Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
Crystal hated my work.

To her, painting was nothing but an expensive hobby, nowhere near as important as her endless string of business dinners and client meetings.

Because she hated it, I'd given up my own career after we got together and turned myself into a stay-at-home husband whose whole job was taking care of her. Every corner of our apartment was filled with things she liked. The only space that belonged to me was this study.

My old professor called to talk about the trip abroad. He said he'd always regretted that I'd given up painting all those years ago. Out of our entire graduating class, I'd been the most talented, and the only one who'd walked away from it.

He rambled on for a while, but it all came down to the same point: he wanted me to think about my own future, not let myself get soft and trapped again in the grind of daily life.

"Collin, people change. Even if she seemed perfect to you back then, give it enough time and all that sacrifice, all that hurt you swallowed, fades away. All that's left in her memory is her own resentment, her own hardship."

His words on the other end of the line left me quiet. What he'd said wasn't exactly kind, but it was honest, and it landed exactly where it needed to.

Back in college, Crystal used to pester me constantly to paint her portrait, then show it off proudly to everyone, bragging about what a talented boyfriend she had.

Maybe that was just how her feelings worked: quick to catch fire, just as quick to burn out. Or maybe I was never the kind of person she could stick with all the way through.

"Collin, are you all right?"

His voice pulled me back.

I gave a bitter smile, even though he couldn't see it. "Yeah. I'm fine."

The silence stretched out for a while before my old professor sighed softly. "Don't think about it too much. Professor Gary Baker's studio is willing to give you this chance. Make the most of it this time."

"I will. I promise."

I knew exactly how hard-won this opportunity was, and I knew that if I let it slip through my fingers, I might never get another shot at my dream for the rest of my life.

For one brief moment, I actually felt lucky. Six years wasted, and I still had a chance to start over.

Just as I was setting up to sketch out my audition piece, the study door creaked open a crack. "Takeout isn't as good as what you make. My stomach really hurts. Will you cook for me?"

I shook my head. "I need to paint. I don't have time."

The word painting alone was enough to make Crystal's eyebrows knit together. She pushed the door open the rest of the way, glared at my easel with open disdain, and turned her head away.

"Collin, could you have some ambition for once? What's the point of fooling around with this stuff? If you're that unwilling to just sit at home, I can find you an easy job, something that won't get in the way of things around the house. You..."

"No, thank you."

That struck a nerve again. Crystal hurled the cup in her hand at me. The glass shattered across the floor. The noise seemed to snap some of her sense back into place.

"I know you're jealous. But playing hard to get like this is completely pointless."

"I'm not jealous." I picked up the broom and started sweeping up the glass while I said it.

Crystal stared at me for a long moment, then bit out a threat. "Think carefully. If you don't take the way out I'm giving you now, you'll regret it later."

"Sure." I set the broom back where it belonged and nodded. "I have things to do. Can you go?"

"Collin, you've really outdone yourself!"

The door slammed shut behind her, hard enough to rattle the frame, and my world finally settled back into a fragile kind of peace.

I recognized the ring immediately. It was the same style as the one I'd once picked out to propose to her with. She must have taken my old suggestion to heart and bought a matching pair."You have no idea. Ever since I found out you were leaving, I've felt sick with worry, like you were slipping away from me and there was nothing I could do about it. Collin, I've gotten so used to having you around. I honestly can't picture my life without you in it." As she spoke, she pushed the ring toward me with both hands, solemn as a vow. "I know I haven't treated you right. I promise I'll change. If it would put your mind at ease, I'll hand the company over to someone else and come with you. You spent all those years taking care of me. This time, let me take care of you while you chase your dream. What do you say?"Listening to her, my nose stung against my will. Not because I was moved. If anything, it was grief for all the years of my life I'd wasted on this. So this was how easily a p

On the way to run our paperwork, Crystal kept sneaking glances at me out of the corner of her eye. It made me uncomfortable enough that I just looked away."I'm planning to go pick up Luke once we're done shopping. I don't love the idea of him going to the hospital alone.""Yeah, that makes sense." I nodded absently, more focused on figuring out what I needed to bring to adjust to the food abroad.Crystal suddenly stopped walking and grabbed my hand. "Collin, why do you feel so... different lately?""Hm? Different how?"I looked at her, genuinely confused. She was quiet for a moment before she finally spoke. "You just don't get jealous anymore. You don't make scenes. It's like I don't even know you right now.""Isn't that exactly what you always wanted? I remember you used to accuse me of overreacting to everything."That left her with nothing to say. She frowned and walked a few steps ahead, then fell into step beside me, glancing at me again and again. I ignored it and kept

Crystal spending two nights away from home didn't stir up so much as a ripple in me. Even I found that hard to believe.Insecurity had always run deep in this relationship of ours, so much so that the moment Luke showed up, alarm bells went off in my head. Back then, wherever the two of them went, I'd find some way to dig up the details. Her friends all thought I was overreacting. Eventually, Crystal herself grew sick of my behavior, and more than once called me boring and obsessive.I leaned against the balcony railing, looking down. A couple was walking through the park below. The girl skipped ahead, glancing back at the guy every few steps. He walked behind her, both hands full of shopping bags, smiling at her the whole way. Crystal and I used to be like that too. How had we ended up here?My phone buzzed while I was still turning that thought over. I looked down. It was a message from Crystal.Crystal: [Had the meatloaf platter today. Not as good as the place we used to go

Something was clearly wrong with Crystal. I was still working out how to defuse the situation when she beat me to it."Why didn't you tell me? Is that what you've been doing in the study all these days, planning how to leave? Or is it about this damned painting?" She glared at the canvas in front of her, eyes full of scorn and fury. "You're giving up our wedding for some unrealistic, pie-in-the-sky dream? Don't be an idiot, Collin. You can't survive without me. I will not let this thing come between us."As she spoke, she grabbed the small knife off the table and moved toward my canvas. My mind went completely blank for a second. It felt like a seedling that had just broken through the soil getting hit by an endless downpour, and despair crashed over me all at once. All I could get out was one line. "Wait! It's not what you think!"I crossed the room and grabbed her hand. "That painting is a gift I'm making for you. It's just not finished yet."Hearing that, Crystal froze li

I looked down at my apron, streaked with paint, and shook my brush with a resigned little laugh.Forget it. We were never the same kind of people to begin with. Whatever pointless message she'd sent, I could just ignore it. Remembering the last time she'd bombarded my phone with messages, I worried she might start calling again if she didn't see me spiraling in response. Luckily, I didn't have many friends, and even fewer people I actually needed to keep in touch with, so I turned my phone off entirely and threw myself into my work.Time always moved fast when I was focused. When I finally heard the door slam outside, I looked up and realized it was already one in the morning.Crystal stumbled into the room, drunk, her heels dangling from one hand, reeking of alcohol. I couldn't help frowning. "Why didn't you answer my calls? Why didn't you call me back?" There was an edge of accusation in her voice.I turned my canvas aside, intending to walk her back out of the room. Instead,

  • On Our Anniversary, She Chose Him   Chapter 3

I canceled the wedding venue I'd booked months ago.I used to think that getting married right as our seven-year itch approached was something we both agreed on, a way to hold time off for a little longer under a new name. I never expected that before time could even come for us, our relationship would collapse entirely over a man named Luke Dillon. The friend handling our wedding dress design was an old classmate of ours from college, and he'd agreed to be a witness at the wedding for both of us. He looked at me with open concern, hesitating before he spoke. "If the wedding's off, what happens with you two after this?""There isn't going to be an after."I sighed as I said it, though underneath the sigh was something closer to relief. Six years of my life, and it turned out ending it only took about six seconds. My old classmate must have picked up on what I was feeling, because he reached out and patted my shoulder. I understood what he meant by it. I understood his advice too
