The silence felt like a death threat to Hazel.

Ella stood there, scroll in hand, radiating quiet triumph. She’d played this perfectly. Public. Legal. Irreversible.

If Alaric marked Hazel now, he’d be admitting the bond existed before the council approved it. That was grounds for a vote of no confidence.

If he didn’t,Hazel would be exiled before sunset.

Hazel swallowed hard. Her throat was dry, her palms slick.

Claimed or exiled.

Two words. One cage.

She wouldn’t beg. She wouldn’t ru

Three months later Three months later, snow was gone. Bridge was fixed. New stone, no loose one. Hazel made them leave one loose stone on purpose, over riverbank, marking tunnel entrance, so no one forgot. Cellar was clean. Not because slaves cleaned it. Because Ella cleaned it. Every day, on knees, no gloves, scrubbing wall where Mara carved. Greta said Ella cried first week, threw brush second week, then went quiet third week and started asking about herbs. Now Ella knew feverfew from night thorn. Knew river root fresh from dry. Greta said she might be good healer one day, if she kept scrubbing. Hazel was in Luna room, but not on bed. On floor, by fire, sorting herbs. Belly bigger now — just a little, but enough dress didn't fit same. Silver dress hung in wardrobe, she wore simple green dress now, pockets full of seeds. She didn't know she was pregnant until Greta told her — "You smell different, Luna, and you eat honey by spoon now," — and Hazel stared at Greta and said "What

Hazel woke to blinding sunlight through shutters, snow piled so high it covered half of window. Cold but clear. Wind stopped. Alaric was already awake, sitting on edge of bed, pulling on pants. Shirt still off, scar from poison tea still red on chest, but eyes clear. "Where you going?" Hazel mumbled, tangled in furs, Aurella still asleep in cot. "To bring Luna to hall," he said, looking back at her. "If you can walk." "I can walk," Hazel said, pushing furs off. Her knees still purple, but not bleeding. Hands wrapped, but better. Alaric watched her stand in bloody dress, bare feet, hair mess, mother's box still on table. "You are not wearing that dress to your coronation," he said. Hazel looked down at dress. "What else do I have?" she said. "One patched dress on dresser. That's it." Alaric opened wardrobe in Luna room. Wardrobe Hazel thought was empty. It wasn't. Inside it was a dress. Not white. Silver. Like moonlight, like his eyes. Fur trim, but not heavy. Simple. No jewe

Storm locked packhouse. Shutters banging. Snow piling against doors. Guards said no one in or out till morning, not even council. They slept in hall downstairs on furs, grumbling. Luna room was only warm room upstairs because fire never stopped. Lucia kept feeding it, testing every log like logs could be poisoned, which made Hazel laugh for first time in two days. Alaric didn't laugh. He didn't let Hazel go. He sat on bed, back against headboard. Hazel between his legs, her back to his chest, his arms around her, her blue feet tucked under his thighs to warm them. He had wrapped her hands with clean cloth after healer put salve on cuts from ice. Aurella was finally asleep in small cot they brought to Luna room. Dominic said "She's Luna pup now too, she stays near Luna," and no one argued. Fire crackled. Wind howled. Whole packhouse quiet except wind. Alaric's chin rested on Hazel's head. He smelled her hair. "You haven't slept in two days," he said low. "You haven't either,"

Alaric collapsed again an hour after he woke. Hazel was in Luna room. He'd carried her up himself set her on bed, said "Don't move," then went to wash blood off face in basin. He fell mid-wash. Basin cracked. Water everywhere. Hazel caught him before head hit stone. "ALARIC!" Dominic kicked door, Greta ran. Greta checked pulse. Faster now, but uneven. Like heart skipping. "Poison is still inside," Greta said, hands shaking. "First cure wasn't enough. Dose was too big. We need more river root. Fresh. Not dried from your box. Fresh from riverbank where it grows under ice. That's what Mara used for toddler Alpha, fresh, not dry. Stronger." "I'll go," Hazel said, standing. Knees still bleeding but wrapped. "No," Alaric said from floor, eyes half-open, hand grabbing her ankle weak. "No, stay.” "You will die if I stay," Hazel said, crouching, touching his face. "I need twenty minutes." Alaric tried to grip tighter. Couldn't. Fingers slipped. "Dominic, watch him," Hazel said. "If

Cellar was dark after guards left. No torch. They took torch because council said prisoners don't get light. Hazel sat against wall where her mother carved. Straw poking legs. Cold seeping up from stone into bones. Dress still bloody from Alaric's lip. Next cell, Ella cried. Not pretty crying. Sniffing, hiccuping. "Shut up," Hazel said quietly. Not mean. Just tired. Ella sniffed louder. "You, you pulled me. My nose" "Your nose was already ugly," Hazel said. She didn't even look over. That shut Ella up for minute. Hazel's fingers traced mother's carving again. MARA WAS HERE. I DID NOT DO IT. Under it, recipe carved small. She already knew recipe by heart feverfew, river root, honey. But under recipe, even smaller, almost worn away, more letters. Hazel brushed straw away, leaned close. No light, but fingers could read carving if eyes couldn't. M... TUNNEL... BEHIND LOOSE STONE... NORTH... Tunnel. Greta said Vincent built hidden ways. But mother found one first. Hazel felt

Alaric didn't wake up for nine hours. Hazel didn't leave floor. They tried to move him to bed, Dominic and two guards but Hazel said no. She sat on cold floor, his head in lap, furs pulled from bed around them, Aurella curled against her back asleep again because she cried herself out. Greta kept checking pulse. Slow but there. Poison fighting antidote. Like twenty-two years ago. "He'll wake," Greta said. "Mara's cure works. It worked on him as pup. It works now. But he needs time." Hazel nodded. Didn't speak. Her mouth still tasted bitter almond and feverfew. Outside Luna room, hall was full. Whispers. Council arguing. Guards arguing. Maids crying. Then knock. Hard. Not Lucia knock. Hazel knew that knock. Council knock. Dominic opened door just crack. Gray-beard council man stood there with four guards. Not packhouse guards. Council guards. Old wolves who served Vincent. "Move," gray-beard said to Dominic. Dominic didn't move. "Alpha is unconscious. Luna is healing him. No

Alaric’s POV “Come with me,” I said, already walking ahead. Hazel followed quickly, keeping pace without a word. We walked through the hallways, the sound of our footsteps echoing. She stayed just behind me, quiet. “Why were you late?” I asked, my eyes forward, my tone even. “Um… I was tak

Alaric’s POVHazel had the longest, most luscious hair I’d ever seen. “I like it,” I mumbled before I even realized it.Her cheeks flushed lightly, and something inside me tightened. I leaned closer, drawn in. The urge to touch her and be near her was almost overwhelming. My mind was hazy, my thoug

Hazel's POVI froze, standing there like my feet had been rooted to the ground. The question caught me off guard, and for a few seconds, I couldn’t even form a single word.“You’re going to ask for gold, right?” Miss Penelope’s whisper came from behind me.I didn’t turn. Of course she would say tha

Hazel's POV“Get your stupid ass in there and go put on some makeup. The client should be here soon,” Miss Penelope snapped, yanking my arm.I froze, staring at her, my stomach twisting. I didn’t want to go in there. I didn’t want to smear colours on my face just so some random man could touch me.
