Chapter 5

last update Last Updated: 2021-08-18 22:46:00

Five...Four...Three...Two...One.

The moment the countdown reached one, the four ballista guns launched their missiles into the air, the projectiles flying with a grace and accuracy that could only have been AI-guided. They soared through the air for some seconds before beginning their descent right towards Adolf.

"You may want to take cover for this one," Dennis said to Megan who immediately huddled closer as he pressed the screen of his wristwatch and commanded, "Blast protection," and immediately, what looked like a force field covered the both of them.

With bated breaths, Megan watched Adolf stare down the missiles coming towards him like he could just will them away with his mind if he wanted; and just as they were a few metres from him, he wrapped his wings around himself in such a way that no part of his body was left exposed to the eye.

The first missile collided explosively into the wings to knock him into the ground, then the second followed, and the third, and the fourth. The explosions were so fierce that they created a crack in the solid ground, and even in the safety of the force field, Megan and Dennis still felt the aftershocks when they passed through.

The shocks were the only things that would result from the missiles strikes though, as Megan herself soon discovered to her utmost surprise when she looked up to see Adolf unfurl his wings after the attack and he was totally unhurt. Natural wings definitely couldn't do that, she thought.

Adolf smiled unabashedly as he floated back into the air. He looked towards where Megan and Dennis stood and winked at them like they could see it- they didn't, by the way- before charging forward to meet the guns with a smirk that seemed to say, "My turn."

"Drones, activate attack sequence," the AI commanded when it sensed Adolf move and the drones immediately swarmed around him in a pattern that made it seemly difficult for him to move in any direction without coming against more than two of them at a time.

"Open fire," it commanded and they did.

Adolf held a wing in front of himself as a shield to deflect the bullet and used the other to guide himself towards the ground in a glide.

Watching the attack, Megan observed that whenever Adolf's wings were hit, the contact spark would morph into a rainbow wave that travelled through the length of the wings to lodge at their edges. Okay, there was definitely nothing natural about those wings, she concluded without a doubt.

"What exactly are Adolf's wings?" she asked Dennis.

"Bionics," he replied. "Heavy titanium plates infused with a defensive-offensive technology that even the Army hasn't begun to conceive of its existence yet. They're trillions of dollars in worth and thousands of tons in weight."

And somehow, a shadowy division of an even more shadowy covert department of the UN decided to give them to a teenager to play with, Megan added in her head, the thought perplexing her.

But speaking of which, she asked, "How in the world is he able to carry the wings then if they weigh as much as you said?"

"His real power, of course." He pointed up for her to watch.

Megan looked just then and saw that after a while of the drone assault, Adolf's wings had begun to glow very bright as the rainbow waves weren't just at the edges now but running erratic throughout the surfaces; and then, he released them.

The release had actually started in his muscles. Adolf had tensed them in such a way that they somehow created a visible strain on the wings themselves, causing all the waves to congregate at one point at the tip. Then, he relaxed and with an explosion, the waves shot out of the wings into the drones, visibly frying them on the spot.

EMP, Megan realized. The wings were equipped with an EMP which the shots by the drones fuelled until they reached a critical point when Adolf then shot them back at the drones. Wow! Sci-fi knowledge to the rescue, she marvelled at her own quick deduction of the process.

But EMP aside, Megan realised that the "real power" Dennis was talking about hadn't been showcased yet, at least now in a manner that she understood. Fortunately, she didn't have to wait very long for a proper explanation.

As soon as the drones were down, Adolf started towards the ballista guns just as he had thought to do initially. Sensing his approach, the guns began to pulsate with a blue light blinking rhythmically at their sides, and Megan knew that the AI was prepping them for another missile assault.

However, the assault wasn't to succeed as Adolf got to the first ballista gun closest to him a few seconds before it could be ready and yanked it effortlessly off the pillars like it weighed nothing to hurl it into the second closest to him; the two ending up in a fiery heap.

Superstrength, she realised then what Dennis had been trying to make her understand before. Adolf's real power was his incredible strength that made him able to carry the wings the size of a very large truck and use them in whatever way he wanted.

Megan saw him with new eyes as she watched him slice through the third ballista gun with his wings on his way to the fourth.

The AI seemed to learn just then that with the current sequence of action, Adolf's victory would surely be guaranteed. So, it made a move that Megan was sure as hell was pure improvisation.

Thing is, on seeing him come, the target system on the last ballista gun locked in on him and released a pulse energy that although didn't do any damage was still enough to knock him several yards backwards, gifting it those precious few seconds it needed to complete the missile reload.

Then, the AI made a public announcement like the first time. "Missile will launch in..."

With the countdown started, Megan had thought that Adolf would choose to shield himself like she had seen him do the first time, but what she saw was a determined stance as he stretched his wings as far as it would let him, even forcing the very edges to their fullest length; and then, he flapped.

The force generated by the sheer mass of the wings was so much that it propelled him forwards with a loud whoosh, the tech in the wings going to work to give him more focus in his thrust towards the gun.

The countdown continued. Five...Four...Three...Two...One.

The moment the missile launched, Adolf brought his right wing in front of him to meet the missile and its explosion; and still the force was enough to keep him going forward regardless. He made the fist as he approached the ballista gun and hit it, splitting it into two right down the middle.

It was then that the AI finally rested. "All opponents destroyed. Training sequence completed," it announced and the ground around the space opened up to admit the drones and the pillars with the guns.

"So, how did I do?" Adolf asked when he landed in front of Megan and Dennis, his wings furling to retract into a thin silver line in his back that had made her thought they disappeared before.

Well, that explained the bionics, she thought and smiled to herself.

"You did great, Adolf," Dennis remarked and went for a fist bump with him.

But he turned to face Megan too, the expression on his face seemly expectant of a response. He was eager to hear from her, it dawned on her, although why she couldn't fathom why.

"You did great, Adolf," she said anyway, smiling and nodding her approval.

Truth be told, Megan had no idea in what way she was supposed to be assessing him, nor was she an expert to, obviously. But he wanted her appraisal so she gave it.

"By the way Adolf, I have to say you're quite strong for a teenager, for anyone for that matter," she said soon after, going for what was actually on her mind since she witnessed what he did. "How are you that strong?"

"Oh, that's because-"

Whatever response Adolf wanted to give died in his throat when he looked to Dennis and met a stern glare. "This isn't the place nor the time," he said, the statement undoubtedly for Megan.

Not one to be bullied into silence though, Megan made to start an argument on where and when exactly the right place and time would be, but no sooner had she poised her lips to form the words that dust was suddenly rose around her and she felt a momentary electrical tingle on her skin as something whizzed past her.

"Looks like you guys started the party without me," a voice came from the dust and she looked up to see a girl also around the same age as Jay and Adolf.

The girl was mixed race; Japanese-American, if Megan's deduction was correct. She styled her hair in a purple bob and wore a black leather jacket and jeans with black leather boots. Her whole outfit was adorned from top to sole with bead-like crystals that shimmered a shade of purple just like her hair's whenever she moved.

So, there was the next part of the tour, Megan knew immediately: a speedster.

"Before the equipment explodes, there are some things we need to take care of," Megan said after the group had settled. "First is the people. "Jay, I need you to trigger every fire alarm in this building and maybe some in the nearby buildings too, as many as you can manage. Can you?"He nodded affirmative. Putting his hands to the ground, he pushed against it and a yellow energy passed through the floor and up the walls on all sides. Not so long after, the sound of a fire alarm reached the room they were, the pitch increasing as more joined in from farther away; and soon, the pounding of footsteps could be heard from above as people seemed to move in droves."Next, Rick, I need you to reach as many people as you can over the phone. Tell them that the alarm isn't a drill. They must evacuate the building as quickly as they can and shouldn't stay anywhere near the area to observe. If they ask why...""Don't worry, I know how to deal with them." He patted her arm in understanding and she

Every beep from the equipment resounded heavily through the room, almost as if it was heralding the end of the world; and it might as well be to Megan.Nothing had gone right since the beginning of that day. Nothing had gone right since the beginning of that mission. Nothing had gone right perhaps even longer before that; and she feared the culmination of it all was soon to come in a catastrophe that neither her nor Olympus – or even the world for that matter – would be able to withstand.Another beep and she looked to Ricardo who was now bent down in front of the equipment with his brows furrowed as he concentrated all that he had in trying to figure it out before the worst they all feared happened. "Can you shut down the self-destruction?" she asked."I'm afraid not, Megan." He ran his hands through his hair in a frustrated motion for the umpteenth time in that moment. "I'm locked out of the system and nothing I do is meeting any response." He swiped his hand over the glass panel an

It wasn't Item 13. How could it not be Item 13?A million questions raced through Megan's head as she stood in front of the scene before her, the questions flying by so fast that she could neither hold them for more than a second nor ascertain their logic in that space of time. However, the crux of the query remained, what in the world was the containment box holding if not Item 13?"What is it?" she asked Ricardo who was standing closest to it at that time.Inside the containment box was a transparent glass structure. It held a metal rod seemly floating in space- probably by some electromagnetic force, Megan deduced from what little her science knowledge had grown since she took the job at Olympus. Some strange-looking, octagon-shaped objects were attached to the floating rod; so small that she couldn't make out what materials they were actually made of, and so finely arranged that they almost looked like one whole piece of work if not for the tiny spaces in between them which was abl

That couldn't be happening. Megan looked around herself in disbelief. How could that be happening? She asked again. Before the group stepped into that theatre, she was sure they were in charge of the scenario: Dennis had stopped the mole from getting word out of Olympus to the enemy, he and Arthur were on said mole's trail, she, Ricardo and the kids uncovered the location of the Doomsday beacon, they were all going to stop Martin for good before he had the chance to use Item 13.But somehow he had managed to best them again, Megan realised. How?"Surprised?" Martin's question snapped her out of her thoughts to see the smug smile on his face. "You should be. You're playing against the best after all.""This isn't a game, Martin," she returned. "Real lives are at stake here; and if you deploy Item 13, I'm afraid even you may lose yours.""Well Miss Months, that's a risk I'm willing to take."Martin took a big, exaggerated bow before signalling to his men and they opened fire.Kei caught

Shanghai, China Ricardo accelerated the SUV through the highway like a mad man, swishing in and out of traffic without concern for the law or the motorists screaming at him. "Is the signal locked yet?!" he shouted to the teenagers in the back seat with their eyes intently fixed on a tablet in their middle. "Still working on it," Adolf returned. "Work faster!" "Hey, dude," Kei looked up, pissed, "you wrote the program. If you find it unsatisfactory, then change it." She shoved the tablet in front of him and would have caused quite the commotion if Megan hadn't grabbed it from her hands. "Enough!" She cut out whatever retort Ricardo had in mind with a look. "We're

The director's office was still in a state of tempered chaos when Megan arrived back with Ricardo in tow. Dennis remained in front of the monitor-map with a glare like that would somehow force the red dots to converge on to one stable point, but Kei and Jay had now joined Adolf, who was obviously at wit's end with the tracking, by the computer-desk. Arthur just watched everything on by the side in concerned silence. The door slid open to admit the duo in and the others turned to acknowledge their presence; Arthur and Dennis leaving their spots to meet them."Heard you're in quite the pickle, Director," Ricardo started with an almost taunting smirk on his face, but he sobered when he saw the state of the monitor-map. "What can I do to help?""The Doomsday beacon was activated a
