Chapter 5

Author: Bright Lights
[Why haven't you come downstairs yet? I've been waiting for you for an hour. Did something happen?]

I snapped back to my senses.

Me: [Nothing. I'll be there in a minute.]

As I walked downstairs, I heard Rita softly comforting Julian inside one of the hospital rooms.

"Don't be scared. Everything's already been handled. Didn't you say you still haven't had enough fun? I'll travel with you for a few more days to help calm you down, okay?"

Julian sounded aggrieved.

"Do you think he'll willingly take the blame for me?"

Rita replied casually, "He and I have been married for seven years. Don't I know him by now? He's all talk. Ignore him. Before, he nearly died from overwork and ended up in emergency resuscitation, but I still skipped staying with him just to have dinner with you. In the end, after ignoring him for a few days, he came back and apologized to me anyway."

The corner of my mouth curled into a mocking smile.

She was so certain that I valued love too deeply, that I loved her too much, and that I couldn't bear to leave the hospital I had helped build from the ground up.

But my love was never meant to become a weapon she could use against me.

'Don't worry, Rita. I'm never coming back again.'

I headed to the underground parking garage and got into the Bentley that had been parked there for a long time.

Only after I had completed the onboarding procedures at my new hospital did Rita finally call me, screaming curses the moment I answered.

"Kevin, where the hell are you?! Are you insane? I already calmed the patient's family down! All that was left was for you to apologize, and you disappeared! I got yelled at because of you! Don't tell me you actually think the hospital can't function without you? Julian is a hundred times better than you. And you still want a promotion and raise? Are you even worthy?!"

She wanted to replace me with Julian, didn't she?

He had caused no one knew how many disasters like today's. They just hadn't exploded publicly yet. I was already sick of cleaning up his messes.

This ticking time bomb could stay with Rita. She could suffer the consequences herself.

Too lazy to listen to her ranting, I hung up directly.

Then I deliberately posted on my social media that I had transferred hospitals. Any patients needing treatment could now come find me at my new hospital.

Rita sent me only one sentence in response: [You're doing this on purpose just to disgust me, aren't you? Is this really necessary?]

Then she blocked me again.

I soon received another message. It was from the richest man in the city.

[Kevin, I only trust your medical skills. I'm transferring hospitals immediately.]

Not long ago, the tycoon had been diagnosed with a brainstem tumor. The entire hospital had been eager to make the surgery perfect and use it as a publicity opportunity.

Unexpectedly, he had firmly chosen me.

Naturally, I accepted without hesitation.

Three days later, at my new hospital, I completed the tycoon's brainstem tumor removal surgery in only four hours.

To build the hospital's reputation, and with the tycoon's consent, I voluntarily invited peers in the field to watch the surgery livestream.

Everyone was astonished by my surgical skill, and the event quickly went viral beyond medical circles.

Especially the tycoon's daughter—she even posted publicly online to thank me, saying she planned to invest two hundred million dollars into the hospital.

I was still considering how to reply to her when Rita suddenly removed me from her blacklist and sent me a screenshot.

[So you went this far just to win me over? Fine. I'll forgive you. I'm vacationing in Selanya with Julian right now. Buy a train ticket and come over. I'll travel with you for two days as your reward.]

I opened the screenshot.

It was the post made by the tycoon's daughter.

Rita had commented underneath it: [Kevin isn't even the best doctor at our hospital. Everyone is welcome to come seek treatment here!]

I was utterly speechless.

What nonsense was she commenting?

I immediately opened the post, intending to clarify things under Rita's comment.

But the comments had already exploded, and people who didn't know the truth were praising Rita's hospital for producing so many outstanding talents.

Then, the next second, another post shot straight onto the trending charts.

The user had a black cat profile picture and a username made up of random symbols. They deliberately posted screenshots and tagged Rita directly.

[Stealing my family's credit was one thing, but now you're trying to steal Dr. Kevin Miller from me too? Rita, have you no shame at all?]

I didn't expect it—Rita actually took the case. Not only did she take it, she even insisted that Julian perform the surgery as the lead surgeon.Someone like him, flashy but without substance… Forget leaving a scalpel inside a patient; I honestly couldn't imagine what else he was capable of doing in an operating room.At that point, I could only wish them the best of luck.I said, "Congratulations. Looks like we're all waiting for Julian's rise to greatness."With that, I opened the passenger door and got into the car.Faith quickly slid into the driver's seat, started the engine, and left the two of them choking on exhaust fumes.Inside the car, Faith glanced at me with obvious sarcasm."I wasn't even planning to deal with Rita yet, and she's already committing professional suicide. Aren't you going to stop her?"I narrowed my eyes slightly."You can't persuade someone who's determined to die."Faith chuckled softly."Fine. Don't be gloomy. Since you're divorced now, let's

The lawyer suddenly stopped me before I could leave."My apologies, Mr. Miller. There was an error in the share calculation. You had previously transferred all shares under your name to Rita. You currently only hold 0.5% equity, which means you're entitled to only one million dollars."I froze, staring at Rita in disbelief.A trace of guilt flashed through her eyes."The promotion document I asked you to sign back then was actually a share transfer agreement. Don't blame me! At the time, I needed enough shares to gain decision-making power in the hospital! I can compensate you with another half a million."Only then did I remember.Three years ago, she had unexpectedly offered me a promotion for the first time. But shortly after I signed the papers, she apologetically told me there was another promising talent and gave the promotion opportunity to him instead.I never imagined that long before Julian appeared, she had already been scheming against me.My marriage was truly lau

I found it amusing."Julian, what are you doing at my house?" I asked.Rita snatched the phone back and actually tried to explain."Don't misunderstand. Julian fell on the way back and got dirt all over himself. I just thought I'd bring him home to wash up before sending him back."She coughed lightly."Enough already. Stop making a scene. Just tell me the password. We're husband and wife, not enemies. Isn't there anything we can talk through properly?"She wanted to smooth things over. But I insisted on making things clear."Rita, do you understand that we're getting divorced? That is my house. I'm not letting you in. Don't force me to call the police."Her voice trembled, as though she were desperately suppressing her anger."Then where am I supposed to stay?!"I sneered."Julian's place seems pretty spacious. Your father also lives locally. Rita, with all your money, are you seriously telling me you can't find somewhere to stay?"Rita was furious."Kevin, you've really

On the other end of the line, all that remained was Rita's heavy breathing. She cursed viciously before hanging up.Hearing Rita completely lose her composure, Faith laughed heartily. She stuffed the phone back into my hands and asked, "Tomorrow's Saturday. Where do you want to eat? My treat."I blinked."But I already told you, I don't need weekends off. I only need—"She flicked my forehead before I could finish."Kevin, are you stupid? I was joking when I agreed to that back then. In your eyes, am I really some heartless capitalist?"You're my prized treasure. Not only would I make sure you rest properly and take care of yourself, but if I actually worked you to death, wouldn't that make me an idiot draining the pond to catch the fish?"The thing I value most is these hands of yours! Later, I'll arrange some additional training for you. We'll aim for the top expert position in oncology. Routine clinical work like this is far beneath your level."For some reason, my chest sud

"Mind if I take a look?" Faith asked. There was nothing to hide, so I handed Faith my phone.I had only skimmed the messages earlier, but they were probably just Rita demanding to know why I hung up on her and insisting that I go online immediately to help her attack Faith and humiliate her publicly.Faith let out a series of cold laughs as she tapped across the screen a few times before tossing the phone back into my arms.I glanced down and froze. Because Faith had replied on my behalf with two simple words: [Sure thing.]I hesitated before asking carefully, "What are you planning?"The next second, Faith wrapped an arm around my neck and forced me to bend down toward her camera. Then she pulled out her own phone and flashed a cheerful peace sign. She was a cold, stunning beauty to begin with, but now, smiling brightly like blooming flowers, she was so beautiful it was impossible to look away. After taking the photo, she immediately began typing on her phone.Confused, I ask

This user had an astonishing following of over a million fans. The moment they posted, hundreds of comments flooded in.[First! My Goddess, Faith, finally posted again!][What does she mean by stolen credit? Isn't Dr. Kevin the doctor that tycoon's daughter publicly thanked? Someone explain?][I remember Rita Owen—she's that somewhat famous pretty hospital director. But Faith Hayes is on a whole other level. Her cold, gorgeous look went totally viral back then!]Back then, Rita and Faith Hayes had both taken part in separate hospital-themed reality shows to build their reputations. The difference was that Rita invited social media influencers into the hospital to "experience daily life."Faith, however, only allowed cameramen to film from a distance. No one was permitted to interfere with treatment or disturb the doctors while they worked. In the end, Faith became wildly popular for her striking looks and no-nonsense attitude.Overnight, she gained millions of fans, and countle
