right? You’re being way too unreasonable!”

I stared at her in utter disbelief.

In the past, when my blood sugar spiked and caused me to pass out, she had held my hand and sworn that from then on, no sugary food would ever enter our home again, and that my health would always come first. Now, she stood by and let Eric fill the entire fridge with bottles of juice.

“Alright, that’s enough,” Stella said.

To smooth things over and lighten the mood, she reached out to place a comforting hand on my shoulder, but I shifted aside, avoiding her touch completely.

“Stella, let’s break up.”

“Come back with me. I swear I’ll never neglect you again. I’ll put you first in everything, and we’ll never be apart again, alright?”Even then, she still didn’t get it. I wasn’t leaving just because of Eric. It was also because of her attitude toward me and our relationship.“Stella.”She stared straight at me, her eyes red and teary.“I feel like not having me in your life doesn’t change anything for you. You’re just used to having me around. You don’t actually need me–”“No! That’s not true!” Before I could finish speaking, Stella cut me off. “I can’t live without you. I can’t just lose five years of our lives together. You’re the one I want, Daniel… Please believe me.”She grabbed my hand, pleading relentlessly. Just like last time, she begged me not to leave and not to give up on our five years together. However, was I supposed to compromise myself and stay trapped in an endless spiral of mental exhaustion just for the sake of those five years?“This isn’t what I want eithe

Stella’s expression shifted from anger to shame. She was mortified.I gently raised my hand, signaling my mother and Autumn to head inside and wait for me first. I wanted to face her alone.Stella clutched the gift bag in her arms tightly. Her voice quavered as she pleaded with me, asking, “Daniel, why did you insist on running away? Was it because of those photos Eric sent to you? I can explain everything! He took all of those in secret. Nothing happened between us. We’re innocent!“It was all a calculated scheme on his part from the very beginning. He deliberately drove a wedge between us! I’ve never liked him! Daniel–”She tried to step forward, but I held up a hand to stop her.“That night, I broke up with you loud and clear. I didn’t run away. Besides, we have nothing to do with each other anymore. Please don’t come bothering me again. As for you and Eric, I have zero interest in hearing about it. Whatever happens between you two is your own business. There’s no need for me t

My clothes, my toiletries, the small trinkets I had placed on the desk, and everything that had once been filled with my presence had vanished. Stella’s entire body went stiff, and her heart felt as if it were being torn apart alive. When she saw our shared memories discarded in the bin, she finally realized that this time, I wasn’t throwing a tantrum or giving her the silent treatment. I was truly and completely done with her. On my second day back in my home city, my mother used her connections to help me return to my job as a journalist. Back on the front lines of interviewing—chasing news, writing articles, and rushing topics—a busy, fulfilling life filled all my free time. The daily hustle and bustle also dulled all the pain. Everything regarding Stella had long been pushed to the back of my mind.It wasn’t until half a month later that my mother set me up on a blind date. She said the other party was a fellow journalist, gentle in character, and with matching values, making

Stella shook Eric’s arm off so hard that it sent Eric crashing onto the floor.Under normal circumstances, Stella would’ve rushed over immediately to help him up. She would’ve taken him to the hospital without a second thought, using her status as an attending surgeon to pull strings in the emergency room.Yet now, Stella didn’t even reach a hand out. Instead, she pointed a finger right at Eric’s nose, snapping a fierce warning.“Whatever is going on between Daniel and me is strictly between us! It has nothing to do with you! Don’t you dare try to meddle in our relationship, and don’t assume what we have is so fragile!”Eric burst out laughing, and tears welled in his eyes. There was a subtle mockery in his voice.“Is that so? But he said he doesn’t want you anymore. He booked a flight all by himself and left.”Stella froze and instinctively pulled out her phone. The screen was flooded with over a hundred unread messages. Standing out among them was a notification from the landl

I didn’t bother blocking Stella right away. After all, her belongings were still back at the house.I was afraid that if she lost or misplaced anything later on, she’d use the missing items as an excuse to pester and hassle me. So, I simply turned off my phone and boarded the plane. At that exact moment, Stella was helping Eric clean his kitchen. Her parents had divorced when she was young, so she had lived on her own from an early age. She was well-versed in all kinds of household chores and daily trivialities. When we first got together, she was just as attentive. She would clean the kitchen, tidy the house, and inspect every corner of the place week after week.Especially whenever she had to go on a business trip, she would always clean the house inside out. She was terrified that if she weren’t around, cleaning up alone would be too tiring for me.“The kitchen hood has too much grease on it, but it’s no big deal,” she said. “I’ll just clean it out in a bit.”Stella was bent d

“What did you say?”I stared straight into Stella’s eyes, my gaze cold. “I said we’re breaking up.”Stella’s eyes widened slightly, as if she couldn’t believe that someone like me, who had always been gentle and accommodating, would be so firm in my decision.Beside her, Eric instantly panicked and apologized nervously. “I’m so sorry, Daniel. It’s all my fault. I was being ignorant. Please don’t be angry. I’ll leave right now.”He crouched on the floor in a flurry to tie his soaked shoelaces. His fingers trembled so hard that he couldn’t manage the knot even after several tries, and that was all it took to make Stella lose her patience.“Daniel! Haven’t you had enough of throwing fits? It’s pouring outside. Where is he supposed to go? Do you really have to embarrass everyone just to feel satisfied?“Every time, you threaten to break up with me. Isn’t that just your way of forcing me to back down? All these baseless suspicions and picking on others… You genuinely disgust me.”Ste
