Elena POV

“You don’t have to worry about anything.” Draven said for the umpteenth time as we stood in his study a few days later.

Somehow, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that he was saying it for his benefit as much as for mine.

He kissed my forehead lightly before pulling back. “I’ve already talked with all the pack leaders and the council members, they will support you if anything happens. Besides, Lucas is here too. He’ll help you with whatever you need.”

I stole a glance at Noah who h

Lucas POVThe guard leading me to the pack leaders stoppped at the door, his hand resting on the handle.I raised an eyebrow. “Why aren’t you opening the door?”“Last year,” he began, half turned towards me. “You stopped me from being fired and even gave me a bonus out of your pocket. My mate was pregnant then but I was flat out broke, that bonus was the only reason why our pup could be born safely.”I sighed. “Look, it’s not a big deal, I don’t even remember it. You don’t have to thank me.”He drew in a deep breath and I was startled to see that his shoulders were trembling. “It may not be a big deal for you, but it is for me.” He pushed the door open and pulled me towards it. “Be careful in there.”I didn’t have a chance to ask what he meant before the door closed firmly behind me, but I didn’t need to. One, two, three, at least five pack leaders had omegas on their laps, every single one of them in various stages of being undressed. None of their mates were in the hall.I stepped

Elena POVThe nonchalant expression the deputy had been sporting since he’d revealed his identity finally slipped for a second and all I could see on his face was complete and utter terror. He clasped his hands together to stop them from trembling, but when he noticed me watching, the mask quickly slid back into place. He raised his head higher and tried to look unaffected. “You’re wasting your time.”“We’ll see.” Draven said.A long silence settled in the hall as we waited for the guards to return. But when they did, they were alone.“Where are they?” Draven’s gaze narrowed at them.“W-we searched his home and every place he’s known to frequent, Luna.” One of the guards said. “But we couldn’t find his mate or his pups. All the neighbors said they were in the pack up until yesterday, but no one’s seen them since then.”“Is that why you’ve been so cocky?” Draven asked. “Because you’ve hidden your family already?”“I told you.”The deputy said. “Just like you had to let Magnus go to pr

Elena POVFour hours passed by quickly. One minute I was sinking into soft sheets, and the next, Nellie was shaking me awake from sleep.Ten minutes later, I was in the council hall, staring blankly at the coroner. I breathed in deeply. “What did you just say?”“You were right Luna,” he said. “The body was someone related to you. At a 70% match, all data points to the body being a close relative of yours.”“Not that.” My hand tightened on my lap, clutching tightly until a dull pain radiates through it. “What you said after.”“Oh.” He said. “I took the liberty of testing the bones with your samples as well and the results were shocking.”“Shocking how?” Byron asked.“There was a 99.999 percent match.” He said. “It’s impossible for it to be this high, unless—““Unless it’s my mother.” I finished, my heart sinking from my chest to my stomach as I said the words. “The bones were my mother’s.”The hall fell silent. Council members exchanged glances with each other, unsure how to respond to

Elena POVI stumbled backwards, my stomach, twisting, and turning furiously in its bid to rid itself of every bit of food I’d eaten. But I forced down the bile rising up my throat.“I’m fine. I’m fine.” I said as the coroner handed me an evidence bag to vomit in. Looking at it made me feel even more ill so I looked away. How many people had died and then had their remains filed away in such bags?My thoughts must have shown on my face because a crease immediately appeared on his forehead. “It’s new.”Draven was at my side instantly, rubbing my back slowly “Are you okay?”“It’s her.” I stared at the coffin wide eyed, my voice little more than a whisper. “Sophia.”Sophia who’d not been my cousin, but also my best friend. Sophia who’d been the mastermind behind my downfall. Sophia who freely took the love my mother and I gave her and then gave us ashes in return. His hand stilled for a moment, then resumed rubbing again. “Sophia? From wind borne?” He moved closer to the coffin, then loo

Elena POVEven I turned to look at Draven. “Fake?”“Yes.” He nodded. “I switched it out a while ago because I was afraid something like this would happen.”“Then,” a council member asked carefully. “Where’s the real fragment now?”“Planning to go steal it?” Someone snorted from behind him.He turned to see who it was, his face flushed. “How dare you accuse me of treason, you hypocrite. Do you think anyone here has forgotten what your father did when Alpha first took over the throne? How he claimed Alpha wasn’t old or experienced enough to rule an entire region?”“That’s enough.” Draven said, silencing them before it could turn into a full on fight. “We still have a case to settle.”The two people kneeling on the floor glanced at each other, as if they were communicating with their expressions.Lucas cleared his throat and walked towards them, but Draven stopped him before he could get too close. “I’ll do it.”“Yes, Alpha.” He bowed and retreated back to his original position.“How lon

Elena POV‘Elena, Lucas doesn’t have a sister.’‘Elena, Lucas doesn’t have a sister.’ “Careful.” Draven said as he pulled me back slightly. In my daze, I’d been about to walk into a wall. His golden gaze held mine for a minute, then he blinked and resumed walking. “You said he told you he had a younger sister? Do you remember how the conversation happened?”I was already shaking my head slightly when a memory flashed through my mind. “It was back then, just after what happened to wind borne pack. I was upset so I went for a stroll and ended up in the gardens. Lucas found me there when he came to the gardens too and we ended up talking. When I wanted to leave, he insisted on walking me back to my rooms, saying he would want someone else to do the same for his younger sister if she ever needed it.”Draven listened quietly without saying anything for a while, but a chill slowly ran down my spine. If he truly didn’t have a sister, then this was one more thing Lucas had lied about.I dr
