Gianna-/

He didn't speak to me after he walked away from me that night.

We just saw each other and walked past without saying a word. I honestly couldn't wait for the weekend to be over so I could get back to work.

Not that I enjoyed, but because I knew he wouldn't be able to avoid talking to me then.

I was preparing dinner when he walked into the kitchen. He didn't spare me a glance and just grabbed water from the fridge.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't pained. I was making his favorite and he didn't even bother to acknowledge it.

I clenched my jaw, stirring the pasta sauce with more force than necessary. The silence was suffocating, the tension in the air thick enough to cut with a knife. If he wanted to act like I was invisible, fine. Two could play that game.

But damn it, it hurt.

I wasn’t sure what frustrated me more—the way he was ignoring me or the way my chest tightened despite everything.

Maxmillian twisted the cap off his water bottle, taking a slow sip before finally, final

/-Eric-/I should’ve known better than to expect a clean ride to booking. The cruiser veered off the main road twenty minutes ago, and we’d been cruising through what looked like the industrial back end of the city since. Broken warehouses. Abandoned loading docks. Not a streetlight in sight.Detective Lane hadn't said a word. Neither had the rookie. The only sound was the hum of the tires against the cracked asphalt. Then the car stopped.“Out,” Lane said, his voice flat.I cocked my head. “Don’t we usually do mugshots at the station?”He opened the door. “This isn’t about processing.”That got my attention. The rookie stepped out first, clearly jittery. Lane came around and opened my door himself. Rough hands yanked me out, and before I could say another word, I was slammed chest-first against the hood of the cruiser.“Is this the part where you tell me I’ve got the right to remain silent?” I sneered.Lane leaned in close, breath hot against my ear. “No. This is the part where we re

/–Eric–/I should have known it was a trap. From the moment my contact went silent. No calls, no texts, I felt it. That low, crawling chill in the pit of my stomach that told me something had shifted. Something was wrong.Still, I played it cool. Sat in my office like I was untouchable. Like I hadn’t just lost half my crew in a midnight raid. Like Maxmillian hadn’t just outplayed me.But inside, I was boiling.Betrayal.It reeked. I didn’t need confirmation to know where the leak came from—Piper. I should’ve cut her off months ago. But I’d underestimated her. Again. She’d always been smart, but I thought I had her scared enough to stay in line.Apparently not.I slammed the glass of whiskey down on the table hard enough to crack it, the sharp ring echoing through the room. The docks were gone. The cargo was gone. My men—arrested, dead, or in hiding. It was only a matter of time now.My phone buzzed. An unknown number.I answered, not saying a word.“Eric Mercer.” The voice was calm, s

/–Gianna–/I stood on the balcony, watching them leave. Maxmillian led the way, calm and unreadable. Dante and Piper followed, keeping just enough space between them to show that trust was still shaky. The house felt too quiet, like the kind of silence that sinks into your skin.I wasn’t going with them. That had been understood from the start.Maxmillian never asked me to join, and I didn’t offer. This life,.his world, wasn’t mine. Even though I’d been dragged into it, even though I bore the scars, I had drawn a boundary. Tonight, I stayed behind it.Still, I gripped the balcony railing tightly, as if letting go would somehow make everything fall apart. I watched until the black SUVs disappeared into the night. The fight was out there. But the waiting—waiting was harder.I paced the halls. Checked my phone again and again. Time felt slow and heavy. Midnight passed, but sleep didn’t come. Somewhere, Maxmillian was facing danger. Either walking into Eric’s trap—or ending it once and fo

/-Gianna-/We had visitors but I never could have imagined it would be Dante and Piper. They knew they were in Maxmillian's bad books. Not even bad books, they were on the verge of being sent to jail because of what they did to me. It must have lots of guts. Yes they apologised to me, but Maxmillan never said he has forgiven them amd I still feel a little bitterness in my heart towards them but what can I say?“Gianna,” Piper stood up the minute she saw me. I couldn't tell if the smile on her face was genuine or not. “It's good to see you, Piper,” i returned the smile even though I felt nothing. “What brings you here?”My gaze shifted to Eric who was a big reluctant to acknowledge me. I almost rolled my eyes. Like I cared about him! He has always been bitter since he became an ex. I didn't see why he was angry since he was the one who sent me away to begin with. It was probably because I found Maxmillan, his uncle, who was way better than him.“What brings you here, Dante?” I aske

/-Gianna-/The silence that fell between us was thick and brittle. Maxmillan stood frozen, his hand halfway between brushing my cheek and pulling away entirely. His brows were drawn low, lips parted like he wanted to deny it, but couldn’t quite find the words.“She’s my sister,” he finally said, voice low, but it sounded more like he was trying to convince himself.“Is she?” I asked gently, searching his face. “Because I don’t think that’s how she sees you.”Maxmillan backed away slightly, rising to his feet. He ran a hand through his hair and let out a sharp breath. “God, I should’ve seen it. The way she clung to me… the way she acted every time I mentioned you. I thought it was just protective, overbearing, annoying, even. But love?”He turned to pace, his long strides carrying him toward the fireplace. His silhouette was cast in flickering amber light, his shoulders tense.“I remember,” he said after a moment, “when we were younger… she used to tell me we didn’t need anyone else. T

/-Gianna-/I had just finished brushing my hair when I noticed the slip of gold-trimmed paper under the door. My brows furrowed as I bent to pick it up, flipping it over to read the soft, almost delicate handwriting.> Gianna,Meet me at the west wing hallway by the wine cellar. I need to talk to you in private. Come alone. —M.My fingers trembled slightly as I stared at the letter. Maxmillan? It had to be him… right? The “M” felt like a clue,. And yet something about it didn’t sit right. He hadn’t said anything about meeting tonight. And the west wing? That part of the house was practically deserted since the renovation started. Why didn't he just text me though? What was the point of the letter?Still, curiosity and worry gripped me. What if it was something important? What if he needed me? Better still, a surprise maybe? That was the only thing that made sense since there was nothing he could possibly be doing at an abandoned site. I hesitated a moment longer before slipping on my
